[QUOTE="TheEroica"] GS desire to sometimes go with the "sexy" underdog pick, a la Dark Souls.Cherokee_Jack
I think that was just a one time thing, most of the other GameSpot GOTY winners were mainstream titles.
The current staff leans toward long, story-heavy single-player games and RPGs.
2008: MGS 4
2009: Demon's Souls
2010: Red Dead
2011: Skyrim
2012: Halo 4? Doesn't fit. Assassin's Creed III? Not if the ending and technical issues are as bad as people are saying.
Looks like it's either Dishonored, or one of the many quality digital releases this year if they really want to shake things up.
One of the other things I noticed is the direction towards multiplatform releases.
2006- Gears of War (exclusive, at the time at least)
2007- Super Mario Galaxy
2008- MGS4
2009- Demon's Souls
From 2010 on it's been multiplatform games that have dominated the nominees and taken the winnings. I don't know if that has anything at all to do with the quality of exclusives or simply a preference by GS to provide games everyone (or a large part of the community) will enjoy. But I also find that aspect interesting.
I also don't see a shooter winning game of the year unless it does something genuinely unique. There are so many excellent shooters on the market that it's hard to say whether Halo 4 can be anything more than a great shooter. A great shooter can win GotY, it did in 2006, but I think GotY also examines the overall impact a game can have on the industry at large. Each of GS's winners are all considered excellent by a large majority of people after the awards.
Gears of War reinvigorated the TPS, Galaxy reinvigorated the platformer, MGS4 brought on a technical mastery that wasn't seen at the time, Demon's Souls came as a brutal surprise, Red Dead Redemption is the first universally beloved Western and so on. Each game is still talked about to this day. I don't know if Halo 4 is going to have legs like that. I feel like Halo 3 did the most for the series this gen based on what it introduced, and I don't see Halo 4 as winning. Definitely a nominee. But I don't think it will win.
