It is. Half Life was basically the most revolutionary thing to happen to the shooter genre since Doom. All Halo did was popularize PC-styIe shooters on consoles, nothing more.

Not to mention that PC games are rated by harsher standards than console games and that Half Life came out in 1998 and Halo in 2001.

Halo is overall better than HL1, the standarts for the genre have risen dramatically between 98 and 2001 and playing those games today Halo is better game, despite featuring one of the worst level designs in history of the genre. Especially since it also has great MP unlike HL1

As franchises though? HL2 along with OB is better than any Halo ever made, but HL1? Nah

OK, weird. I found HL1 much more intense and exciting than HL2.

Which is why Halo 2 could only achieve a 7.0? PC standards are higher than consoles standards, because the entire library is up for comparison to a new release. At the beginning of each new generation, a console gets its standards "wiped clean" and gets to start from scratch, while new PC releases are compared to more-then-decade-old games. Its why you often see a large disparity between PC and console games (with PC scores lower) despite the PC versions being name "the definitive version" (i.e. Halo 2).

Damage control.

I don't want to post the useless console scores of Half-Life, it's a testament to the fact that a console game is held to higher standards than a console game.

SODRChief

Oh come on, Half-Life's console outings scored at the lowest an 88 (MetaCritic) which was on the PS2 edition. Half-Life 2 for the Xbox scored a 90, still not nearly as bad as the PC edition of Halo 2.

Also way to dance around the subject here that Half-Life clearly has a better average than both Halo 2 and Halo 3 (which came out nearly 3 years later). Plus I'd like to once again point out here that Half-Life and Half-Life 2 only come with a single player mode, where all the Halo's seem to rely more on their multiplayer side of things and that is really the major draw there.

Half-Life may have scored slightly lower than a game that came out 3 years after it launched, but the second installment alone out does both the Halo sequels, which I think speaks volumes in and of itself.

Spin away.

Bad try to dance around the subject. 4-0. I'm not saying Half-Life sucks. Halo is just one of the greatest games ever.

No wonder it was #2 after OoT on a "greatest ever poll" here at GameSpot (the latest, I think).

Spin away.

You aren't addressing a thing I'm putting out there, simply bringing up what you posted in your first post and calling that good. Halo is a far cry away from being even close to the top 100 greatest games of all time. Your fanboy logic proves nothing more than you're only willing to listen to yourself and anyone that agrees with your opinion, beyond that you could care less about what anyone else says and there fore you have some how convinced yourself that you are correct.

I'm done feeding trolls here, sometimes we all forget that trying to debate with a fanboy is like trying to teach simple math to a brick wall, it just won't happen.

PC games were rated by much harsher standards then, not now. You could try and argue against that, but could you honestly say that CoD4 (9.0) comes anywhere close to the quality of a game like Dues Ex (8.2)?

Halo: Combat Evolved is better than Half-Life. Some people in here are just posting the same thing, "Half-Life came out first, so its better". Some others are saying Half-Life is better because they think Halo is an overrated game, and some just think its the best game ever.

Whatever, we all have our opinions.

This is a topic about CS?

All the people started talking about CS when they couldn't put forward a good argument to my unstoppable 4-0 argument. Sorry, wasn't me.

SODRChief

Didn't I completely dismantle your supposed 4-0 argument?

As for your comments about CS not being more popular than the Halo MP....

Just to put this kindly... Counter-Strike sold 4.2 million copies RETAIL(stand-alone). Throw in the Steam purchases, and bundled sales(when it has been bundled with other games) as well as downloads when it was a mod(extremely successful as a mod, hence why it got picked up for retail distribution)....

Well, it has easily broken 6 million.

There have not been 6 million people who have played Halo 3 multiplayer... No matter how much you tell yourself that everyone who has purchased Halo 3 has played the multiplayer, it simply IS NOT TRUE. There are millions who have only played the singleplayer in Halo 3... Hell, I wouldn't be suprised if more than half of the people who bought the game completely skipped the multiplayer...

With Counter-Strike... Well, that is a completely stand-alone product... People who bought Counter-Strike played the multiplayer, because that is all there was....

So? This doesn't matter much. HL1 is vastly inferior gameplay wise compared to HL2. Of course objective criterias doesn't always translate to our feelings. For example taking a cold look at Halo3 SP absolutely murders Halo1\s one in every possible way, Halo1 feels like a sad joke compared to H3 and yet you will find plenty players who still prefer Halo 1 SP campaign

Standards for what were higher? Halo was basically the first mega console shooter on consoles for that particular generation, and garnered most of its success by being one of the only mass-market appeal games for the Xbox at the time. Half Life completely re-wrote how a first-person singleplayer shooter is played (detailed, cinematic narrative integrated into gameplay), Halo made shooters popular on consoles. Half Life is one of the highest scoring shooters on PC of all-time on Gamespot. I think only Crysis scored higher and that's because of the new rating system. If the PC didn't have such high, ever-improving standards, HL would have scored much higher. You cannot compare scores of console games to PC games due to the disparity in standards of the platforms.

I never said total players of Halo 3 MP > total CS players.

I said that more people play Halo 3's online multiplayer on 360 each day than people play any CS version's online multiplayer on a computer each day, unless, of course, you show me your god-like link to prove me wrong.

I'm pretty sure it scored lower on consoles because it was not as good as its PC counterpart, ala Half Life 2 on the Xbox. I don't "love" my PC... I'm mostly a console gamer now because I don't want to buy a brand new gaming desktop. So I settle for the 360 versions of multiplats and miss out on games like Crysis.

Halo wasn't revolutionary at all by PC standards, it only introduced FPS's to consoles.

The fact of the matter is that it borrowed heavily from Half-Life, so Half-Life in the end is more influential.

While I agree that HL1 was more inluential I would disagree about calling it revolutionary. There was nothing revolutionary about HL1, everything it had was done before, there were no real innovations there. It just took the elements from other games and put it into one amazing package so successful everyone started copying it. It happens most of the time: the most influential games are rarely truly innovative.

Such as games like Tribes, System Shock 2 and Deus Ex, all of which were out within two years of Half Life's release. All of which were also out before Halo.

I still take the Half Life series over the Halo series. I don't let scores dictate what games I enjoy more than others. Also the Half Life series along side with the Doom series and Dues Ex series is a lotinfluential than the Halo series.

SODRChief

the poll is fan driven and Halo fanboys are rabid, voting again and again for Halo.. They do this all the time....

If you want a "Greatest Games Ever" list by non-bias industry journalists, look no further than these:

http://top100.ign.com/2007/

Half-Life = #26

Half-Life 2 = #6

Halo: Combat Evolved = #32

Halo 2 = Not on the list...

http://www.gamespot.com/gamespot/features/all/greatestgames/

Half-Life is on that list...

Halo: Combat Evolve is nowhere to be found.

So 2-0 Half-Life for Greatest Game Ever Lists by actually non-biased sources

[QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]

[QUOTE="SODRChief"]Which is why HL scored lower on consoles?

Man, I know you LOVE your PC, but just accept the fact that Halo is more than "another overrated generic console FPS that scored high of low standards".

Camer999

I'm pretty sure it scored lower on consoles because it was not as good as its PC counterpart, ala Half Life 2 on the Xbox. I don't "love" my PC... I'm mostly a console gamer now because I don't want to buy a brand new gaming desktop. So I settle for the 360 versions of multiplats and miss out on games like Crysis.

It still got AAA years after it came on XBOX, when ported to PC.

It didn't score as high, but you're right. It got a 9.0 or 9.1 on PC I think. AAA on both consoles and PC, but Half-Life is only AAA on PC, and AA on consoles. Hmm...I have found the truth. They are both great games!

perfect_chao, I wouldn't say more people prefer Half-Life...

SODRChief

Of course you wouldn't. But you not saying it means nothing. The fact is, more people like Half Life. Your opinion has been noted, but Fact>opinion.

There are far more Sony fans than MS fans here.

Avian005

yeah but Sony fans have so many great games to choose from when voting. xbox fans on the other hand vote blindly for halo each time. try to understand what i mean.

Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect...Honestly, all fanboys do the same thing, don't just try to flamebait the lemmings.

come on now you really dont agree to what i am saying? check the last thread where voting took place to see for yourself.

I never said total players of Halo 3 MP > total CS players.

I said that more people play Halo 3's online multiplayer on 360 each day than people play any CS version's online multiplayer on a computer each day, unless, of course, you show me your god-like link to prove me wrong.

SODRChief

CS is a 10 year old game....

You don't think people have moved on from it over time? The fact that it STILL gets 90K+ players on any given day is amazing... Specifically given that Counter-Strike: Source fragmented the user-base...

Do you think that 10 years from now Halo 3 is even going to have 10K people playing it daily? No...

Halo wasn't revolutionary at all by PC standards, it only introduced FPS's to consoles.

The fact of the matter is that it borrowed heavily from Half-Life, so Half-Life in the end is more influential.

AdrianWerner

While I agree that HL1 was more inluential I would disagree about calling it revolutionary. There was nothing revolutionary about HL1, everything it had was done before, there were no real innovations there. It just took the elements from other games and put it into one amazing package so successful everyone started copying it. It happens most of the time: the most influential games are rarely truly innovative.

The way it tells the story with no cutscenes?

I agree that fanboys will vote for their game, not matter what. But all fanboys do that.

... Any sane person that has even remotely looked at the Half-Life game would realize why its better.. Even if you didn't even touch the singleplayer there are litterally hundreds of amazing free mods for the game for multiplayer or singleplayer.. Halo hasn't even produced anything remotely unique to what I have played mods like Natural Selection.. Such a ground breaking and interesting mod that it is now having a sequel being professionally made. Halo is pretty good, but it falls in every comparison out there, the onlyt hing I would say it has that HL does not is split screen co-op.. Notice I didn't say co-op in general because they have already made such thigns for HL for lan.

[QUOTE="SamiRDuran"] thats because xbox fans vote only for Halo. half life has a huge competition as there have been lots of legendary games on the pc platform.SamiRDuran

There are far more Sony fans than MS fans here.

Xbox 360 OWNS PS3 in games this gen, so Xbox fans have A LOT MORE GAMES to choose from.

Good try, though.

Or no. Terrible try. And weak argument.

The fact that Halo outscored Half-Life on all major sites and was above in GameSpot's last Greatest Games Ever Poll shows that if CE is not in Top 100, Half-Life is nowhere close to Top 100.

horrowhip

the poll is fan driven and Halo fanboys are rabid, voting again and again for Halo.. They do this all the time....

If you want a "Greatest Games Ever" list by non-bias industry journalists, look no further than these:

http://top100.ign.com/2007/

Half-Life = #26

Half-Life 2 = #6

Halo: Combat Evolved = #32

Halo 2 = Not on the list...

http://www.gamespot.com/gamespot/features/all/greatestgames/

Half-Life is on that list...

Halo: Combat Evolve is nowhere to be found.

So 2-0 Half-Life for Greatest Game Ever Lists by actually non-biased sources

lol, nice one so much for his scores and stuff. And not too mention even CS is on the greatest games list
