Is this game any good, or are you calling it a 'masterpiece' due to the fact that its plot is of high quality (?)?
*guesses*[QUOTE="mo0ksi"]Nope not at all. Throughout my entire history of gaming there are only two that I can call a "Masterpiece"RobbieH1234
Grim Fandango and one of System Shock 2/Deus Ex/S.T.A.L.K.E.R?
Close. It's Grim Fandango and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.[QUOTE="StealthedRogue"]Well so far the only three games that I have played, enjoyed, and never left a sour taste in my mouth after finishing were:
Dead Rising
Bioshock
Mass Effect
I'm not really sure why, I certainly did enjoy a lot of other games this gen but besides those three I usually felt a level of, "Eh big deal".
Hype_Status
Dead Rising? That game was gratifying, but a 'masterpiece'?
Simply an opinion, besides I only said that it was enjoyable and didnt leave a sour taste afterwards. Masterpiece no. One of the few enjoyable games this gen? Yes.
Oblivion? Seriously people, play a REAL Elder Scrolls game, not that crap.
As for me, I would say Mass Effect and Twilight Princess. I almost put Halo 3 and the Orange Box, but Halo 3 doesn't quite reach "masterpiece: status, and Im not sure OB even counts.
[QUOTE="vicmackey39"][QUOTE="Solid_Tekken"]Yeah Metal Gear Solid 4 is coming up next week, the game that will raise the bar in terms of cinematics, gameplay, story telling, sound and animation.Zassimick
metal gear solid 4 is an interactive movie
Metal Gear Solid 4 is a video game with a good story and very cinematic storytelling.
But, even if it would be classified as an "interactive movie," that "interactive movie" will more than likely be better than many actual video games are out now.
Hmm, I checked out dictionary.com and convoluted dosn't mean the same as "great". MGS gets high produciton values, and great cinematics, ok gameplay but the story is crap... IMO it seems like Kojima filled out a bunch of madlibs to come up with MGS plot devices.IMO no i thought GeoW laid down the foundations but didnt quite do it and no 2 would (and still might) but it looks a bit same-ish i thought liberty city itself was mind blowing but GTA4 was a let down in terms of story and characters
im pinning my hat on something like spore or LBP to be compltely differemt and then MGS4, GT5, KOTR3, FF13, RE5 and episode 3 (please god make it soon!) to be the pinacle of already established genres

I said it was a good story with... well, you can read my quote. :)
You might see that as what the story to MGS is, others might too. But I believe the story is well told with a lot of good dialogue and things going on. And if MGS3 is any indication, MGS4 is going to have a good story with one hell of an ending.

Cinematics? I'd agree.
Storytelling? Again, I'd agree.
Sound and animation? Very understandable.
Gameplay? I SERIOUSLY doubt it. It will be good, but I doubt it'll hold a candle to games like Super Mario Galaxy in terms of gameplay.
Can somebody tell me how MGS4 will raise the bar in terms of gameplay?
Bioshock. No other game comes close to the immersive feeling Bioshock gives. the story line is so great and the gameplay is exceptional. Its eerie mood and voice acting all make for the better.beinss
[QUOTE="HenriH-42"][QUOTE="beinss"]No other game comes close to the immersive feeling Bioshock gives.PBSnipes
lol. How about Deus Ex? How about Thief? How about System Shock 2?
How about STALKER, the game that won GS's most immersive award over Bioshock?PORTAL!!!!!!!!!!!albi321Honestly I think this is the one game that is more a masterpiece over the others...
Off the top of my head, Portal, Bioshock, and Super Mario Galaxy. I think if yo uhave to think too much about it, it's not really masterpiece level to said individual. The three games I listed are the three games that immediately came to mind when thinking about true masterpieces this generation. All three were just deeply memorable and just thinking about them has me wanting to play them again.
There are certainly some memorable mentions, Dead Rising, No More Heroes, Uncharted, the list goes on.

How about STALKER, the game that won GS's most immersive award over Bioshock?Oh man, I love STALKER. I just played it 5 hours straight last night (I know, no life :P)
id so not really there has been some great games like mass effect pc, cod4, uncharted, gears and gta4 was a brilliant game but I still dont think there has been a true masterpiece this gen to me anyway that covers all bases from story to graphics/gameplay that just blows you away
I have a feeling mgs4 will be the first true masterpiece this gen, this is just my opinion though some people might think gears was a masterpiece just want to here opinions.
bigLLL
gears had a very weak story, so no it isnt a masterpeice.
I liked Oblivion and I'm sure many people will argue STALKER.DivergeUnify
STALKER's AI beats the hell out of oblivion. IN Oblivion characters just randomly wonder around, in STALKER they actually have daily activities. I remembr when i was playing stalker i was on the first story mission and a mutant pig came into the bandit camp, went up a set of stairs and killed a sniper bandit, while the raid was occuring >___> Also, in STALKER, the AI doesn't magically know where you are, if you hide behind a wall they will search for you and not just start shooting at the wall.
I don't think so. Well, I can't imagine people in 10 years time looking back on the games released so far this generation and thinking, "Man, that was a masterpiece".RobbieH1234
people look back on chrono trigger and think that's a masterpeice, so why not?
So far, from what I played, Portal seems to be that. It was only about two hours long, but that was a wonderful 2-hour game. Interesting gameplay, very comedic, and a wonderful puzzle game.Author_1990
yea, portal was pretty cool, hopefully they will expand on that game.
