I have a fully upgraded PC and have tried playing The Witcher and SC, but...

So recently I upgraded my PC to a "capable" current gen gaming PC. GeForce 8800, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HD, Athlon dual core, etc. etc. I decided to get the games that I thought would be most appealing to a longtime console gamer.

My experience was mixed. I enjoyed the multiplayer aspect of SC, but did not enjoy the lack of communication between me and the other competitors. I enjoyed the graphics, but was by no means blown away by either games visuals on medium settings. I have played these games for a total of 11 days. Since then I have decided that PC gaming is not for me. I have gone back to playing COD4 and DMC4 on my 360. I'm sorry but I don't understand the appeal of PC games, and I don't know if its just me or if PC gaming is missing something. My 2 year old son would come around and watch as I played 360, but he doesn't do that with PC. My best friend thinks I'm going to become a nerd soon. Does anybody else who has TRIED to get into PC gaming felt like this?

Show me a copy of the receipt for your PC upgrade, and I'll believe you.

Otherwise, this thread is pointless.

It's possible to invent an history to actually claim that pc gaming suck in system wars forum. Seriously, you can't even tell your complete comp spec or talk about the sp experience of Stalker or the witcher. And graphic on medium for both game with a dual core atlon and a 8800=bs. You are a fakeboy until proved otherwise.

Is there html i can import in the post to show my specs? Look, I seriously have no reason to just make this up. Maybe it was the game selection. I downloaded Plane Scape Torment and Civ IV in hopes that will engage me more, so its not like im not giving PC its fair shot, but if I play those more, then maybe that just means the current crop of PC games is not very appearling to gamers like me.

I'll try it. Do people actually communicate in the multiplayer sessions?

you really picked a bad game for "Communication." It is basically the least team based RTS I have ever played online. It is really skill dependent but not team dependent. A single person can outmaneuver an entire team in SupCom.

Try something like WiC.

Also, put those games on Max settings. You can run on Max with an 8800... Also, try TF2. Communication isn't particularly important there either but there is a fair amount of communication on good servers. CoD4 is another good game to get for the PC. As for SP, give the Witcher some more time, it may be slow to get started but it is great. Basically, Act I is an appetizer for the game. Put it on Max also. Get Crysis, you should be able to either get Very High(make sure you have both the patch AND the latest drivers though) or half-High, half-Very High. BF2 is another great game. Counter-stike. Oblivion has tons of great mods.

Also, don't forget to play some older games if the poor graphics don't turn you off from the game. Starcraft, Fallout, Fallout 2, Baldur's Gate 2, Half-Life. All well worth playing.

And, Sins of a Solar Empire. Get that game. There is SOME communication but don't expect a ton. It isn't very team based either but my god is it addicting.

edit- just trying to be helpful... even if I do think you are just a fakeboy...

If you want good communication on PC games, then you find servers with interesting players, bookmark it, and go there often, or search for clan/clan servers ...

So much better than random kid spam I get on 360 games.

a person can not judge pc gaming (or at least pc fpss) until they have played css - that's my 2 cents.

if you like fps games my suggestion is that you buy the orange box along with the source multiplayer pack (which includes css) and buy battlefield 2 ($10 on amazon). see if that changes your mind at all about pc gaming. at the very least get css which is like $20 on steam

Wow, some real knowledge instead of the usual "I don't believe you" stuff. Thanks man. Like I said I have no reason to lie. I'm honestly trying to stay away from FPS games on PC as I have a "comfort zone" with them on 360 (more likely I'm just scared I'll get creamed due to my unfamiliarity with them on PC) but I will try Baldur's gate2 and Fallout 2 and Sins of the Solar Empire (which I thought about getting, anyway)>

I figured that out a long time ago... I used to not think I was that crazy about Half Life 2. I tried playing it a handful of times on my PC using the mouse and keyboard but inevitably would get bored of playing it (same with other games such as Max Payne 2, Unreal and GTA3). I recently picked up Orange Box for the XBox 360 and couldn't put HL2 down until I finished it. For some reason I dislike playing games on the PC the way they were meant to be played (with the mouse and keyboard). I think it's because I don't like being cramped at a desk in front of the monitor. It's just way more comfortable to site back on a couch.

I realize you can hook a PC up to a TV and use an XBox 360 controller but It's a pain moving a desktop machine back and forth for work and play, and I prefer laptop machines which suck for gaming unless you're willing to shell out big bucks. So for me it's gaming on my Wii/XBox 360 and computing on my laptop.

I like mods but can live without them. I did mess with them in the past but they were nothing more than a distraction for me.

Perhaps you need to get a little more nerdy in order to fully understand what you are dealing with here. Crank up the resolution of your game as high as your monitor will allow, boost the settings as high as they will go and give your keyboard and mouse a month to feel comfy. If you come back complaining after that, then I'll bite on your gripe.

I think you picked the wrong games.

You should have picked:
Civilization IV - yes, you actually learn a bit of history while gaming.
Sins of a Solar Empire - if you like master of orion, or strategy, this is it.
Crysis or UT3 - There is a lot of mods and user generated maps for free.
Orange Box - comes with Portal for puzzle lovers and TF2 for FPS lovers
CS:Source - still a good FPS.
COD4 - for more FPS loving.
Supreme Commandeer - more strategy gaming.

hold up TC....ure only playing at medium and u have an 8800 card (can u be more specific there?) and 2GB of ram? what, exactly, is ure AMD processor? something tells me that ure system is suffering a nasty bottleneck in the CPU. SC and, to a lesser extent, witcher are pretty CPU intensive (RPGs and strategy games tend to be).

also before writing off PC gaming, try something like HL2 on PC. give ureself time to adjust to PC and mouse in FPSs (im assuming u play ure FPSs on consoles) and see how that fits.

and if that fails get rome total war. if that doesent do it then theres no convincing u :P. actually get rome first. best strategy game ever imho.

its strange that u can only get to med details though TC...going by ure specs...somethein sounds iffy.

oh and personally i took to PC gaming like a duck to water. i remember having a PS1 and my dad bought us a PC (for homework and study of course :P). we plonked freespace into the PC. the mere intro of this game made me put my PS1 away (check out freespace into on youtube and turn the sound way up). i was simply hooked. then with all the other great PC games coming out at the time, i skipped the N64 completly and onyl got a GC and xbox lateish int their lives.

i also remember screwing up my PC a million times...good times those :D.

In contrast... here is a picture of my gaming setup. I prefer PC gaming, well over console gaming.

Wow, some real knowledge instead of the usual "I don't believe you" stuff. Thanks man. Like I said I have no reason to lie. I'm honestly trying to stay away from FPS games on PC as I have a "comfort zone" with them on 360 (more likely I'm just scared I'll get creamed due to my unfamiliarity with them on PC) but I will try Baldur's gate2 and Fallout 2 and Sins of the Solar Empire (which I thought about getting, anyway)>shsonline

listen, I don't particularly believe you either. But I will be helpful.

Anyway, play some SP FPS games on the PC. Orange Box is a must have though. Even if you have it for the 360, get it for the PC. HL2's mods alone are worth the money. And TF2 is a great game to get into the online scene with an FPS for the PC. You will die a lot anyway even if you are good so don't let dieing every 2 minutes(or less...) discourage you. Keep at it, play as easier classes(Pyro and Heavy are good for beginners with a M+KB because they aren't particularly twitch skill based, but tactical skill based). You can also get familiar with the community. Join a Steam Community Group, talk to some of them, get to know them. Many of them will also be playing other games and you can arrange to play them in those games or play with them. But yeah, PC gaming is good if you get the right games. SupCom wasn't the best to go in expecting communication(you got SupCom and not something else right? Haven't seen it refered to as SC very often but I am going to assume.)

Like I said, if you want communication in an RTS, World in Conflict is a good one because it is so team based. you may or may not get onto servers with a lot of talking immediately but there ARE a lot, so don't give up immediately on find one.

.

It's called a Tax Return. And I really didn't spend that much. The graphics card was 75 on newegg. I got the Gateway with the processor and OS for 600 through Geeks.com (refurb) and the rest I already had from my old PC.

You got an 8800 for $75? Get outta here!

hold up TC....ure only playing at medium and u have an 8800 card (can u be more specific there?) and 2GB of ram? what, exactly, is ure AMD processor? something tells me that ure system is suffering a nasty bottleneck in the CPU.

If you want good communication on PC games, then you find servers with interesting players, bookmark it, and go there often, or search for clan/clan servers ...

So much better than random kid spam I get on 360 games.

Meu2k7

no joke.. I can't play Halo 3 anymore because I can't stand hearing the n-bomb every 10 seconds... And, yes I did try other servers... 1 hour of switching matches and it was either a kid screaming or the n-bomb every 10 seconds...

I like Halo 3 MP(efinitely not my favorite though) and I don't ALWAYS get that but it is just too much...

Regardless, the fact is you can severely up the quality of your picture because I have an 8800gt as well and I can play almost anything cranked up on my 42" HDTV at 1920x1080.

Can I do that without killing my pc? i suppose I can google it but how do i do that? And yeah just so you know the last PC games I've played prior to these is Full Throttle and AOEII. So that tells you how "up to date" I am with PC gaming. Doesn't mean I'm not willing to try to get back into it though.

Does anybody else who has TRIED to get into PC gaming felt like this?

shsonline

I don't actually believe you played a pc game

Its not my job to try to convince you. You sound like a Wii supporter. Its possible to actually try something new and not like it.

There is a difference between trying some thing new, and well buying a brand new computer. So what happened exactly, were you one day playing your 360, then suddenly realize that you wanted to blow God knows how much on a new computer just to play Sup com and now your telling us Sup com isn't the game for you? Did you ever try PC gaming before you bought this expensive computer, or was this all out of the blue because I find it unlikely you decided to spend all that money with out first trying Sup com to begin with.

It's called a Tax Return. And I really didn't spend that much. The graphics card was 75 on newegg. I got the Gateway with the processor and OS for 600 through Geeks.com (refurb) and the rest I already had from my old PC.

I am with the TC because up until 7 or 8 years ago I enjoyed PC games a great deal but after a few bad experiences with the games I gave up altogether on PC games. Now I support M$ as little as possible and in time I will completely stay away from them in everything they produce.

ok that could go someway towards explaining performace issues in supreme commander. SC eats CPUs for breakfast. if uve got 4 cores, itll max em all out for ya. not so much a GPU dependant game.

it doesent really explain witcher though.

im assuming ure all patched up with ure games and OS. drivers up to date too i assume.

have u also tried witcher maxed out (at a res of 1280X1024 say) to see if it would work? witcher is not a hugely impressive game on the graphic side anyway (though it is perty imho...has a sort of oil painting look to it) but u shoudl be able to do better than med settings.

hmm...strange.

anywho try rome. ure rig should have no problem with that and its a cracker.

Either way, it doesn't matter. the specs are what i told you. what i paid and where i got it doesn't matter to the point im making. if i made an error in what i reported its only because i'm recounting my specs from memory. like i said id prove it if i could.

The fact is computer gaming has numerous advantages and several disadvantages over consoles. The main issue most people have, I think, is the keyboard and mouse setup. It is certainly an aquired taste but once one gets used to it, it is hard to game any other way.

With the aformentioned PC described by the TC, games can be cranked to the max or very close, so giving yourself time to get used to your PC setup is all that is still required.

Please do the following for us: Hit Start. Press "run". Type "dxdiag" in the popup box, and then hit enter. A window will come up. Click the "save" button at the bottom, and save the file to your desktop. Post the contents of that file on here.

You can't keep your story straight, you don't even know what you bought apperantly because there is no such thing as a realtek HD soundcard. Even a newbie isn't as bad as you are. And who buys a 8800 graphics card to play games on medium settings? You do know that's a high end graphics card right?
