Have there been any true masterpieces yet this gen

At the time, almost 2 years ago, I considered Gears of War a masterpiece (things aren't masterpiece forever, now its just a great game). Revolutionized third person shooters and provided us the best graphics ever seen on a console and it was a lot of fun. Although I do not feel MGS4 will be a masterpiece because it is not doing anything that hasnt done before, what it is gonna do is gonna be done very well so it will be a great game, but nothing more

GTA IV.

Company of Heroes.

Bioshock.

Mario Galaxy.

While I won't try and define "masterpiece" for you, but what I consider a masterpiece is a game that will remain among the greats for a decade+. A game that will be in top 10 lists for a long time.

So far, the only ones I can think of that would fall in this list from this generation would be Portal, Super Mario Galaxy and possibly Bioshock. Considering what has been said so far about MGS4, I expect it to join the list. (If, as almost all sites/publications are saying, it surpasses all other metal gears in every way)

Down the road, at least so far, I could see a few games joining the list: LBP, Spore, Starcraft 2, RE5.

I think there are certain games that have the hype, at the moment, where people are expecting the games to be masterpieces (they may or may not, we just know way too little at the moment): God of War 3, Alan Wake, Final Fantasy XIII/Versus XIII, new Team ICO project (I would consider their only other two games masterpieces, so have high hopes for their next game), and I'm sure there are more that I'm forgetting..

I don't think any game has come out yet that would qualify as an "all-time classic". I doubt ten years from now we'll all look back on Mass Effect, Oblivion, Bioshock, ect. in the same manner we currently do for Ocarina of Time, FFVII, or System Shock 2.

Metal Gear could potentially be the game of the generation, but I would like to think we'll move beyond that before this console era is over.

Gears didnt revolutionise ANY genre.

It was just a well polished (not in the multiplayer department) game.

imo they were mediocre with rubbish stories and quite good multiplayers which kinda get boring after a while...

not saying theyre bad tho....

Gears of War is an extraordinary work of art. It's a splendid game.

imo they were mediocre with rubbish stories and quite good multiplayers which kinda get boring after a while...

not saying theyre bad tho....

Gears was a Masterpiece, IMHO. Gears multiplayer getting bored? Well say that to the thousand of people who play it every day, even 2 years after its release.

gears only scored great cuz of all the hype and the great graphics (yes i think theyre good). however games that are called masterpieces have stellar stories, great characters, amazing atmosphere and lots of other things that make a game that touches you....

perhaps gears did that to you but i seriously doubt Marcus Fenix or his crew left any lasting impression on you...

Games like stalker and metroid prime make my jaw drop at their immersive atmosphere..

Games like Metal Gear solid and Dreamfall : the longest journey really touch you and leave you a lasting impression that will never change.

Games like Geow and cod however just make me go "Meh, been there done that"

as for the multiplayer most of the geow players have either flocked to halo, cod or gta 4.

As I see it, a game does not need to have a plot of tremendously high quality in order to be called an extraordinary work of art. I'm aware of Gears of War's plot - it's not engaging attention, but I find the characters fascinating. However, as I've stated, I don't think that a game, in order to be called a 'masterpiece', needs to have a magnificent story.

Gears most certainly doesent define computer and video games, nor the genre. Honestly Resident Evil 4 does in this regard. It is however a great game.

I am attracted to well-written plots in games, but Gears of War is a game that I find tremendously gratifying, despite the fact that its story is not unique.

It's hard to say exactly.But I can tell you that,after watching a 10 minute video of the Creature Creator,I am already convinced that Spore will be GOTY.

Well, Halo 3 is a gratifying game, with a campaign that's magnificent. However, I wouldn't call it an 'extraordinary work of art'. As I see it, it was too hyped. Its entertaining campaign and funny multiplayer make it an enjoyable game. Nevertheless, I still wouldn't call it a 'masterpiece'.

Well, last time I checked a game just needed to ne incredibly fun to be considereda Masterpiece.

Mario Galaxy has not a great history, but there'S npo doubt it is a masterpiece.

Check the reviews, they all say that the graphics are great, but what gave it that washow freakin' fun tha game was.

And yeah, Geasr has great characters, amazing atmosphere and lots of other things that make a game that touches you, not only the graphics. I can undestand that you didn't like it (it is a matter of taste, after all), but denying its quality is going too far.

Console-wise no, for the most part all we've seen are games that score well based on hype alone. I mean Mass Effect, Gears Of War, Oblivion etc... are all above average games maybe in amazing in some respects but masterpieces no way in hell.

Well so far the only three games that I have played, enjoyed, and never left a sour taste in my mouth after finishing were:

Dead Rising

Bioshock

Mass Effect

I'm not really sure why, I certainly did enjoy a lot of other games this gen but besides those three I usually felt a level of, "Eh big deal".
