FPSs are starting to feel the same. The genre needs to evolve.

The multiplayer maps in first person shooters just suck now, they are boring/simplistic they might look cool but they just play crappy.

I played quake 2 main gate map for deathmatch from 1997-2001 and never got bored because the design was great, another great map is hollywood holocaust for duke nukem 3d.

hahayoukidding
"the edge" in quake 2 ftw. for that matter, quake 2 for the massive win.

I completely agree. I was enjoying 360 at fist but eventually playing shooter after shooter just got to me. On their own each game is good, but when you play one after the other the whole genre starts to stink. This is why I'm enjoying the Wii so much right now - because it has games that you could never dream of on 360. The genre really needs a boost. My love for shooters has almost been killed this gen. The games aren't bad but I just couldn't care less about them anymore.

For those of you who are bored of the FPS genre, maybe you guys should try Zeno Clash when its released...

Its an action/fighting game with FPS elements (with spears/arrows as weapons NOT guns)

As time passes, there will be fewer new ideas left for developers. There's only so much you can do in a FPS and I don't really blame devs for sticking with tried-and-tested formulae. Think of those WWII shooters. Apart from MOH: Airborne which let you parachute into the battle, all the other games are pretty much the same. The only thing that draws people to it (myself at least) are the new stories. But they're going to run out of WWII battles to make games of eventually and then what? Who knows...

u should try crysis if u have a nice computer. i do know what ur talking about. i think halo is one of those games u play and wounder why i'm playing this game. there are a lot of FPS games out there.

i think crysis is a great new type of FPS. i played it is fun game. it is open ended world so u can wounder around, there are suit abilities, like more armor, sprint fast, turn invisible, super strength. instead of just shooting at a person u can run up and choke the person then through him. modd a gun when u unlock new weapon abilites, like a dot site, flash light, scope.

Most devs go to where the money is. Hence the reason why you have so many Wii showelware titles, because they make money.

Yeah, never been a huge fan of FPS games since the majority have always been like that to me, this is nothing new but I disagree, FPS have even more variety nowadays, sure the straightforward shoot-run-shoot-cover ones are still predominant but there are many out there who aren't like that and many of those can still be fun since L4D taught me that adding a few new elements and a nice premise can still make the run and shoot gameplay feel fresh.

I agree wit hthe last part though, I definitely want to see more puzzle solving/exploring on FPS.

If only Crysis wasn't a dull no-innovation game. Other than it's openness, it's not too far from those generic shooters TC is talking about.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl was one of the most unique and best shooters I've ever played. I think people need to stop looking towards games like Gears and Halo for innovation... all they concentrate on is bringing out the next iteration that rehashes the same gameplay for the nth time.

At this point I'm just tired of FPS's for the most part. They're overhyped and have very similar muiltiplayer. I wish devs could focus on better narratives instead of the typical WWII or Alien invasion borefest. I hope Timesplitters 4 and/or Red Steel 2 pull through with something different.

I agree but those ones get the most attention so alot of people just ignore the good ones and then the FPS genre will be like how the Fighting Genre was in 1992, the Platformer genre was between 1985- 2000. You can still find those games but not as many as their used to be when they were the "it" genre.

We have a plethora of multiplayer based games, we don't need any more really. lol

I dunno im a big time pc gamer but I still haven't played the first crysis (i.e. actually sit down at home and play it). I could easily barrow a copy from work and even crysis warhead but meh don't feel like it. I got a q6600, 4gb ram, ati 4870 1gb, etc.. so its not like I couldn't run the game either. I've messed around with it a bit at work but like its pretty meh at least imo. Graphically though it stomps everything.

Actually, this guy has a point. All of the shooters that weren't standard and run of the mill, i.e; Crysis, Stalker, Cryostasis etc. are all made by companies over in the UK, or Germany or Europe. Except for Valve, because HL2 was pretty amazing.

I agree.I've got a similar rig to yours and can play Crysis:WH with a lot of the eye candy. As a technical achievement its unsurpassed,I mean its stunning. But as far as the actaul gamplay is concerned it really isn't anything special imo.

How come no one has really mentioned Left 4 Dead? That game showed us why we (most of us that is) love the FPS genre. While it didn't bring lots of new stuff to the table, it took all the rubbish stuff like crazy non-gameplay-related effects, horrible stories and useless open-worldness and cut it all down to the true core of the FPS genre: adrenaline-filled action and your fight to survive (with friends!).

That's why Left 4 Dead was one of the best games of 2008.

it took you all this time to realize that?....and no they arn't going anywhere just like nintendo isn't ...its because people are so mindless that that is all they play and they don't care...they don't buy any games with depth they just are fps whores....and people who buy nintendo keep buying the wii because of the either brawl....Which is fun or mainly because of the motion sensor gimmick....then they never play it again

I just checked some Cryostasis vids. and it looks really interesting, the setting reminds you of Bio. but it looks way creepier.

Inserting shallow first person RPG elements into a shooter creating an almost "multi-genre" game is hardly a step in the direction of being evolutionary. To evolve as far as gameplay would be to insert some of the elements from Mirror's Edge, perhaps? Improving some basic techniques to have the player character feel less "robotic".

There are newer games that do make good use of the FP pesrspective. Mirror's Edge, Half Life 2, Stalker, Crysis, Bioshock, The Darkness etc., but they are usually overshadowed by games like Killzone 2 and Halo 3, which could quite easily be TPSs, and it wouldn't make a diffrence. Not evey game has to be diffrent, but when the same concept is used 15 times every year, you have a problem. It's allways Space Marines and aliens or modern combat games (Including WW2 games here.), and it's allways about some epic conflict. If you are going to use the FP perspective, then you have to use it in a way that enchances the experience. It should make the player feel as if he's part of the events, to completely immerse the player in the game (What is it with cutscenes in FPS? Is that really nessecary?). Not to have him/her simply manipulate an avatar and force themselves through the game simply to see how it all unfolds. The biggest problem though is that almost every idea used in an FPS has been used 50 or so times more. It's ridiculous at this point. After playing the KZ2 demo it became obvious they were not trying to innovate. I had allready played the game before I even played the demo, it was as if I knew exactly what was going to happen, and how the level would play out. It is obvious there is huge potential for new original FPS games, but no one seems to be intrested in exploiting it. Ok, fair enough, the money is in the traditional FPS games like Killzone 2, and to be honest that's fine. But what about the other 6 or so games that will be released this year trying to mimic that? Will they really succed in terms of sales? Would they not be better off trying something new and instead focus on another group of people who may not be quite so intrested in the traditional FPS games?

We all know this...but what can they do? Invest more on the AI? Make a game about a four-armed freak running around with guns so you won't have to switch over to different weapons all the time? You know...be able to shoot all four at once?

[QUOTE="world69star69"]I take it you haven't played the killzone 2 demo yet? Baseless assumptions on a game never played? Play it! It renders all other shooters obsolete! Meh. These things have been improving for the past 10 years. What we need are some advanced mechanics like jumping and other functions as far as mobility that gives the player a less robotic feeling and more of impression impression that there is a body attatched to the gun.

so better animations? That goes along with physics in a way.

Physics based animations are the future. Physics based everything is the future.

The quake franchise was actually dumbed down for newbies.

Quake 1/2 the online deathmatch maps were the single player, with quake 3 arena they made maps only for online play and the maps ended up being too simplistic and boring and made for noobs so they dont get stuck on stuff.

hahayoukidding
I was mainly talking about singleplayer in this case, multiplayer seems to be a little more creative gameplay-wise, even if most multiplayer maps are becoming way too simplistic.

Not better animations, better mechanics. An FPS has yet to implement a solid jumping feature. To actually feel as if you're leaping instead of floating across a short gap. Maybe actually feel as if you're crouching instead of simply bringing the view closer to the ground. Find a way to make bodily motions more noticeable, and not as subtle and shallow as a viewpoint change. The body extends past the arms, yet very few developers have done a whole lot with this concept.

What about Mirror's Edge? tho it's not my type of game.

Anyway, I would like to see more shooters like Rainbow Six and Unreal Tournament 2004 with platforming element to add more depth to the game.

Although its probably hard to evolve the FPS genre, I just wish future FPS follow the formula which makes the genre so fun, and that's to have coop play online and offline and have splitscreen.

I've heard already that KZ 2 evolves the genre. What new mechanics or design concepts can we expect from it?

1st person cover system on consoles that's all I can think of but I pretty sure you can come up with your own conclusion from varies videos shown out there.

If you think shooters are feeling the same, you need to stop playing mainstream shooters. If you want original and GOOD shooters, look no further than STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl (or maybe STALKER Clear Sky, but I personally think that it sucks.)HenriH-42
Stalker was good for a while (haven't played clear sky), but there was too much management of bandages (you had to use them all the time) and it was a pain to keep your inventory light enough so you could run long enough to make it worth it. Speaking of running, your character becomes exhausted too easy, so you have to toggle between walk and run a lot, and it takes forever to walk anywhere in the game. The open-ended gameplay is can be cool but that means there is a lot of walking without any action. The game needs vehicles, or a transport system. The game had a nice atmosphere but no variety outside of the rpg-like inventory system, which was more of a chore than an exciting excursion. The shooting was mostly standard (the realistic recoil was easy to adjust to).

And that'll change the genre forever  For something to be an evolutionary step, it has to be something that will most likely be implemented not only in one particular title, but to most games in the genre. We've already seen cover systems in the FPS genre. Changing the perspective isn't going to be a huge step for the genre. 2-weapon system, designated grenade button, dual stick controls, and regenerating health are some of the more recent additions to the genre.

I played it too and that's a load of BS. KZ2 is a very very very good super super super traditional unorignal do-nothing-new shooter.

First person cover system proves you wrong.

You mean the first-person "cover" system the majority of PC shooters have had since the late 90's (peaking+crouching)?

KZ2 FPSC is different from the ones of the PC.

[QUOTE="iam2green"]u should try crysis if u have a nice computer. i do know what ur talking about. i think halo is one of those games u play and wounder why i'm playing this game. there are a lot of FPS games out there.

i think crysis is a great new type of FPS. i played it is fun game. it is open ended world so u can wounder around, there are suit abilities, like more armor, sprint fast, turn invisible, super strength. instead of just shooting at a person u can run up and choke the person then through him. modd a gun when u unlock new weapon abilites, like a dot site, flash light, scope. Dystopian-X

If only Crysis wasn't a dull no-innovation game. Other than it's openness, it's not too far from those generic shooters TC is talking about.

L4D is one of the main offenders and is contributing to the rut that the FPS industry is in. You just shoot zombies until your face is blue. Yes you have to use teamwork and it may be implemented really well, but it's not anything we haven't seen before.
