I started it last night and played for about an hour. I have to admit, the physics interaction is entertaining enough that I'm finding it fun just to screw around.

Actually having to aim makes you feel like a Polygon employee.
I accidently opened the gate and 3 escaped and started chasing me..
First the dude shows up and posts a gif of a girl, trying to make it seem like she's dissing VR, when he doesn't even realize that the girl freakin' works in VR, and she is simply having some fun. Then he crawls back into the thread once Alyx gets rave reviews, claiming the GS review isn't good enough.

Dude, I've owned multiple Oculus headsets, lol. I'm down to one (Go), and am in the process of upgrading to another (Rift S) just to play this game. The problem is the Rift S is sold out freaking everywhere. It'll come back in stock, though. At any rate, the devs have already implied a PSVR version for Alyx, but for me personally it won't matter, because by the time it comes out I'll have already played the game on an Oculus. At this point I've invested more in Oculus than PSVR. Which should probably tell you something.
In the meantime, feel free to keep falling for bait dropped by VR enthusiasts by posting gifs of them without realizing you're trying to drag down VR by sharing images of avid VR supporters. Epic poetic justice, right there. That girl got you good, dude. ;)
Even though Alyx shotgun is one handed it has far more impact and weight compared to 1/2, especially 2 where it felt like you were squirting a pea-shooter.
The heavy combine seems to work very much like the Hunter in Episode 2 where it pretty much a bull charging at the player (through at a far slower pace) instantly becoming the priority.
Strong "Fear" vibes from it, which is a good thing.
@ghosts4ever: Good news for you my friend.
good if it mean future Half life games will be regular.
beside of modded, can they made it faster paced? can they remove invisible arms? can they remove teleporting?
thats the thing. otherwise this is not Half life.

The combat is faster paced, more varied and far more engaging than than Halflife 2. It's very clear they looked at what people complained about (it's weak/average combat) and made an effort to improve upon it.
It's considerably more difficult as well, at least on hard, which is more comparable to OG Halflife.
The combat in general be it Xen creatures of combine is fantastic. Not going to be bunnyhopping all over the shit with glory kills like DOOM, but it's definitely visceral in a grounded way. Very much captures the intensity from 1 which 2 lacked outside of ground-to-air battles.

LOL even with glory kill. Doom require far more challange than Half life ever did. you die in Doom faster than Half life.
Out of curiosity for you who own the game - it's actually good?
Honestly like most VR games watching on screen doesn't and will not represent what the game is like to play.
A lot of people see footage of VR games and think its clunky and slow... What they don't understand is the reason for that is that a conventional game does everything for you with a touch of a button and will look smooth in doing so and quick, in VR you have to turn your head and use hand/arms to reload a gun or pick something up.
So it being clunking looking is just a representation of human interactions we as nerds who have never fired guns or probably ever done anything remotely close to what these games ask us to do when it comes to co-ordination of your body its just normal for it to look slow and clunk because we are the bottleneck not the game.
Why am I saying this?... well its to answer your question, when someone see's footage of the game they see a slow paced clunky game play but what YOU the player are seeing and experiencing is a moment of intensity trying to reload the gun before the head crab gets any closer where you are fully immersed in the environment and that moment in time which is just a 5-10 second thing and in a standard game its just a reload... So you see VR takes simple things that people do in shooters and turns them into a better representation of what it would actually be like. You are not Gordan Freeman or the Doom guy if all you are doing is sitting on a chair and pressing a mouse button to shoot someone and then reloading 1/2 second later with a simple push of the button while double jumping in mid air. Its what these VR haters keep holding on two as if they can't comprehend that you are doing these things in VR which is why it will always look slow and level of intensity involved and satisfation of shooting ONE person in VR after a reload you nail beats any feeling I have ever had in a FPS in my entire life.
VR has reinvigorated my love for gaming and HLA is by far one of the best VR experiences I have had, the game is sublime and if you are interested in a shooter and like atmosphere this easily beats any game you can play on a 2D screen.
I can only imagine what a Metro game or Bioshock game or even a Dishonoured game would be like if made for VR.
I'll ask again: is smooth turning available yet?
Nope, its still snap turn.
I think its because smooth turning is what invokes motion sickness most in people, hopefully they patch it in as I don't suffer from it.
@Grey_Eyed_Elf: If smooth turning isn't available at launch in a VR game it's a no-go for me. I'm sure Valve will add it, but it's still hugely annoying that fundamental features like this are still being left out at launch for VR games. Devs need to understand that not all of us have weak guts. I mean, at least give us the freaking option to turn on smooth turning. It makes no sense to leave it out until a patch. It's like they're afraid somebody's going to puke without realizing they can simply use snap turning. Do people not look at game settings anymore or something?
Rant over.
@subspecies: Do you even have a PC VR headset?
Eh ignore that, I'm in snappy mode.
Yeah I agree snap turning is annoying, but I plan on playing this game several times, its that good so hopefully it will be patched in shortly.
Snap turning is frustrating.
@Grey_Eyed_Elf: Sold my Quest. I had a Rift, but no longer (don't ask lol). Still have a Go, but obviously that's not going to help me with Alyx. I'm looking to upgrade to a Rift S soon. The stock shortage is real.
And you're forgiven for the snappy sh_t. Happens to all of us. Especially in times like this.
And snap turning is beyond frustrating. It's total garbage.
@subspecies: I think Valve were overly conscious of the title as an entry point to VR. Not a biggie for me, I always use it as a quick-turn with my head-movement going general motion, but I can see why people would have wanted it.
It also shows in the opening 1/5 of the game where it's very much hand-holding people into VR. You could see they were shitting their pants people would get overwhelmed.
If you're new, and most likely a large portion of people it will be an entry point then I guess it is good, but you've been playing the likes of Pavlov or Onward etc... be automatically attuned to this stuff.
I've seen some people claim it's not interactive as Boneworks, which is true, but what is also true is Boneworks is janky as hell, the VR aspects have been sensibly used where jank is basically non-existent.
Out of curiosity for you who own the game - it's actually good?
It's automatically became the benchmark and basically shat on every other SP FPS in the last 10 or so years. Once you've played this in VR, you won't want the next entry to be flat-screen, can guarantee that.
Having said that, the main plotline (at least at the start) is just super uninspired. Oh no, dads captured again, super-weapon. Now, all that may change and become interesting at the end, but currently? Eh.
The most impressive part was actually a really beautifully done wall painting using environmental story-telling to hint at what's going on as well as getting them nostalgia tingled fluttering.
But everything else is like being a luxury cruise, where all the flatscreen plebs are on dinghy screaming at you for help, it's great.
@uninspiredcup: Not gonna lie, you're not the first to talk about the whole VR entry-level feel here and there in Alyx, and as someone that has clocked in hundreds if not thousands of hours in VR that's a wee bit disappointing for me to hear. Such is the burden of early VR tech adopters. Regardless, though, the game looks awesome. I'm sure smooth turning will be patched in, among other things.
It's automatically became the benchmark and basically shat on every other SP FPS in the last 10 or so years.
no its not. far from it when Doom, Doom Eternal, Metro series, Black Mesa, Titanfall 2, Prey etc exist at all.
you can praise it my friend but calling it shat on every FPS is very bold statement as its barely FPS game.

My freind, as the resident FPS expert it doesn't feel right keeping you on flat-screen, had I the funds, happily ship a headset, be could be VR bros.
Sadly, such is the nature of the world, it's going to be you shouting at me and bringing down the mood, so sad.
Just gonna have to wait it out until the prices drop.

My friend, I even think new Halo will be better game than this. and it will be first time in history Halo will beat Half life in quality. it never happened before.
I (ie me) always shat on Halo and praise Half life. now table has turn.
looks like 10 ign and 9 here at gamespot. psvr please.
PSVR will show up, eventually. Valve said they're working on perfecting the game right now, and will move to other platforms later. With PS5 power Alyx will do just fine.
LMAO! Peasant beggars have started begging already.
@pc_rocks: I'll be playing Alyx on a Rift S, dude. I'm just saying that Valve have already made it pretty clear they're porting elsewhere.

Just giving you a taste of your own medicine. I don't really care. Why would I have a problem if more people get to play it.
Oh and it's Valve. They don't lock you down or poison the well with shitty tactics like exclusivity.

Maybe next generation consoles.
The base PS4 is still 90% of the install base and the HLA requires specification's of a PS4 Pro as minimum.
I am not sure a game like this is even possible on the base console in VR.
I have played all the best looking VR games on PC from Asgards Wrath to Lone Echo and Stormlands... This is a significant level above them all in terms of graphics.
EDIT:
When or if you get the Rift S get your self the Koss KSC75 as well, the built in speakers are okay but these are cheap and sound SUBSTANTIALLY better.
@Grey_Eyed_Elf: Nah it's gonna take the PS5 for sure. Just like with Fallout 4 VR. Fortunately the original PSVR will be powered by the PS5, as well as PSVR2 when it arrives.
@subspecies: Yeah I would get rid of the PSVR if you have one when the PS5 comes... Its way too low resolution for something as powerful as a PS5.
If Playstation have exclusive VR games next generation I think I'll end up get a PSVR2 along with a PS5.
@davillain-: I'm pretty much in the same boat. Spending a lot of money right now is probably not the best decision, especially if you have a family.
The electrical headcrab/possesion is very reminiscent of escalating gunship fights that culminates in battling two at once at Novaspect.
I think it's generally better because the enemy itself augments as you go on with the environment and circumstances drastically changing, rather than just "the same fight but more" where you just use the same weapon.
Again, also very reminiscent of Resident Evils mutations.

My PSVR is just too special to me. It was my first VR headset. I've had so many awesome experiences with it. It's basically just like my old consoles in terms of sentimental value (corny, I know). I could never get rid of it.
When PSVR2 comes along, like you I'll get it particularly for Sony exclusives, but also just because I'm sure I'll love the headset. Sony's design with VR hardware so far really appeals to me. I expect that to continue with PSVR2.
Valve should really patch in an NG+ I think.
Seems like an odd thing to say for a Halflife title, but since scavenging for resin, and weapon upgrades is now a thing (again Resident Evil) giving the player the option to bypass the stuff and use already upgraded weapons seems like a logical second through option.

So I just played an hour... I'm blown away! The sound and scale are incredible. It took me a bit to tune how I wanted to move around, but the learning curve only lasts a few minutes. The game controls great. Wow!
@uninspiredcup: Lol, nice. Looks like Valve heard my complaint. Best to not keep me waiting, Gabe. ;)
Finally got it, and will be setting it up soon. I'll be buying fewer games this year so I have to get the ones I hope will be worth it.
"I only began to realize just how much of a mark Half-Life: Alyx had left on my brain during a brief, social distance-respecting sprint through the grocery store. I don’t know how to describe it other than to say that it felt like I was still in VR. A hazy sensation of unreality persisted even as I interacted (at a distance) with actual people and places. Every time I turned I braced myself for the brief, screen-blanking blink that accompanies turning yourself via the analog stick in Half-Life: Alyx. I got way, way too close to shelves and counters, expecting to clip through their outer edges—not, you know, run into them and sustain a series of gnarly bruises like a human being who’s more than just a floating pair of outstretched hands.
Strangest of all, any time I looked at my phone, my eyes replicated VR’s distinctive illusion of three-dimensional space. Apparently my eyes had come to believe that any screen was a VR headset display. Looking at a small grocery list I’d prepared, I realized it had depth to it. The words seemed to be popping off the screen from within a rectangle-shaped hole.
These novel phenomena persisted for all of Sunday. I figured, however, that another night of sleep would bring me some sort of reprieve, hopefully clearing up the VR marathon’s lingering effects. The next day, that did come to pass, but not before one last excessively bizarre hallucination.
I laid down to go to bed but couldn’t fall asleep. Eventually, I opened my eyes and stared into the darkness for a little bit. On this pitch-black canvas my eyes painted a series of undulating, tendril-like objects that shimmered like television static. I didn’t like that one bit, so I closed my eyes again.
My hallucinations hit a fever pitch: What seemed to be tens of Half-Life: Alyx enemies on top of each other in a writhing mass. Headcrabs leaping, headcrab zombies lurching, Xen flora glistening. All were drenched in a deep red, making each individual movement almost indistinguishable from the greater whole. And before you ask: No, this was not a dream. The first time it happened, I opened my eyes, stood up, and walked around because, uh, what the ****??? When I laid back down and closed my eyes again, the hallucination persisted.
A few minutes into experiencing the strangest show to which this bedroom ceiling had ever played host, my curiosity overwhelmed my fear. I moved my head around with my eyes closed to see if it would replicate the effect of moving your head in VR. It did. My vision moved around the scene. It was at this point that I wondered: Had I ever actually left VR? Was I, in fact, trapped in the virtual realm? Had a VR headcrab taken over my brain? Were these the final visions of a human consciousness imprisoned inside a headcrab zombie?"
Gaming journalism was a mistake...
The Oculus Quest is too front heavy. I feel like its pulling my entire face downward.
If willing to drop money can buy an additional strap to help with that.

Actually the VR "supporter" in that gif made it look like she was bored, and I used it to portrait the way I feel about VR as a whole, so it served its purpose, and maybe this VR "supporter" shouldn't film herself looking like she's having a terrible time, as that's the way it comes across to anyone (even you) who sees it lol.
We all know you're one of the biggest Sony shills on here, not only that but a liar, and only own the PSVR You knew from the START this was on PC, so if you really wanted one you would have went out and bought one when you had the chance.
Others on here might swallow your BS, not me, so save your breathe.
@i_p_daily: No need for an essay, dude. You got trolled by a VR enthusiast, and took the bait like a chump. And due to this you got laughed out of the thread on the first page. Live with it.
Hesitant to even call this an FPS. You fight a few combine, but nowhere near the same amount as Halflife 2. It leans, very, very heavily on the horror element and in chapter 7 there is a bit that blows anything in RE2 out the water. It's like a tightly confined version of the plant monster from Halflife combined with garrador in RE4.
