[QUOTE="beinss"]No other game comes close to the immersive feeling Bioshock gives.HenriH-42

lol. How about Deus Ex? How about Thief? How about System Shock 2?

How about STALKER, the game that won GS's most immersive award over Bioshock?

Oh man, I love STALKER. I just played it 5 hours straight last night (I know, no life :P)

i did that the other night too :P

Oblivion....in my opinionPAL360
i have to agree i personally think oblivion is the only masterpeice seen this generation the world is massive, there are 180 quests and side quests, more than 300 locations to find realistic day/night and weather effects, massive selection of armour and weapons, lot's of characters to play through and all the npc's have 'real life' routines. i have already clocked more than 500 hours on this game and i still play it, i bought oblivion with my 360 and i still have that copy to this date as this is one game i will never trade in.

I still don't understand if oblivion has true projectile physics or if its just a programing illusion,

regardless... the game still amazes me as I run through the hills hunting deer.

id so not really there has been some great games like mass effect pc, cod4, uncharted, gears and gta4 was a brilliant game but I still dont think there has been a true masterpiece this gen to me anyway that covers all bases from story to graphics/gameplay that just blows you away

I have a feeling mgs4 will be the first true masterpiece this gen, this is just my opinion though some people might think gears was a masterpiece just want to here opinions.

firebreathing

gears had a very weak story, so no it isnt a masterpeice.

I liked Oblivion and I'm sure many people will argue STALKER.DivergeUnify

STALKER's AI beats the hell out of oblivion. IN Oblivion characters just randomly wonder around, in STALKER they actually have daily activities. I remembr when i was playing stalker i was on the first story mission and a mutant pig came into the bandit camp, went up a set of stairs and killed a sniper bandit, while the raid was occuring >___> Also, in STALKER, the AI doesn't magically know where you are, if you hide behind a wall they will search for you and not just start shooting at the wall.

I don't think so. Well, I can't imagine people in 10 years time looking back on the games released so far this generation and thinking, "Man, that was a masterpiece".RobbieH1234

people look back on chrono trigger and think that's a masterpeice, so why not?

So far, from what I played, Portal seems to be that. It was only about two hours long, but that was a wonderful 2-hour game. Interesting gameplay, very comedic, and a wonderful puzzle game.Author_1990

yea, portal was pretty cool, hopefully they will expand on that game.

Do not pretend to be ignorant. A games does not need a good plot in order to be called a 'masterpiece'. Sure, story in games is significant, but it still doesn't mean that it does need a good plot in order to be called a 'masterpiece'.

the characters in oblivion have a scripted daily routine, they don't just 'wander round', anyone thats played oblivion knows that.

A scripted daily routine involving walking to point A during the day, and point B at night.

In all seriousness the Ai in oblivion is utterly terrible.

Compared to an RPG like The Witcher, it enforces this even more.

I really dont get why so many people like gears so much. I mean its nothing scpecial to me. Probably an 8.0. I stoppped playing it after the 3rd act and only ever played it again when i was playing with my friend. Even then i played much more Halo with my friends than it.

Gears of War, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl, and Grand Theft Auto IV.

Almost but not quite: COD4, Halo 3, Bioshock, LoZ:TP, Lost Odyssey, Viva Pinata.

Halo 3 is entertaining, as well, especially the campaign. But I prefer cutting my enemies in half and obtaining awesome head-shots. Halo 3 is fun, but in my opinion, Gears of War is better. It's just a seriously awesome game, like GameSpot said. In passing, Halo 3's hype was too big!

They EAT? I have never seen an NPC consume any food.

And yes as I said they go to point A during the day (a place of work or a field ect.- stand there) and B at night (their residence).

Thats it.

Besides its well known how terrible the a.i in Oblivion is......

Portal, Bioshock, GTA IV, Burnout Paradise.

Portal-A true gem of fantastic writing and innovative gameplay merged in to one short and sweet experience.

Bioshock-I loved exploring Rapture and I enjoyed the story.

GTA IV and Burnout Paradise- 2 of the best open world environments ever. Criterion is turning DLC on it's head and I hope other companies look and see how they are doing it when they consider DLC for their open world games. GTA IV has the best virtual enviroment ever.

These games are masterpieces in various ways and I think they all fit the bill.

I don't know whats worst, the fact that you think it's a masterpiece or that you risk self-ownage to defend it.

Apparently, you think it's sad if anyone thinks that a highly successful game that scored "9.6" at GameSpot is a 'masterpiece', and better than the overhyped Halo 3. *Biggest Er sigh in human history*

No, I'm just telling you my opinion on the highly overhyped game, Halo 3. The only fun weapons are the Sniper and grenades. And Master Chief is cool, multiplayer is fun and campaign is epic, but it's still overrated!!!!!!!

I never said Halo was a masterpiece... or even better!

What I took offence too was that gears has some sort of advantage between the two because of chainsaws and headshots. That logic just.... fails!

EDIT: oh and if you are gonna score-monger, GTAIV says hello

IMO Lost Odyssey...it nails each area for me. I would also include Ninja Gaiden 2,but the story isn't much to brag about.:) Lost Odyssey and Mass Effect are both superb IMO.

Still 200 times better kill than any in Halo 3.

Personally I find the gravity hammer to be one of the most satisfying and fun weapons to use in any game...

That weapon is boring to use.

Yes beating people with a massive hammer and watching those hit fly through the air is dull right? :?

Your opinion overrides everything right? :|

[QUOTE="TheUtmost"]Halo 3 is entertaining, as well, especially the campaign. But I prefer cutting my enemies in half and obtaining awesome head-shots. Halo 3 is fun, but in my opinion, Gears of War is better. It's just a seriously awesome game, like GameSpot said. In passing, Halo 3's hype was too big! FragTycoon

chainsaws on guns and headshots = masterpiece.....

*sigh*

It was just two examples. Obviously, you haven't played Gears of War.

Hype + good multiplayer = masterpiece? *Big sigh*

Obviously, anyone who disagrees with you haven't played the game.... *big-ER sigh*

I never said Halo was a masterpiece... or even better!

What I took offence too was that gears has some sort of advantage between the two because of chainsaws and headshots. That logic just.... fails!

EDIT: oh and if you are gonna score-monger, GTAIV says hello

Yes, GTA. No, it doesn't fail, one of the greatest kills in gaming history is an advantage, and in Halo 3, most boring headshots. fail

Yes, it's pretty lame, actually, nothing if you compare it to revving up the bloody, violent chainsaw, cutting him in half, hearing him scream loudly, shaking much, seeing the blood spraying all of your screen, to see him fall down in many pieces

So sadism = more fun?

Nice to know your assessment is purely subjective

Burnout Paradise- 2 of the best open world environments ever. Criterion is turning DLC on it's head and I hope other companies look and see how they are doing it when they consider DLC for their open world games.

Clearly theres so many people this generation that expect so little from games and will give any game they remotely liked the title of master piece. These people wouldn't know a true master piece if hit them in the face. They've simply got lower standards than us who can see the true master piece games. GTA4 for example, never in a million years does it deserve the ammount of sales it's raked up and never does it deserve the title master piece. Same goes for games like GeOW, HALO3, COD4, ME. These games I call generic.

:] It REALLY starts to pick up towards the end of disc 1. I'm currently on disc 3 and loving it...NG2 is taking away time for it though.

In my opinion, Super Mario Galaxy was a truemasterpiece, there have been plenty of great games, like Stalker and the Orange Box (which managed to come close to Galaxy), but SMG still prevails relative to the others.

Exactly. 99% of games in the last few years have felt unbelievably "meh..." for me. Thankfully, there are still many old games that I've yet to play.

F.E.A.R. has the same kind of AI that most modern games (especially CoD4!!!) have. It's 100% scripted, and so long as you do what the developers intended/thought you would do, it seems like it's the best AI ever. It's easy to do seemingly good AI when they just spawn at certain points and do scripted actions for 5 seconds before you PWN them.

People who bash for example STALKER's AI need to think that the world is friggin' huge and the AI is still there, even when you're not around.

Poor Dead Rising, nobody really appreciate this game and nobody talking about it, I think people are shy to talk about other than mainstream games. :x

Dead Rising is the best game I've played this gen so far and consider as a masterpiece.
