Final Fantasy brand greatly damaged, says Square CEO

Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada says the poorly received Final Fantasy XIV has done a lot of damage to the famous series' reputation.

"The Final Fantasy brand has been greatly damaged [by XIV]," the executive said at a Tokyo press conference today, according to a Sponichi report (via Andriasang).

Back in May, Square Enix published a lengthy list of planned updates to improve the game following its bug-riddled launch last September.

Wada said today on the subject: "We'll continue with our reform work, which basically amounts to fully redoing the game, and hope to revive the FFXIV that should have been released."

The Final Fantasy series hit 100 million unit sales worldwide earlier this year.

FFXIV did about as much damage to the final fantasy brand as Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith did to the Star Wars Brand

Yeah, it was bad, but no one cared because the damage had already been done by Attack of the Clones (FFXIII) and Phantom Menace just a few years prior (FFXII)

Meh, they should just do another FF like VII was and all will be fine.

XIV didn't do the franchise any favors, but only a small niche of FF fans ever intended to try it out anyhow. Just like XI.

Of course it has. They've completely an utterly tarnished the FF name and it's not just because of FFXIV.

People hate on FF so much for no reason, thing is its still a great series, its just not exactly like how it used to be and all you nostalgic FF7 fans pretty much pre hate any newer one that comes out. I loved FF3/6/7/8 and all those but I also loved FFXI and FFXIII, its just different.

That being said FFXIV from what ive seen, is so horrible, I hope it nearly ruins Square and teaches them a good lesson. There is no way that game should of been even considered for release the way it was. I have no idea what they were thinking becasue they basically took the worst parts of FFXI that everyone hated and exaggerated them. The only upside is the graphics but who really cares because with graphics like that i doubt the game will be enjoyable when you go into a crowded city adn it takes 5 minutes to load it. Heck when I played FFXI the main marketplaces diddnt load for a good 2 minutes.

As if it was soooooo amazing once. Maybe 20 years ago the series was great and impressive. We're almost in 2012, not in the late 80's. FF should go to sleep for the next 5 years and come back with something new and not another spiky hair anime RPG...silversix_

Yeah it kinda did lol. I've enjoyed every Final Fantasy in the main series (except for 8 and 11 which I haven't played) so I won't let one game deter the quality of the series as a whole.

Western developers are just as bad as their eastern counterparts unlike popular system wars myth would lead us to believe.

From what I can tell XIII did more damage. Alot of Final Fantasy fans seem to ignore the online multiplayer only ones and even fewers of the fans would buy a PC on Final Fantasy. The ones my damaged by XIV would be Square since they invested so much in it.

Expectations. Most people ignored FFIV (like FFXI), because it was a MMO. The hype for FFXIII was inmense, and the game is widely considered a huge let down.

I hope they didn't realize this just now. FF really did die after 10. Although XII was an amazing game imo, many fans disliked it. Then came XIII and XIV, which were hated to no end. Now they're releasing more MMOs for fans to hate and crappy spin-offs like Theaterythm too.Oil_rope_bombs

You just described majority of JRPGs. Its all about if you like the combat system. Look at person 3 its just dungion crawling where you press x constally. However what persona you use makes a difference and thats how you plan things out. Same with 13 you have to pic the right strategy. Yea auto battle is there but its optional and doesint always pick the best choice.

Its like me ordering a prodcut from a store if what I orderd comes in and I dont like how it works or looks in person then I wouldint say it damages the company I just dont like it. Now if the product comes broken im a bunch of pieces the store I ordered from gets a negative look from me and thus damages the image.finalfantasy94

The whole topic is about opinions, therefore, saying that "opinions doesn't matter" (when talking about opinions) makes very little sense.

No one really cares about FF MMOs.

A lot of people are going to say FFXIII, but FFXII saw the same level of backlash when it was released. I think it's fairly reasonable to accept that every mainline Final Fantasy will receive this treatment from now on.

It does matter a lot if they hated it or not, since that's what we're talking about, people's perception about the franchise.

people will always complain and hate. Doesint even matter how high it scores. A broken messy game should hurt the series then a game that some like and some dont. It doesint make any sense. It doesint make any sense to say this series is damaged just cause you dont likke the cast or characters or story or battle system since FF is known for doing something different each time. Sometimes the FF fanbase makes no sense what so ever. The funny thing is im a FF fan but I accept that. I know I will not like some of the games since I know its different each time. Going from part to part.
