Do you think Half-Life 2 is kinda overrated?

A lot of people have been claiming Half-Life 2 as the one of the greatest FPS of all time if not the best FPS of all time and many people claim it asa groundbreaking/revolutionary game, while the idea of it beingone of the best ortheFPS of all time is subjective {I consider ONE of the best} but the game wasn't very revolutionary in the slightest especially compared to it's predessccor.

Half-Life was revolutionary for it's scripted first-person view storytelling, impeccable A.I., seamlessly implemented puzzles, and realistic immersion. Half-Life 2 was an excellent game for having a more in depth story with interesting characters told in a first-person perspective, cinematic set pieces, seamlessly implemented puzzles, realistic immersion, and added an amazing physics engime seamlessly implemented into it's puzzles and gameplay. The gravity was especially awesome where you can use your surrounding objects as projectile weapons to kill enemies.

However, Half-Life 2 wasn't revolutionary as physics based gameplay was already been before in Trespasser which practicly inspired Half-Life 2. Half-Life 2 did it well where Trespasser did it poorly. Not to mention the A.I. in Half-Life 2 is severly dissapointing as enemies are stupid where you can carry a barrel and they will not fire at you, your squad are worse as they're are ineffective in combat and always get in your way in the most annoying fashion. The gunplay wasn't particurly special either as the most of the weapons are standard, the ant-lion pheromone pod was one of the only few unique weapons.

Half-Life 2 is undoubtly an excellent game but don't you guys think it's a bit overpraised compared to the original Half-Life?

Yes, it is very overrated. (But maybe I'm upset because I can only run it near the lowest settings.) Something that really bugs me is that people praised it for having open environments but that really doesn't mean anything if everything only goes in a linear path. Yes, how awesome I can see areas far away that I will never get to explore. :| There was also a time that hermits argued that Half-Life 2 was twice as popular than Halo. It was very funny because it was obvious to everyone else it's not!

Then again: Half-Life 1 > Half-Life 2

The AI was a "slight" downgrade but I feel like everything in the game was alot better then the original Half-Life. And for a game that came out in 04 It was pretty amazing. Comparing it to todays games isn't that smart.

Yeah, in a way it was overrated. Really, it's essentially the first Half-Life game with a whole new engine and a gravity gun. I mean, it's incredibly refined, but I played the same game -- linear environments, heavily-scripted sequences, and bare minimum story campaign -- in the six year old predecessor. Even then, Half-Lifereached its critical acclaim through its near-revolutionary storytelling and amazing A.I, not the archaic gunplay that's been around since Doomlaunched. The sequel has the exact same method of storytelling (which still is some of the best around), but piss poor A.I. They didn't even bother to do anything with the gunplay save the grav gun.

Half-Life 2: Episode Two was proof that actually injecting some new-school design (i.e less linear levels) would do some good for the series.

I hope Half-Life 3 (I have no faith in Episode 3 running on Source) to be the most revolutionary blend in cinematic linearity and open world design that Crytek seems to do best. I really want Valve to make an effort to evolve Half-Life.

What makes HL 2 great is that it combined some new, fun technology with all the amazing puzzles and exploring from the original one, coupled with all the new gameplay mechanics added by the gravity gun and the new vehicles, all that put into a bigger and richer world made it one of the best FPS around. That and considering it still looks as good or better than some so called "next-gen" games, no I think it deserves all it's recognition.

While I agree that the combat and enemy AI isn't all that especial and it's kinda weak, I think the game did a nice job trying not to force you into more combat than exploring and keeping the two tied together, except for some instances like the last few parts of the game which felt dragged.

Though Half-Life 2 was the best FPS of 2004 (and for quite awhile after that), Halo 2did have better A.I. The only game that had better A.I around that time was F.E.A.Rwhich was released later.

For its time, Half-Life 2 was probably the best FPS around. You really can't compare it to today's standards because many games have been able to take the formula and style of games like Half-Life 2 and improve upon it over the years, so of course it won't seem as good now as it used to. I mean sure people can say they didn't like the game because every is entitled to their own opinion, but calling overrated is going a bit too far. I bet most of the people who call Half-Life 2 overrated are the same people who called Goldeneye overrated for the same reason.

I think it is. Don't get me wrong, It's an amazing game but some people here act like its the second coming of Christ. In fact everything made by Valve except for L4D is overrated. Whenever someone makes a multiplayer thread everyone throws out Team Fortress 2 and acts like there is no room for discussion. Personally I would rather play 100 different games over Team Fortress 2. Its not the end all be all multiplayer game. I would rather play KZ2 or Halo3 over TF2. Same applies with HL and HL2. Anytime someone talks about FPSes someone comes out and whips out HL and acts like the thread is over. There are far better FPSes in my opinion. Games like Crysis completely obliterate Half-Life, why? Because they are more fun. And yes, I would rather take KZ2 and Halo3 over HL2 anyday of the weak. Go on, flame me! Im ready :x

Well, if we take in polish and presentation, Half-Life 2was probably the best FPS around. But if that's the case, standards had hardly changed for the past six years since Half Life's original debut.

I guess I'm trying to say that being a FPS, Half-Lifehas always had really dull gunplay. Halonailed it, Far Crynailed it, and F.E.A.R nailed it. Sometimes I feel Half-Life 2was more of a Source engine showcase because it really lacked in the pure gunplay aspect.

Well to be fair, most of those games you listed focused on the gunplay over all other aspects. Half-Life 2 shined so much because of the mix of story-telling, gameplay, graphics, and overall presentation that it had. It achieved so much for the time it was released. However, I do see how the gunplay could turn some people off when compared to the likes of Far Cry and Halo.

I'd say yes, you're overrating it, to the people saying "ZOMG BEST FPS EVARRRR VALVE = TEH GOD!" (of which there are many)... But to the people considering it just an excellent FPS, and possibly the best one of the past five years? I'd say no, they're not overrating it, since I think that's perfectly reasonable based on the quality of the game. It was damned good. Not perfect - still felt a bit stiff and antiseptic (normal for the HL series) and was a bit old fashioned in base gameplay mechanics (very slightly to its detriment, I felt), but the progression of the game was really great, and it came together to be a lot of fun. Probalby the most complete FPS since the original Halo, in my eyes.

HL2 is a kick arse game - and this coming from someone who found HL1 boring as hell and had trouble finishing it. Episode one was a bit below the bar, Episode two was quite good. Overall, one of the better FPS showings of the past five years, easily. Arguably the best, but, I'll leave that for someone else to argue, since PC fanatics line up to argue the point.

More over-rated than halo

Terrible AI

Boring Gunplay

Lame choice of weapons

mind numbingly bad vehicle sections

graphics that had already been bested by far cry.

The only thing it has in its favor is one interesting character alex, other than that nothing stands out.

I would say the physics system was well done if they had not put it to such shoddy use.

Its a great game, and I will play ep. 3 at some point, but I would say it is a bit overrated. But not by much.

And team fortress 2 is awsome, if you don't like that game, I don't know what online game your playing.

Of course Half-Life 2 is overrated. It still perplexes me as to how anyone could play through Bridge Point and say that they had just played a great game. Not only is Half-Life 2 not TEH GRATEST GAEM EVAR!!11!, it is horrible, and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
