Part I: The Mysterious Package

The moment I opened the package, I could see it, a smirking Reggie, flanked by a team of Japanese dudes... "we would like to play Mr. Subrosian... we would like to play". I pinched myself, just to be sure... nope, not a dream, this was real.

I received an odd package in the mail on Thursday. A Wii. This was a curious thing, after all, bringing a Wii into a home with a 360, PC, and DS already was begging for trouble. Surely there would be sparks. I set up the Wii in isolation.

Woah, it's my Wii. Check out the Mega Man 2, Strong Bad, and No More Heroes action. It's like you're in my home, without having to deal with how creepy it'd be if you were all on my couch. Seriously... get the hell out of the compound, how'd you even get in here?

.

.

I'll get into my impressions, comments, et cetera later - after all, a Nintendo fan who dislikes the Wii, you can predict what I'm going to say, right? Probably not, you're in for some surprises. But first, if Portal has taught me anything, there's science to do! I decided it was best to introduce the systems to each other, and deal with the war.

Part II: Testing the War

Some of the world's greatest scientific discoveries have occurred on kitchen tables - and I base that claim on absolutely nothing. None the less, this "instrument" would make for a great laboratory - sturdy, clean, made of oak. I decided to introduce two mortal enemies - the 360, and the Wii, in a controlled experiment. Let's watch the bloodshed!

.

.

Hmm... nothing. They're just... sitting there. Oh wait! I'm breaking a rule though, this is "system wars" not console wars. We'd better get a gaming PC in there before Casey loses it.

.

.

Yeah, that's a sweet custom build... no Dell for us. But wait, where's the violence? They don't seem to be, y'know, fighting... Ah wait, in System Wars there's a stake: ownage. We need to give these guys some incentive, a prize, if you will. I don't know what systems like, so I figured beer (from Belgium!), money, and a fresh blueberry muffin. Something for everyone.

.

.

Money is on the table boys (or ... girls... or things), still no fighting? Hmm... well in System Wars I've noticed that people like to fight over exclusives. Maybe if I give these systems some *exclusive games* to hold they'll bring the brawl.

.

.

Those are some damn fine games. Let the war begin! ... I'm waiting... nothing? Nothing!?! I set up this whole photo shoot and you aren't going to fight? Bah... what a bunch of pansies.

.

Part III: Concluding the Experiment

.

Systems don't seem to fight on their own. No matter how upset I am at Nintendo's game selections for the Wii, or how much I enjoy SOASE and LO, my PC and 360 don't open fire on the Wii. In fact, systems don't fight on their own at all - and really neither do the companies behind them. In the real world, systems just sit there, and, well, play games.

The System War comes from us, it's an imaginary thing, in an imaginary place. But of course, I couldn't let you go with just this, I have my impressions of the Wii, but I thought, y'know, we should have some humor first, we should have a laugh and a reality check - because while I'm 100% correct, I'm also 100% correct in an assessment that can't possibly reflect every gamer, person, human being on a planet of six billion - and certainly it's worth noting that a great deal of this is simply occurring in our own minds.

Part IV: The Wii versus Everyone Else Toward's Subrosian's Vision of the Future

...

That title is pretentious enough to be a thesis.

...

As mandated by System Wars law (or something, do I look like I've read the TOU? What's that? I wrote the SW Intro and rules reminder? Oh.. um.... look fast, an amazing nearly-extinct distraction is right behind you!)

...

I could sit here and regurgitate everything I dislike about the Wii, and believe me, later in this thread I probably will. But you deserve something new, something controversial, something to discuss around the water cooler, so without further ado, let me kick Microsoft in the nuts.

...

I went on XBLA and downloaded Sonic the Hedgehog. Yes, the original Sega Genesis game, thinking "wow, this will be fun". Feel free to take a look at my gamertag if you don't believe me - 200 of 200 achievement points. And y'know what pisses me off? The emulation is wrong. They cut out the title screen (meaning no level select and no debug mode) and made little changes that throw off the "feel" of the game. I have the SEGA collector's editions on the GCN, and they were far better. On the Wii, you get the actual games when you download them. The *original games*.

-

In fact, one of the Wii's best features isn't its ability to play current generation games (which it only has a handful of I personally feel are of note) but its ability to perfectly play last generation games. My vision of the future has always been one without platforms, one where you can download any game you want for a price. Look, let's be real for a second, it's *stupid* that you have to buy 3, 4, 5 systems in a generation to play the games. Why should I be spending thousands upon thousands of dollars on hardware, when what I *really want* is software?

.

This, this is what makes the Wii shine:

$10. Yeah, $10, for one of the greatest games of all time, instantly, perfectly emulated, on my Wii. Let me point this out, there are now two platforms that do this: PC and Wii. The Xbox 360 doesn't do it - emulation is only "ok" for 360 games, and XBLA is great for new games, but has imperfect version of old games. Here, on the Wii, they do it right. This, this is one of the best things Nintendo has done.

-

I downloaded Mega Man 2. There was no way it was going to work in 480p, no way it was going to have all the original flickering, glitches, weird exploits, etc... oh wait, no, it does. Pixel perfect to the NES version I hold so dear - yet running without any input lag or other such problems on my HDTV.

-

"Who cares about old games Sub?" - well, 95% (and that's being generous to current generation games) of the best games every created are from previous generations. In fact, the most well known games of all time are *not* currently on store shelves, nor will they go back into print. Seen Final Fantasy VII at Best Buy lately? I don't think so. Imagine if you will, a future where you can push a button and *download* your favorite old games. That's an amazing possibility - and it's one I want to see. I should add, the Wii plays *every Gamecube game* perfectly. In fact, the majority of them run in 480p, something I've found *not* to be true even of the Xbox 360, a far more powerful system.

-

Well done Nintendo - that's the praise you're getting out of me. You know how much I *dislike* the Wii, what Nintendo has done, et cetera - I will praise that - the emulation is where it should be, the library of old titles, while not perfect, is certainly one of its strongest features. Any system where I can play five generations of Zelda (NES, SNES, N64, GCN, and Wii) has done something correctly.

-

But Subrosian? Where is the hate?

Oye, yes, my anger, it's coming. Here's Nintendo's problem. I've played the Wii, quite a bit, in fact. But I had not yet run the Wii at home on an HDTV in 480p widescreen. In fact, even when I first got my Wii home, I ran it on the SDTV because I didn't feel like doing the whole "set this up in the living room" thing. But Nintendo? The decision to go with 480p as your maximum resolution... was terrible.

Having it at home, I'm even more upset about it. It's simple math, at 4:3 the Wii's imagine is 720 x 480, if you left it at 480p non-widescreen, on a 720p set, the Wii would have to fill 960 x 720 pixels, not bad at all, a 33% stretch. But if you go 1280 x 720, you have a ton more pixels for the Wii to fill. With 480p widescreen, you're betting on the HDTV to do your picture justice, and well, the internal scalars on some HDTVs are just bad. Microsoft did a smart thing this generation - they put a great scaling chip in the 360. Was it a little pricey? Sure - but I know regardless of whether or not I have a computer monitor, 720p set, or 1080p set it works. Same with my PC. Sony and Nintendo both needed to learn from their past systems and put in scaling chips.

-

On the Gamecube you needed an expensive cable. On the PS2, 480p was out of the question for most games, and widescreen was often done by cutting off parts of the picture. The GCN supported 480p - and I'm glad the Wii does (interlacing is a terrible thing for games) but having a scalar chip would have ensured that the Wii's awesome Virtual Console abilities would be usable five, ten, fifteen years from now - as is we simply have to hope the Wii 2 has this feature.

-

-

The other thing that pisses me off about the Wii? No More Heroes, Metroid Prime 3, and Mega Man 9. Huh? You heard me.

-

I'm sorry sir, I waved my Wiimote and your head fell off

-

I'm not the world's biggest fan of this game - I think the gameplay gets repetitive, and idea of "twisting" the Wiimote is at times wrist-challenging. On the other hand, it's bloody, violent, sexually graphic, offensive, and wholly unapologetic. No, I don't mean that we should automatically have Mario where blood and coins shoot out, or that being violent makes a game inheriently better, it's simply that No More Heroes is unique. This game reminds me of an era in the early Gamecube years when we saw Eternal Darkness, Killer 7, Viewtiful Joe, Pikmin 1 (the challenging version of Pikmin 2 :|), Metroid Prime, Resident Evil, Melee, et cetera. In some ways those games are there on the Wii (sans the Eternal Darknes) - but in some ways they've lost some of their luster.

Part of the appeal was, those games were new experiences at the time - they were *way* different, you weren't finding anything else like them on the shelf. And that's what made them awesome. When I see Strongbad on the Wii, I'm left thinking "this could be done on the PC, but it could not be done as well on another console". I've played point-and-click on joysticks - Willy Beamish on the Sega CD, C&C 3 on the 360 - and it just doesn't work.

-

No More Heroes is sort of a tribute to what the Wii *could be* - it could be a system creating more of these kind of games. It's *possible* in fact, I feel it *should happen*. The Wii (and we) deserve more of these type of games. We deserve games you can't get anywhere else - we deserve this kind of attention.

-

To put it simply - the Wii's good is that it does emulation and backwards compatibility far better than any other console (the PS3 and 360 are frankly bull compared to the Wii in that regard). However, for current generation games Nintendo plays it far too safe - on a console with creative hardware, we should have more creative new software for long time gamers.

It finally happened!

My fellow sheep...we've endured many things. We've endured teh megaton, we've endured Jeff's wrath, and we've endured E3 '08. But now, I'm afraid this is the end.

Subrosian has a Wii.

...

...

....

What does this mean? We have little time, but while I still have some shred of sanity, please allow me to explain.

As we all know, 100% of SW believes that one cannot be biased against a system if he or she owns that system. We also know that "teh bias" is the foundation of SW. People will respect you and follow your every word if and only if you're unbiased, and of course, we all know that being unbiased is very possible.

Here is SW's position on Subrosian:

____________________________________

55% Want to have Subrosian's children

34% Agree with Subrosian

10% Kind of agree with Subrosian

1% Other

___________________________________

This means that all this time, the only thing keeping Subrosian from controlling SW completely was the fact that he did not own a Wii. Now, he can say whatever, and SW will agree.

If he says "Nintendo doesn't make games, fool," then we'll all lament the lack of third party support even more.

If he asks "Why do we never see PC doing HD?" then we'll all wonder why.

If he says "Turn 360 degress and walk away," then damnit, you'll moonwalk MJ''s nose off!

My friends, Subrosian has completed his dastardly combo, and it is far too late for a counterspell. But, there is still something we can do. My fellow sheep, here are our options.

Lol at comic. Also you need broken wrist straps to send Wiimotes flying, RROD and overclocking to make the other two burst into flames. Then you'll have a system war

Its cute, but factually inaccurate.

You just have friendly systems.

My PS3 hooked its exhaust into my 360, overheating the 360 and causing the RRoD, and then the Wii fired back, hitting the PS3 repeatedly with its sensor bar. It was looking good for the Wii, but then the PC fell over, crushing the Wii. However the PC pulled its power cord out in the process, leaving no victory, but lots of losers.

War is hell.

Well technically I am also a fan of Animal Crossing, but Nintendo said "no NES games" :| which leaves me feeling rather a bit annoyed - it is yet to be seen if there will be DS compatibility with this game as well (I'm guessing no) so that kind of leaves me going "well... this is kind of not quite a technical achievement in the way the GCN era was).

I guess that would be my simplest summary - the Wii's good is that it does emulation and backwards compatibility far better than any other console (the PS3 and 360 are frankly bull compared to the Wii in that regard). Well, I agree that Nintendo is playing a bit too safe. I don't think I am picking up Animal Crossing though, I'm just going to wait for those reviews of third party games coming out and download some WiiWare titles. Heck, I'm buying more Ps3 and 360 games this year than wii games.

Someday, I should get a game from the Virtual Console. I'm not sure why I don't. I tend to be very reluctant to get DL games, but Braid and Castle Crashers were purchases I'm very happy with, so...

I really agree with your second post, about No More Heroes, at least in some respects. I initially had a lot of concerns about the Wii (a lot of which have proven legitimate), but the thing I've always liked about it, and still like about it, is that it removes the focus from cutting-edge tech, and towards making good games. Development costs have been rising, and it makes it harder to make new, original titles. A console that doesn't go all out allows developers to spend less on asset creation, and spend more time on getting the fundamentals of whatever product they make right.

But if talented studios don't make titles for the consoles, what do you get? Suda and Grasshopper's efforts with No More Heroes are a rare exception for third-parties, where most games are either ports or eager efforts from new, inexperienced, or low-budget teams. And while those efforts could bear fruit, when most teams with any money and experience are working on the 360 or PS3, I can't help but feel that a huge opportunity is being missed on the Wii.

Agreed.

It basically is why I look at stuff like Madden and Force Unleashed on the Wii and go "why bother?". What's worse is, for some of these games, they're making a version for 360 / PS3 / PC, and another version for PS2 / Wii. So the Wii gets PS2 graphics, when it's capable of far better.

No More Heroes really makes me long for seeing the third parties (and Nintendo too) step up and say "even if the Wii is less powerful, we should be trying new techs on it". After all, the Xbox was more powerful than the GCN, and yet the GCN did some things that the Xbox didn't do - now, granted, 480p vs 720p is a big thing, and the Wii isn't going to win a graphics contest - but if you're working with lower budgets anyway, why not spin the wheel? Why not take a risk on something *other* than another carnival games?

In that regard I feel obligated to own No More Heroes simply for being different - and yes, perhaps I will buy Zak & Wiki, and yes I'll get Homestar Runner games and Megman 9 - because that's what I think the Wii *should be* - it's what we looked at the Wii and wanted (at least... I did, as a long time gamer).

If a company's going to do it, now is the time. With no Nintendo releases out, we have a prime season for thrid parties to do their thing.

Betcha noone's gonna do it , though.

Why not take a risk on something *other* than another carnival games?

subrosian

But what's the point of trying new tech if in the end you're still going to look significantly worse than any competant Xbox 360 game? That's the feeling I get when I look at something like the Conduit...okay the graphics are better than 99% of Wii games but it still doesn't look a whole lot better than an Xbox game.

I will steal your scientifically tested Wii - seriously, don't be hating on the Wii for anything. It's not even fair, you don't like it and you got it in the mail for free? How? Where's my Nintendo love?

I think when subrosian meant "new tech", he meant the gameplay mechanics involving the Wii Remote moreso than graphical. Even then, I think a good artst*le can easily make a game look great if developers take advantage of the hardware.

Heh, I was thinking of submitting the other day, but decided against it.

Oh and I'm pretty sure chaz is the only one who can shamelessly advertise.

Science, Comics, and Microsoft. For a second there I thought you were talking about how MS goes to events like Comicon and Bringing it Home over Xbox LIVE.

I'm trying to beat the crap out of Willy (Mega Man 2 ... Dr. Willy... not the SW poster... at least not at the moment).

Epic as always Willy.

It's louder than your opinion, and made of candy :P Also Good-Bye Nintendo, and Good-Bye Nintendo II ... ah crap, I know what this thread should have been called, time for a name change. In all seriousness, it's not "more important" it's "historically interesting to System Wars"... at least, so I've been told.

Hey, it worked for me, too.

Admittedly, I had to win a video game tournament for it, but still.

News has reached us at SWM (from a source that shail not be named) That you now own a Wii, effectivly eliminating one of the few marks agenst your already spotless credibility on SW...how did you go about deciding that now was the time and how to get one?

I didn't! It showed up at my front door in a box mailed via DHL. The weirdest thing was the packing material - they didn't use pellets, they actually just rolled up a bunch of large mailing envelopes to pad it. It got here intact though, so I guess it didn't need any more padding.

Total cost to me: $0

Excellent thread Subrosian, pure excellent.

I'm glad there were some stuff on what you like about the Wii

And to willy105, So Sub planned this system war comic out?

subrosian

Well technically I am also a fan of Animal Crossing, but Nintendo said "no NES games" :| which leaves me feeling rather a bit annoyed - it is yet to be seen if there will be DS compatibility with this game as well (I'm guessing no) so that kind of leaves me going "well... this is kind of not quite a technical achievement in the way the GCN era was).

I guess that would be my simplest summary - the Wii's good is that it does emulation and backwards compatibility far better than any other console (the PS3 and 360 are frankly bull compared to the Wii in that regard). However, for current generation games Nintendo plays it far too safe - on a console with creative hardware, we should have more creative software for long time gamers.

actually I heard that there's gonna be some DS/wii connectivity for animal crossing. Apparently you can transfer your character from the DS game into the wii game or something like that.

I'm not sure if i'm liberty to name my benefactor :P - but they had the sense to address it to the one person in my household who wouldn't let me say "no". I can't comment entirley on a "broad view" of my personal Wii having only had it a few days - I haven't done that for the 360, and I've had it almost a year.

-

My feelings on the system are quite mixed -as an old school Nintendo fans, it does play the four generations of Nintendo games (NES, SNES, N64, GCN) that highlight the years where Nintendo really defined themselves and pushed the envelope. On the Wii side though, things are a bit melancholy - there is always good - but it's the first time I've looked at a Nintendo system and said "this probably couldn't be the only system I owned in the generation".

I guess the odd thing is, I imagine spending more time going back and replaying the old Zeldas, Metroids, Kirbys, Star Fox, et cetera than I necessairly do going over older games. I don't know how I'd feel having only this system though at this point in the generation - I'd be a bit, odd, to say the least. It's also quite a kick in the teeth for the third parties. How do you sell Carnival Games for $40 when Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, and Mario 64 are only $10 each?

My DS version hasn't been played in over six months, at this point my DS character is probably dead, after becoming lost in a field full of weeds.

Great thread guys.

However I have to disagree with the idea that Nintendo is playing it safe. The route they have taken with their hardware is anything but safe as they have eschewed 20 years of conventional console wisdom in releasing the under-powered Wii. The games from Nintendo -excluding the traditional games which they released to please the core- have been very risky too. It takes serious balls to release a $90 board and *fitness* game.

What would you have Nintendo do?

Great read, I tend to agree on many of those points, but I still do enjoy the handful of excellent titles that are on the Wii, despite some of them losing their luster from previous gens' forays into new territory. The VC is just an excellent added bonus, and a scaling chip would definately benefit those HDTV Wii owners.

I also smiled at the System "War" you had going there. :D

EDIT: I lol'd at the comic, Willy. And it's been ages since I've seen a "megaton" thread here in SW like this, especially from the likes of Sub. Seriously history in the making.
