I love the Halo series but lets be honest, critics and fanboys love to harp about a sequel not innovating or just outright not being better than its prequel,
But after playing Halo: Anniversary and then playing Halo 3, then playing Halo 3: ODST and then playing Halo: Reach I realized just how similar those games REALLY are.
-Walk into a narrow or open area shoot grunts and elites
-Walk into another narrow or open area and shoot more grunts and elites
-Drive a warthog
-The End
There really is no gameplay variety to speak of, Halo: Reach notwithstanding (fantastic game, single player and multiplayer) and I doubt Halo 4 is going to innovate on anything nor is it going to be better than Halo: Reach. Halo: Anniversary proved that 343 Industries are simply not Bungie, corridors all had a similar look, glitches that caused the game to freeze, awkward checkpoints. Bungie clearly knew what they were doing when they made Halo: Reach
Halo has no gameplay variety? Theres a slew of weapons and vehicles to use and the armor abilities further diversifies the combat. If Halo's gameplay lacks variety then practically the whole genre is lacking in variety by comparison. Halo is Halo, the series has made innovation, but it's not really in need of a reinvention, although I'd argue Reach almost did. And I don't think Anniversary is a good game to judge 343 when you consider that the campaign portion of the game was developed by Saber and the multiplayer portion was from Certain Affinity.
You're referring to Halo: Reach...there are no armor abilities in Halo 3 and Halo 4 will be a direct sequel to Halo 3 not Reach. Reach actually spiced up the gameplay and the self-contained story was IMO better than the numbered Halo's. The numbered Halos pretty much lack gameplay variety, like I said, shoot grunts, shoot elites, shoot grunts, shoot more elites, shoot a couple hunters, and shoot a couple thousand jackals....rinse repeat till end. Its still fun but its getting tired, especially after I played Anniversary
You're mistaken, Halo: Anniversary was developed by 343 Industries, and the engine was developed by Saber Interactive, and the multiplayer maps were developed by Certain Affinity and 343 Industries. If that is their best effort at their introduction to the Halo series after Bungie then they are clearly not in the same league as Bungie

I wonder how many fanboys would even mention the written review if he gave it AAA, it's sad.tomarlynI also wonder how many people would claim he was blinded by nostalgia for giving it a higher score. Seems like the only scores that are "objective" are the low ones.
Though I may disagree with him I still respect his opinions. For example, the Infamous 2 review. I thought that his critisims of the game were way too harsh. However, it didn't stop me from playing the game and got over it.

This is what i've been saying for awhile now

Tom McShea fell into the gigantic void of reviewer irrelevence after his Infamous 2 review. The only credible reviewers for me are Kevin Van Ord, Chris Watters, Carolyn Petit, and the Giant Bomb crew.

Halo 3 came out in 2007. Skyward Sword in 2011. Glad to see the standards in gaming haven't changed since then...And sheep wonder why people don't like them very much and hope their games flop. I'm not talking about poll results, I'm talking about actual community in sw. Most people hare are anti-cow, and seem to own multiple systems(while hating the ps3/psp more often). I might respect his opinion if he gives Halo 4 a 7.5.

It's easy to hate on a series you have never played.
Halo 4 isn't even out yet and people have already made their mind up about it! And that's exactly the problem with Skyward Sword.
And before anyone calls me a Halo fanboy, I've never played through them, I don't like the mechanics but they're undoubtedly good games.

360 fanboys are the majority here. PS3 comes second. These two groups then pick on the 320x240 Wii fanboys. Then there's the pc crowd, who either side with the wii and ps3...for exclusives.
All reviews are unique in their bias, in their attitudes...etc they should be treated as such but too often people treat it as peice meal if you like this reviewer then you must love all his reviews if you hate him you must hate all his reviews.
But at this time there is no way to defend McSheas review he has freely admited to playing the game wrong when it came to the bow *even though the tutorial is fully represented* so who knows what else he played wrong. A professional reviewer shouldn't post a review based upon him playing a game wrong and then ignore when its called to be rereviewed....but then again gamespot has no professionals working in its offices.

I agree, and very well put btw. ...Except for maybe the last sentence. It is hard to say all, but there are some really flawed reviews on this site. Aren't there a portion of people that pay this very site? I think if that is the case, games should be reviewed by two different people, and an average should be reached. Sort of like "two thumbs up, two thumbs down."
Thank God someone else noticed that. I thought I was going crazy.[QUOTE="DarkLink77"][QUOTE="Stevo_the_gamer"]What fantasy land did I just enter.Heirren

There's like 6 legit lemmings on this forum. How are they the majority?Didn't play the game, but Zelda games are not bad but are extremely overrated, since the early Snes titles. and what's the big deal of a 7.5? Its almost 8.. and its his opinion. Whoever is upset with this, get a life.26whitewolfI'm upset with the rapid decline of reviewers. Relate it to the other games. The score is bizarre. The review itself was ok though focussing on all things possible to nag about, like most nintendo reviews. Like there is a contest to see what is wrong with nintendo. It has to be innovative and good looking, and great sounding and have a good story, and good controls, and be bugfree and have perfect balance, and voice acting, etc. With other games all that stuff doesn't matters that much as long as it's fun (COD).

Nobody should be upset about any of it. Especially not the score. The thing is there are aspects of the review that are factually wrong. That is the big issue here. Nothing is wrong with the guys opinion, but when you are paid to review games and IT IS YOUR JOB TO WRITE AN ACCURATE AND PROFESSIONAL REVIEW you should not falsify information to justify your dislike for a game.

There's far too many people on this site that have blind devotion to MS. A lot of ps3 fanboys get labelled as such, but in reality are NOT fanboys. People call me a fanboy all the time and I'm not.

Let's all admit that there is no way that SS should have been given a 10. In that case there are a lot of reviews out there that are much worse than Tom's, since they are willfully ignorant of the game's many flaws. Seriously like Tom ponted out in that pod cast a lot of those reviews have blatently false information that was regurgitated from Reggie's E3 speech.
vashkey
so tom is the only reviewer that was right? since you know 90& of reviewers gave this game a 90 or above?
He doesn't necessarily have to be wrong just because his score doesn't conform to the average. It's the ad populum fallacy. I can't count how many times I've seen people do this for SS, it's ridiculous. Justin Bieber's music is extremely popular, hence it's so.
