I agree the story wasn't great and it dragged on and could be boring. But poor stealth gameplay..? Lolwut?:|

From what I can recall:
From my expirience, MGS4 didn't really encourage stealth. When I first picked up the game, I was sneaking my way through the level. After a while, I decided to just go for it, and I was amazed at how easy it was to just run and gun in this game.
On the hardest difficulty you certainly can't do all that...
Can you buy ammo and weapons on the hardest difficulty? I don't remember.
Anyways, I'm sure the game requires skill and compels you to play it smart on the hardest difficulty (most games do in this difficulty btw), but I was comparing it to the others in normal difficulty.
what? Im not sure if serious...poorly written? give me an example pls. 1. Every thing is deus ex nano machines.

Its also very, very poorly written. Something that cannot be said about MGS3.

Pretty much. I think this illustration captures the ending pretty well.
Let's not forget all that melodrama and hollywood cheesiness MGS4 had: Meryl & Akiba fighting the frogs and developing a romance during the fight. and the whole Otacon crying scene.
No they just think that Peace walker was better than MGS4... No they absolutely do not. I bet if you messaged them on why MGS4 wasnt included, they would just say "Oh yeah! We forgot about that one"

MGS4's not on the list cos its the best game of all time, not just the modern era (: Better let current gen games stand a chance and win smaller award  I dare any one on SW to find a more logical reason as to why a 10/10 "best game on PS3" and "one of the greatest games of all time" and "possibly worthy of an 11/10 score" game like MGS4 could not make top100.MGS4 is not on the list because it's their best game this gen.

MGS4 ranks in my top 10 most hated games, sure I've played much worse but not one that had such production value, such hype to it, and in many ways it's even more absurd like everyone is drinking the Kool-Aid with their love of it, it wasn't even a game, like two-thirds cutscene to one-third gameplay.lamprey263
Most of the game was gameplay (its a 30 hour game), with only 12 hours of cutscenes.
Oh, come on. There's no way it's a thirty hour game.
Yes, it is a 30 hour game. 25 hours if you are a really good gamer.

The writing is awful. The cut scene where too long. Nothing was really add to the story or combat. And it's just a homage to the other games. MGS3 is better and deeper. Story wise, action wise, and combat wise. you dare comparing the plot of MGS3 with that of MGS4? clearly any fan knows MGS4 has the best plot of the saga...its awesome to see how every loose end get tied uplightleggy

Well quite. This is what happens when you don't hire an editor. And its a completely shame, MGS4 could had a tightly written, coherent narrative with believable characters.
Sadly this was not the case, and it's even sadder that the majoritiy of people think that it had a "good" writing.

The whole Liquid Ocelot thing was strange, but you have to remember Metal Gear was always rooted in sci fi/fantasy, and so common logic sometimes doesn't apply in the MGS franchise.
From what I can recall:
- Octocamo camouflages for you.
- There are two sides fighting in the field, and you can assist one of them in order to avoid being alerted by that side. If members of that side see you, they'll stop and give you some stuff. No alerts, no threats, nothing. It makes it more like a war game.
- You can buy weapons and ammo at anytime. When was the last time you could buy ammo and weapons in a stealth game? This eliminates the need for exploration and conserving ammo. In previous games, you had to explore and look for ammo and weapons. You can just spray bullets anytime you want, and not have to worry about having no ammo.
- You can easily run and gun, particularly in the first two chapters due to the war going on, and it even gives you points for killing soldiers. The backup units don't offer much of a threat, since they're pretty much the same guys you encounter on the field. In MGS2, on the other hand, the backup units wore body-armor and had shield. They were harder to take out compared to the normal ones.
- Level designs were poor and surprisingly linear in Acts 2, 4 and 5. Act 5 only had like two rooms...lol. Instead of creating levels that would enhance or encourage stealth, they just threw in a linear design with forced robot fights.
From my expirience, MGS4 didn't really encourage stealth. When I first picked up the game, I was sneaking my way through the level. After a while, I decided to just go for it, and I was amazed at how easy it was to just run and gun in this game.

On the hardest difficulty I dont believe you can buy tranqs.... thats it. It doesnt mean you dont still find them littered throughout the game.
"The Boss Extreme" difficulty in MGS4 is about the same as normal in MGS2 and 3. Its way too easy. The game offers no challenge, not even on higher difficulty levels. I guess the final fight does, but only because its a poorly made set of "fighting game" mechanics thrown at the player for no reason. Everything leading up to that though, especially in terms of stealth gameplay is a cake walk.

I wouldn't be surprised if most of you didn't even play all of the previous titles. It's hard to appreciate the game when you have no idea where it came from, and no, only playing MGS3 or Peace Walker doesn't cut it.
Any fan of the MGS series shouldn't like MGS4. It was a shambles of a game and one that disappointed a lot of MGS fans who wanted to see snake in HD. MGS3 is the best one in the series for me. Followed dangerously close by MGS1
seanmcloughlin
I actually loved MGS4, but more on the merits of its gameplay (which was also a little iffy due to the lack of a cover system). MGS3 was my favorite in story and gameplay, finding the sweet spot of story and gameplay for me.
I heard Yahtzee even enjoys the series, and he despised MGS4. But honestly, other then its really weirder and longer then normal story, MGS4 I'd say belongs on the list. Its very fun and is a wildly different game then all the schlocky US Marine FPS games out there.

This is MGS right? But lets just act that MGS4 is the only MGS game that had a heavy plot, weird crazy stuff, and dramatic plot twists. True, it may not be the only on but this is where it ended. Especially the "Brother hand possession " part.I played all the games. I know exactly why MGS4 is not the best MGS.....because they are better MGS games. MSG1 is a great intro but still had cliff-notes on it to understand it and had clunky controls. MGS2 was great with it control but was stealth heavy, too controlled with environment, and the story is way too all over the place. MGS3 is the game that balanced everything. It gave the player freedom, easy to use controls, it had a great and deep story without holding the player down with it. MGS4 modernized the series but brought back old norms the held back the story again, then add on all the craziness from the last 3 game concentrated fully in this game, and it made MGS2's overblown story look anemic. Though it lets me understand why everything happen....it had to borrow from MGS3 level headed concentration to do so.....and may I add...Big Boss>Solid snake. The craziness make MGS fun, but it can get way crazy and MGS4 is the craziest of all. Add on the fact that any new players would never understand what is going on....Which is why IGN choose Peace walker...It's crazy fun for everyone.I wouldn't be surprised if most of you didn't even play all of the previous titles. It's hard to appreciate the game when you have no idea where it came from, and no, only playing MGS3 or Peace Walker doesn't cut it.

I've played all the MGS games aside from the Acid games, and I found MGS4 disappointing.
The drebin points took away a lot from the gameplay, imo. You no longer have to explore/look for weapons and ammo or play it smartly, since you can buy weapons and ammo anytime you want. It just made the game too easy, imo. Also, it kind of lacked variety. It was pretty much push forward; MGS2, for example, had an escort mission, snipping mission, had you defuse bombs, etc. Additionally, there wasn't much gameplay; in fact, the cutscene-to-gameplay ratio was horrible. There was like five hours of gameplay opposed to nine hours of cutscenes. I know MGS is known for its cutscenes, but MGS4 went overboard with the cutscenes.
Secondly, the bosses were weak, lacked development and didn't play a role in the story. The B&B Corps were just there. You basically knew nothing about them prior to fighting them. It is until after the fights that Drebin calls and tells you their lifestory, but it's too late by then. Who cares? They're dead.
In the mission briefing in MGS1 (which was only five minutes long as opposed to MGS4's absurd hour-long briefings), the colonel would do a quick-run on the Foxhound members. You knew about their special abilities before the game started, and while doing your mission, you would encounter them on the field and get to know more about them before you fought them. Same thing with MGS2. You would get to know more about Vamp, Fortune and Fatman during your playthrough.
In one section MGS2, you are tasked to defuse bombs, and the old black man (I forgot his name) tells you about Fatman's lifestory and that the bombs placed in the big shell is not like him, etc. It shows how much Fatman has evolved into a bomb expert and whatnot. MGS3's bosses development were indirect. You basically had to call your members to know more about them.
Speaking of bosses, the boss fights were disappointing as well, imo. One of my favorite things about the MGS series is the excellent boss fights, but most of them in MGS4 weren't that great. They felt like poor copies of previous boss fights. The only ones I enjoyed were Ray v Rex and the final boss fight (though most of it has to do with nostalgia).
Also, there was a lack of easter eggs and didn't have many people on codec. MGS1 had the most amount of people on codec support, and some had some nice info to share. MGS2 has the most and best easter eggs. From what I can remember: you can take and upload pictures to Otacon and he'll sometimes make a funny comment on them, you can mess around with the hostages and the colonel will call you and be pissed, you can call the colonel while you're being pissed on, use the microphone to listen to hidden conversations, etc. As for MGS3: paramedic will inform you about food and animals (sometimes funny), Zero will talk about movies, hidden mini-game, being able to mess around with the scientists, dress up as Raikov, etc. MGS4, however, didn't have much.
Lastly, the story was horrible, imo. It was poorly paced, poorly written, relied too much on plot devices, had a lot of unnecessary scenes, laughable melodrama and hollywood cheesiness, and the answer to pretty much everything was nanomachines:
Why is Vamp the way he is? Nanomachines. Akiba? Nanomachines (or lack of). What kept Naomi from dying? Nanomachines. Liquid Ocelot? Nanomachines.
Also, I didn't care about the relationship of Meryl & Akiba, and I have no idea why they made a comic relief character be a part of the story. The fact that the series sort of ended with Akiba and Meryl getting married leaves me speechless. And the fact that Ocelot pretended to be Liquid and try to stop Snake at every opportunity in order to help Snake achieve his goal is laughable.
In Short: bosses lacked development, boss fights were disappointing, drebin points made exploration and conserving ammo needless, story was poorly written
Didn't IGN give it a 10?Senor_KamiGo to Youtube and look at the top rated comment on any IGN review and that will tell you all you need to know about this clueless company.

It has surprisingly good gameplay for an MGS game, but if you compare it to something lik Uncharted 2, it becomes pretty obvious that it's still somewhat clunky and the controls are still a bit cumbersome.
So, we take it 100% seriously, right?IGN picked Portal 2 over the original, so that should give you a good indicator of how seriously to take the list.
Gxgear
Why listen to IGN? Anyway, they had a silly one game per franchise rule, which I honestly don't get. It's my fourth favorite game of all time, of course I'd personally include it. My top 10 games of this generation are:
1. Super Mario Galaxy 2
2. MGS4
3. Mass Effect 2 (liable to change in retrospect)
4. Super Meat Boy
5. Demon's Souls
6. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
7. The World Ends With You
8. Uncharted 2
9. Braid
10. Persona 4
However, Angry Birds is a genuinely fantastic game, simplistic as it may be.
I wouldn't put MGS4 on my top 500, never mind top 100. Played it for a while and forced myself through the game just to find something that justified the scores it got, but in the end I couldn't. Hated the controls. Hated the graphics (yuck) Overall a very unsatisfying experience.racing1750You hated the graphics yet have Forza in your sig. Thats a joke since the graphics looks like last gen crap.
