End of gen sales results (sorry cows)

The next generation of gaming has officially kicked off with the release of the Wii U. With the 7th gen consoles now becoming known as "last gen" we can tally up the numbers and proclaim a "winner". So who won?

1st place: Nintendo Wii ~97.18 million units (as of september)

2nd place: Microsoft Xbox 360 ~70 million units (as of october)

3rd place: Sony Playstation 3 ~70 million units (as of november) (shipped, not sold to consumers)

It was a good game, and I don't think anyone saw this coming at the end of the 6th generation.

Congrats to Nintendo, for generating new marketshare

Congrats to Microsoft, for making Sony your *****

Congrats to Sony, for averting total destruction of the PS3

Official numbers peg 70 million for both 360/PS3. Whilst reasonable to assume MS shipped 360s within that 6-week (odd) period, there are no numbers, thus no evidence.

Officially, the 360 has sold 70 mill. We all know, that in reality, it's more than that, but there's technically no proof.

BTW all companies release shipped numbers in their official quarterly results, which is what we use.

They are within 300k. Who cares at this point. They are the same, considering the 360 had a year head start.

In 5yrs time we wont say PS3 & 360 sold X amounts till WiiU release, we'll just say PS3 & 360 sold x amount (counting all units including the ones sold even when PS4/Next Xbox were available)..

OK, how would you determine when a gen ends? When the last console from this gen is discontinued even though that'll be well into the next gen?

As in like, 3 or 4 years? And the PS2 is still in production, so....

Why the hell does everybody just look at sales numbers around here?

The xbox 360 outperformed the PS3 in

Hardware sales (70 million as of September)
Software Sales (not debatable)
Multiplat quality (with a few exceptions)
$$ the console made (not debatable)

The PS3 isn't even on the same level as the 360 when you take into account these things. You cant just look at sales numbers and declare a winner, especially when you look at how bad Sony has been doing the past year and how much money the 360 has been raking in for Microsoft.

The Xbox 360 is a far far more successful console. This is NOT debatable. Microsoft has made far more money off the xbox 360, and this is a fact. Should we not declare the winner based on facts? Exclusives and better games are purely subject to opinion. Even if the PS3 managed to sell more (which it still is trailing) it doesn't matter. When people look back at this generation they will see where the $$ went, which is why the 360 will be #2 regardless of overall hardware sales because you have to take into account everything else.

In terms of when the official start of the next console generation starts, I believe it has always been once the 1st next gen console comes out. That's how it's been on SWs but I think a mod should come in and clarify this.

There is no real definition for the "end of a gen." Everybody has a different view on when it ends.

what i meant was in 5yrs time we wont say PS3/360 sold 70million... if by 2018 PS3 would have sold 80million, thats the number we shall mention in discussions...

However if lemmings want so bad 2nd place, they can keep it... I think Ps3 fans should worry much about sales, but focus on the many great exclusives coming out in 2013..
