Well, who would have guessed that releasing the worst MMORPG ever after a bad RPG might cause bad rep? This is the time to create something for the fans like an enhanced port of FF7 or KH3 xD

[QUOTE="hakanakumono"][QUOTE="ultraking"]I'm pretty sure it was ff13 that damaged the franchise.. who doesn't love to run thru narrow corridors , and mash the x button for 25 hours? ultraking
FF fans have been mashing the X button happily since 1994.
not true. I could literally close my eyes and win a boss fight in 13.. I wouldn't even try that in any other ffI don't really think you could do that for any FF except FFXII, where you could set up gambits to do so. But FFXIII? Despite all of the "mash x" nonsense the game gets, I found it to be the most involved battle system to date. When I first played the game, my first thought was that the "x mashing" problem had been significantly alleviated since previous titles.
It has no basis, because the game is specifically designed to require paradigm shifts to be played effectively.
A lot of people are going to say FFXIII, but FFXII saw the same level of backlash when it was released. I think it's fairly reasonable to accept that every mainline Final Fantasy will receive this treatment from now on.
hakanakumono
Yea I noticed this to. I remember TONS of hate for ff12 but once 13 came 12 hate went to 13.
people will always complain and hate. Doesint even matter how high it scores. A broken messy game should hurt the series then a game that some like and some dont. It doesint make any sense. It doesint make any sense to say this series is damaged just cause you dont likke the cast or characters or story or battle system since FF is known for doing something different each time. Sometimes the FF fanbase makes no sense what so ever. The funny thing is im a FF fan but I accept that. I know I will not like some of the games since I know its different each time. Going from part to part.finalfantasy94
FFXIII was a huge let down.
FFIV was widely ignored.
Huge letdowns make more damage that things that are ignored, regardless of how broken they are (because they are ignored).
"Oh look western Developers are pushing the genre forward in amazing ways, I know what we will do, we will make the graphics look more pretty and keep the same turn based RPG mechanics from 1989 intact and hope that does well" This is how you spell FAILURE.Skreltch
Yeah I don't think anyone here believes you actually play Final Fantasy games if you think its the same turn based RPG mechanics lol.
[QUOTE="WilliamRLBaker"]I agree, Final Fantasy VI was my favorite and always remained the best in my eyes, I could NOT stand 7 or any after it. They should just.. Stop making them altogether, it's become a major sell-out, obviously why the series is hurting. it's not even original anymore.Eh the Final fantasy Brand has been dead since 7.
aryoshi
They should stop making them????
What about the people buying the games and enjoying them? Because you don't like it others aren't allowed to either?

Uh, that's not even close to what I said :P I said they should stop making them, not stop selling them. profit.
Final Fantasy XIII sold millions of copies and made plenty of money for Square Enix whereas Final Fantasy XIV didn't. As far as CEOs and stockholders are concerned that is where the true damage has been done to the brand name.

Having a game known world wide to be a factual broken mess of a game is more damaging then a game that some people like or dont like.

Profits and brand name are two different things, and aren't necessarily related. That's not an argument.

You already said that. And I already said what I had to.If we're going in circles, I see little point in continuing this conversation.

Maybe from a gamer's perspective it's different but this thread has to do with the business side of Square Enix. Final Fantasy XIV significantly brought down stock numbers for them and was costing them money, hence the statement. Do you really think the CEOs care what people are saying on forums considering how much money XIII generated? If XIV had been profitable Square would never have had said anything.

And that's exactly what this thread is about. This thread is about the "franchise's reputation" (exact words of the article).

Not everyone liked every Final Fantasy after 10.
I agree, you just have to remember that the dude with 2 middle initials hates giving Playstation games any credit, no matter how awesome they are8)
Well thats what happens when you remake most your old versions, throw us mindless spinoffs, an MMO that didnt work at launch, a severely nerfed FFXIII and then the horrible dev cycle of Versus.
Sure as hell its been greatly damaged as your mismanaging it worse than the tories and the uk's armed forces.

well how about this, regardless of what any one persons opinion is(those who say that XIII was a HUGE letdown), on AVERAGE it got reviews around 8.5 by critics and fans, XIV got reviews around the 4.0 range:cry:
Whether you judge these games critically or financially, XIV did far more damage in BOTH categories than XIII ever did.

Please do tell me how I've said the ps1 was this horrible mess, or the ps2 for that matter...Please come at me bro...show me where I haven't in every single thread that has ever come up why was the ps2 so popular? have replied...Because it had the games or it had amazing games the same for the ps1.
Maybe you need check Current fanboyism has absolutely nothing to do with the past where the ps1 was my system of choice...But oh no it couldn't be that I hate final fantasy 7,8.9,10, 12 and 13. Couldn't possiblybe that I loved final fantasy tactics, parasite eve, xenogears disc 1,bushido blade, bushido blade 2, brave fencer musashi, einhander, and vagrant story all square soft games all on the ps1...
P.S: I didn't go out a short bit back and get arc the lad collection to play it nope not at all...
From what I've seen, more damage was done by FFXIII than FFIV.IronBassAgreed,i don't think many fans of the series have even played FFXIV as it's not exactly your typical final fantasy game,i think Final fantasy xi and xiv should of been called FF online / Final fantasy online 2 not a major number idk
FFXIV did about as much damage to the final fantasy brand as Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith did to the Star Wars Brand
Yeah, it was bad, but no one cared because the damage had already been done by Attack of the Clones (FFXIII) and Phantom Menace just a few years prior (FFXII)

SAGE_OF_FIRE
Couldn't have agreed more.
I've never been a fan of the FF franchise, but at least in the past, I recognized it as a highly respectable series that millions of fans loved, even though I never liked or played it. It was simply big and important for many gamers.
Now, though, it's just trash and SE should be looking at something else to make.

Yea this is very true. People can debate forever if FF13 is good or bad end of the day theres not factual evidence that it damaged the image or buisness side and before someone says "well some dont like it" while that may be true that doesint equel fact that its damaged its image. FF14 actually damaged the company in both image and buisness side of things since its factually a broken game.
This.FF should go back to the style before FF XIII... More open gameplay
Khoo1992
I was hoping FFXIII would build upon what XII did and have it a more open and expansive world but if you look at the credits for XIII, many of the leads were the same leads from the FFX team. So instead of pushing forward with the series like XII did, they just decided to take a couple of steps back to the extreme linearity of X.

That was his point. FF14 was bad (like Episode 3), but the franchise's reputation had already been damaged by the previous games.

There are a few posters here on SW that I can name of the top of my head that constantly complain about the linearity of today's modern games and bash XIII to hell and back yet when FF comes up, they're like "Yeah, FFX is like, the best FF ever."

FFX was the beginning of the end for me. I hated the game from the beginning. Sure it was gorgeous, but it lacked in gameplay. Take me back to FF 7 or 9. Those were great RPG's.
