Mmm... ...I love the smell of salt in the morning. It smells like... ...technological progress.
Anyone else getting Resident Evil vibes from the early sewer section? Feels closer to the horror game than Halflife 2.

Apparently later in the game there is an unkillable but blind zombie, which ofc sounds mighty like that guy from RE4.
@uninspiredcup I've only played it up the first weapon upgrade station (the one in the IGN 9min gameplay vid). I can't play with the left handed controls (it switches movement to right thumbstick), and If I try play right handed I can't aim for crap. Took like 3 clips to take down a zombie lol. Waiting for a patch that enables left thumbstick movement in left handed mode.
Speaking of controls, Alyx's smooth locomotion definitely feels like a hackjob. I hate you still have to teleport in certain scenarios, and I don't think you can even sprint which is just bizarre. I reaaally hope they add the ability to sprint.
@pinkribbonscars: Sorry to hear that. Mostly been fine on this end barring a quibble about a lack of height option, you can easily do it outside the game, but obviously you shouldn't need to.
Not too fussed about sprint, the walk/blink seems to work well. The combat, at least with the non-combine enemies has been slower and heavier, especially with manual reload, which I like a lot, leaves you open and diverts your attention while panicking.
But yea, you're not far from where I am, just got the flashlight, you'll see what I mean about Resident Evil.

Yes. I'm only about 30 minutes into the game, but...
*spoiler below*
I just got to the "quarantine zone" and it went from a sci-fi VR shooter to a survival-horror game pretty quick. The second I uncorked that blocker and the sticky cobweb strings pulled out and I saw the alien-world hive-tunnel (Xen? I don't know, probably) I just got spooked haha.
Scarier than Ravenholm? We shall see....
Real games.
Real games?...
I like fun mechanics to my games and some depth. Ignoring the fact that Half Life puzzle solving has always been abysmal, nothing I've seen of the puzzles in Alyx leads me to believe those aren't some brain dead ass puzzles being carried by some VR parlor trick. Everything looks hella simple. Which I'm sure is impressive to the born in Half Life 2 valve shills whose last real bit of puzzle solving in a game was Portal or Portal 2, but as someone who plays a healthy diet of Zachtronics puzzle games, Stephen's Sausage Roll, or recently Baba is You, color me not amused.
And so far VR shooter combat looks mad dull. Bog standard and always keeping the action in front of the player with the only real appeal the pointer aiming. In a world where Doom 5 lets me do this

I rather play an actual action game. My time with VR has been once the transcendent initial experience wears off of how cool the tech is, the actual games lack substance. Ergo I'll stick to Ori 2 n Doom for my fix, and wait till they can pull off something genuinely exciting in VR.
So I dug up my VR stuff, hooked some of it up and then realized my 2080Ti only has 1 HDMI out... I have my second monitor hooked up to that... Maybe tomorrow I guess. That and I have to attach the lighthouses to my walls again. At least the controllers are charged now!
According to Angry Joe ... is causing them nausea after a few minutes of play (40- 45 it seems) ... that's rough actually.

Angry Joe. There's a name I haven't heard in a while. And with a controversial opinion too. Strange...
Nah you were casual4ever tier level shilling this game, you even said it was going to save gaming, and for all that it only got a 9, flop confirmed.
And I have no idea who worthabuy is, (I'm assuming he/she is a YouTuber, since you kids love watching others game) so he/she acting like a tit as you put it means nothing to me, maybe you should message him/her about it.
Enjoy your flop :)
First the dude shows up and posts a gif of a girl, trying to make it seem like she's dissing VR, when he doesn't even realize that the girl freakin' works in VR, and she is simply having some fun. Then he crawls back into the thread once Alyx gets rave reviews, claiming the GS review isn't good enough.
The man(child) is a master of owning himself.
VR is still niche princess, and the funniest part is that because you're a Sony shill you can't even play this niche game LMFAO.
Real games came out this month and next month, I'll stick to those.
Probably the smartest thing I've seen you post here.

heres for once i agree with champ. I rather stick to real games than shitty gimmicks.
but I disagree about HL2 as game was almost perfect and masterpeice. this one feel like dumbed down cheap Half life if it was console game, everyone was criticize it. but its VR. it become holy grail.

in few month. game will be playable in theme park costing tickets and cool kids wear VR while paying for ticket to play it for 10 minutes.
Being unable to play because you can't rebind the controls in Left Handed mode is really frustrating. I dunno how this made it through QA. I know they cobbled together a half assed smooth locomotion mode last minute, but they should have assured users had the ability to rebind controls before launch. Hsving to wade through hundreds of "Waaah VR sucks waaaah" threads in search of a solution isn't helping, either. I don't even know if Valve are aware and are working on a patch. Oh well, back to Dragon Quest 11.
It's funny to see the two heavy hitters (Half Life and DOOM) go head to head.
DOOM has about 3x times as many players than Alyx at the moment. Keep in mind though, not a lot of people can afford 1000 dollar headsets for one game.
Alyx all time high - 42,858 concurrent players
DOOM all time high - 105,000 concurrent players
____
DOOMs numbers are high, and that's great for a linear FPS
Alyx numbers are high too, especially considering the VR attachment rate. It's crazy thinking about 42,858 enthousiast VR owners playing this at the same time.

Veiled shots because you're insecure about your own purchase and inability to handle an oppinion would be considered "childish behavior". Try again sport.

Hey you need something else to hold onto now that you have realised that SC may never release, so much so you changed your account name lol. Hold onto Alyx while you cry about Star Citizen lol

Trending on reddit. 2004 all over again.
@R4gn4r0k: Idk about traditional when discussing doom 3. It was very much inspired by some of the genres trends namely half life n system shock, but it was a huge departure from Doom and other ID like fps games.
Doom 3 wasn’t a trend setter (thank Christ), but to their credit they absolutely took that franchise in a different direction when they made that game.

The new more deliberate (3-5 hit) change from a percentage health system, limited inventory, with far more rationed resources compared to prior games where they practically fell out of the sky and the very limited upgrade system and basic scavenging all scream Resident Evil.
Honestly, if you just played the first quarter don't think you'd be off your tits straight up labeling it a horror game.
Just came across first manhack, in Halflife 2 they are mildly annoying, here shit my panties.
I played a bit of it last night before bed. One of the first things I noticed was how good the audio was and the graphics have to be the best of any VR game iv played so far. The game seems very immersive and really creepy and it's amazing how massive the citadel looks in the distance when you get a perspective of it in VR. I'm looking forward to jumping back into it later today.
The only thing that could hurt it is if the length of the campaign is too short. Other than that it's probably going to be the defining VR experience.
I'll say 10/10.
I think a 9.0 is the lowest it'll score.
9.5 MC
Uhh the reviews are out already. And 12-15 hours for VR experience is long.

Main criticism I heard when reading DOOM 3 reviews at the time is that it wasn't an evolution of the genre, and played way too much like DOOM 1&2.
Yeah, in hindsight, this criticsm wasn't exactly true. I loved DOOM 3 and I think it was a great change for the franchise.
But these reviewers couldn't help but compare DOOM 3 to its main competitors: Far Cry and Half Life 2, which were way more recolutionary for their time.
@R4gn4r0k: if that’s what the reviews said then they are on crack. It takes less than a minute with with either the first two doom games and then 3 to see how wildly different it is
But sure, it didn’t have the parlor tricks of its contemporaries. Or frankly the gameplay. Far Cry even with the bullshit trigun was a way funner game than doom 3.

Far cry 1 actually suck. huge potential but wasted. AI was trash plus second half mutants came. it become even more bad.
Far cry 2, now that was great.
Obvious huge interest for a new Half-Life game. Wasted market opportunity to put it on VR. Oh well, good for those few that will play it.

Oh come on Ghosty. Video game industry analysts are typically the scummiest motherfuckers in existence, If that prick had his way it would be a microtransaction riddled games as a service loot-box fest and you'd in the end, still be complaining.
At least this way you get to enjoy watching me enjoy a game, chin up.
I can't play Half Life: Alyx, but at least I can listen to the Half Life soundtrack in its entirety at work.
Kelly Baily is such a legend.
@uninspiredcup: @pinkribbonscars:
How is the new soundtrack? How does it compare to the old games in the franchise?
I'm still early in the game so I haven't heard much (haven't even fought the Combine yet), but from what I have heard it has a more Left 4 Dead vibe than a Half Life vibe. It's great though, really moody.
Also I'm trying to adapt to the "non remappable? dafuq were you thinking Valve not all lefties play left handed like that" Left Handed Controls because I can't wait for a patch. It's too agonizing having the game sittting there and not being able to play . _.

Meh.
Doom Eternal on other hand have much higher player on day one.
for a game valve thought it could sell millions. its not. only 15 people own VR care about this game.
compare to traditional games. its failure.
Half life 3 need to be traditional game. alyx focus on alyx who doesnot wear HEV suit.
Gordon does. gordon can sprint, and half life without sprint is not Half life. it need to be fast paced shooter with clever puzzles and physics.

Yeah, next you'll be telling me how Bobby Ko-dick thinks it's a wasted "market opportunity".
That Mat Piscatella is only concerned with wealth, profit, and sales. Guys like that don't care about the bigger picture, about games themselves.
