Because it looks pretty? That's it? :|
I recall Doom 3 looking pretty as well.
Why do people forget about Far Cry.... Seriously. The gameplay is there you just don't want to see it. Also, notice how he said contender.
I haven't forgotten about Far Cry at all, I simply didn't like that game. And I doubt people had forgotten Doom 2 while hyping Doom 3..
Might as well call Lair and Heavenly Sword GOTY contenders as well..because they look good.
I'd personally like to see more on how the gameplay turns out before jumping onto any conclusions. I'm also more than convinced that the vast majority hype and pass judgement on this game based on the visuals alone.

The thing was, Far Cry >>> Doom 2 in terms of gameplay IMO. Yet again you fail to see the gameplay cause you don't want to. Watching the videos I can see that its open-ended (a plus), customizable (a plus), has excellent gunplay(a plus), interactive( a plus), and realistic(a plus). Environments reacting and feeling real means that tactics are needed, the gunplay mechanics look solid, and the ability to approach everything in tons of ways is great. Sorry, but the gameplay is there. If you didn't like Far Cry then your opinion doesn't matter cause you don't like this type of game anyway.
Oh right, I thought you was taking about ingame :D.Anyways yea I agree its lame, but they are obviously tryin to create an image with the suit , like how Master Chief is plastered on the front aswell ... cheesy but it works :o
Meu2k7
Speaking of in-game there are no cutscenes. How the hell is your gif possible then? Is that a squad mate in front of Jack Dunn, with the gif omitting the gun etc?
And yeah I'm glad the Master Chief isn't trying to be cool for 12 year olds this time around (advertisement wise). I think he's going all Emo with Cortana going rampant and all.

Far Cry better than Doom 2 in terms of gameplay is more or less a no-brainer since Far Cry was released quite a few generations afterwards don't you think?
Far Cry did have solid gameplay, but there were other things that IMO that could had been executed much better. The game often felt like a tech-demo with a predictable and rather cliché story tacked on. I'm hoping, and heck, I'm thinking that Crysis won't repeat these flaws which obviously weren't much harm to some, but it did a lot of harm on my viewpoint towards the game. But the fact remains, the vast majority do hype Cryis based on the visuals alone which was the major point of my post.
Nowhere in the original post is there any indication of anything that would lead to a gameplay-related discussion. The focus is the visuals which in turn would naturally result in visual-related posts whereas 'GOTY Contender Confirmed' to me seemed like something bursted out of control simply based on the beauty of the game.
I hope you catch my drift. It's not an attempt to attack the game, I'm actually hoping for the best for it since I'll be one of those who will probably purchase it. I'm aware it will have solid gameplay, I just wish that most (Note: most, not all) who are hyping it wouldn't put so much emphasis on the visuals alone, that is all.

Hmmm I never said there wasnt cutscenes :P , there is, but from what I can see its still in first person (I guess that guy in my sig is a squad mate) but we cant be sure yet I guess.
[QUOTE="skrat_01"]Ya im a fan of Giger's works aswell. I have one Necromicon book, AR+ Giger book, and another Tachen Icons one of him. Yea his Biomechanics works are amazing, and has defitnaly got some weird sexual stuff going on in his works, hell some of his sex sketches are beyond crazy. Im quite the fan of his occult imagery aswell as his use of symbolism, and his depiction of his dreams / nightmare visions as you said - very very interesting and intrueging stuff. His other works like Birthmachine and Li I + Li II are also amazing........ Ya Giger, Munch, Goya, Bacon, Chapman Bros. all freaking awesome artists, with very compelling visual imagery. And I second you there, in that its an R movie, thank god its a gory - the way it should be lol. Hell the acid blood melting on the guys face looked awesome. And yea the story wont be much methiniks - but oh well what can you do.
And yea I agree with you again, there should be an Alien 5 - that should go back to its roots - or hell like Aliens. Alien 3 and Alien 4 were very underwhelming.....
As for aliens infesting the earth - that would be very cool - I remember reading an Aliens comic of the earth being overrun by aliens - which was flipping awesome, but I have a feeling that in AVP the heroes save the earth from the alien menace in another crazy way, ending with an explosion + alien queen :P - Yea even if it doesent link with any other alien / pred movie.
Actually that was cool in AVP1 how Weyland (didnt spell it right methinks) Corp. was in it, as well as Bishop / Mr. Weyland was leading the exhibition methinks!
FrozenLiquid
Lol don't know the other names you mentioned. I'll check them out, but I always heard you don't buy paintings because of who is drawing, but rather what is drawn/painted, regardless of the artist. I only know of Giger coz of Species and Alien so yeah...
I didn't mind the action packed Aliens, but a wouldn't mind a psychological scare like Alien 1. Put it in a Bioshock like environment -- a dead colony which the protagonists dont know who or what caused it. Then go for the action packed Aliens on Earth! Haha!
Yeah the link in AvP was cool. I forgot, did Bishop die?
Haha yea try telling the galleries that the names dont count lol, its like a brand name :P But I yea I defitnaly agree with you there. Ah well those artists are awesome, though yea I certainly rather Giger over the bunch.Hell yea sounds good! Ah I really enjoyed Aliens, even though it was completely different to the claustraphobic shock fest that was Alien. Hell if you liked Alien or Aliens I HIGHLY recommend The Thing, an AWESOME shock fest horror flick.
And ya Bishop died in AVP - he tries to burn a predator with his torch + resperator. The predator stabs him in the guts lol.

Yeah I understand but my point by saying Far Cry >>> Doom 2 in terms of gameplay was to show that keeping Far Cry's gameplay is not a bad thing. Doom 3 didn't really changemuch from Doom 2 in terms of gameplay, both were corridor shooters and Doom 3 was about 3 years too late. The industry had advanced. Far Cry however, has the type of gameplay that is still being refined and advanced. Crysis will do just that and will deserve a 9.0 in Gameplay because of it. As for the story, well Crytek hired profession screenwriters(movie writers)to improve upon their ideas and concepts. The latest gameplay video from GC that ended in the cutscene of sorts(still in first person view) shows that the story is pretty good. Maybe a little cliche but they look to be pulling it off well. Finally, yes people do hype the game because of visuals but a good number of us know that it goes past the visuals. It IS a GotY contender IMO.

In all honesty, you're right; especially on the Doom 2/Doom 3 contrast; I went out of line there.
However, I'm not saying that Crysis is not a GOTY contender because IMO as well, it most definately is. What I'm saying is that it doesn't seem to be hyped a GOTY for the right reasons. Most (again most, not all) see the visuals which in turn blinds them to see anything else.
There's too little mention of gameplay, what new the game brings to the table to eventually set a new standard among FPS games, the story, the characters, the whole universe of the game etc. etc.. I just wish that more hype was put on those factors because we ALL know that the game looks absolutely astounding, I just wish that more people would ask themselves "Alright, what can be found beneath the surface?". That isn't too much of a request, or is it? :P
Also, this applies for more or less the vast majoriy of games, not just Crysis. But Crysis is currently the most visually stunning game on the horizon, thus making it the prime example.

No it(only focusing on the Graphics isn't right.)isn't but the thing is most consolites don't want to acknowledge the gameplay cause it means that this game could be one of the best games ever (not saying it will, but it has a chance if it pulls it off perfectly), so hermits have given up trying to try and force that point.

With threads like these guys, please don't go around saying "Oh, we like Crysis for more than just graphics".
It takes another game and its features for Crysis' features to be talked about in that department. Unprovoked, it's all about how pretty it looks.
Nevertheless, it does look pretty. Just doesn't make my jaw drop. Nothing will ever do that to me if it's just technical greatness, I'm afraid.
FrozenLiquid
What? Did you read the thread title? It's just showing an example of how games change and get better over the course of their development. You act like no one on SW ever makes threads about the graphics of other games. Hell, half the threads in SW are about graphics. Look at all the threads about Halo 3's graphics. Remember that one screenshot of Halo 3 (which was only in-game and not even in first person) that got about 500 threads made just for it? Only the naive and ignorant hype this game for its graphics. Anyone whose read a lot about it and has been following it know that it's much, much more than just "teH GraPhiX Lawlz!".

Why do you say it's ONLY technically impressive:roll:
Because it's striving for ultra realism. It doesn't go for a distinctive art style.
I like the art stlye of Crysis.....First a beautiful paradise island, then a beautiful frozen tropical island, and then a alien spaceship. What else can you ask for.
And Realism and Distinctive Art style aren't mutually exclusive.
Sounds cliche (klee-shayd). --Did I spell that right? Late Hours-
Yes, because soooooooo many other FPS's have taken place in a frozen jungle and zero-g enviroment. I can name 5 off the top of my head! Ummmm........uhhhhh......oh......wait.....I can't. My bad.

Not to rain on anyones parade, but simply making everything look like the real world just doesn't impress me anymore.
I'm sure Crysis will be great, but as for being blown away by its graphical prowess, that really takes a backseat to giving a game artistic merit.

It is beautiful, but you can pretty much say "It will look better if it's even more realistic".
With Bioshock for example, you could say it could look more realistic for all it wants, but without it's art direction, it wouldn't be as great looking.

Well, we all hate one another :P (there is an extremely bloody history between us, to say the least)Other than that, the cultures are different. The landscapes are different (wales and Scotland have more of a hilly landscape and England is relatively flat in comparison), the welsh have their own language, there are plenty of things that differ between the countries. The people usually differ too, different sense of humour (and different taste in beers :) *I personally hate Guinness*).
There is certainly a lot more difference that meets the eye.

I hope. I think what's going to separate this game from being GOTY over just another amazing game is the story, how it unfolds, and how it's told. If they pull it off, it's going to give it that little extra which will make the game that much better.

Lol, Americans and Canadians, New Zealanders and Aussies, Welsh, Scots and Englishmen.... there are interesting relationships between neighbours lol.
Only been to England, but not to Wales or Scotland yet. That'll be on my next trip to Europe.
[QUOTE="FrozenLiquid"][QUOTE="trix5817"]Crytek recently stated that their will be a few cutscenes, but they are all in first person. There's a video of the first level that came out a couple days ago that has a cutscene in it. It's actually very well done IMO. The majority of the story unfolds as you play though.

Oh okay. Wonder if they'll be interactive (moving your view around).
I hope. I think what's going to separate this game from being GOTY over just another amazing game is the story, how it unfolds, and how it's told. If they pull it off, it's going to give it that little extra which will make the game that much better.
But it sounds like a mix of the traditional cutscene in almost any game today and the first person immersion of Half Life 2 right?
[QUOTE="Meu2k7"][QUOTE="FrozenLiquid"][QUOTE="Meu2k7"]:evil: Yes , lol!

Kewl.
Excuse my ignorance, but what separates the Welsh from the English and Scottish?
Ah not much, like New Zealand our sheep population is rather .. high ..., and the accent. Oh and our own langauge (Well fallen deeply into the minority).
Contrary to what skrat or any other Australian might say, we don't screw sheep lol.
Actually, there was a police scandal which involved a bestiality videowith sheep, but he's in the minority. Actually, I hope he's unique

The people usually differ too, different sense of humour (and different taste in beers :) *I personally hate Guinness, if it's not in a steak pie of course :)*).

The worse thing is, I have yet to visit the U.S. Although I have been to many places in Europe, Switzerland (the alps and bern), Germany (Berlin) (how did they beat us 2-1 in football again :?), France (Paris) and Spain (Barcelona). The worse thing is, I have yet to visit the U.S. Although I have been to many places in Europe, Switzerland (the alps and bern), Germany (Berlin) (how did they beat us 2-1 in football again :?), France (Paris) and Spain (Barcelona). gingerdivid
Thoughts on Paris?
From an outsider, I thought it was the most beautiful city I've ever been to.
My British friends however thought the place was a sh*thole. Could be their deep resentment for everything French but yeah, they didn't like it.
They said Rome was better. And Rome...... Rome....

Thats what they all say.
Theres a reason we don't let New Zealanders leave the major cities.
Lol riiiiiighhhtt....
You guys took Russell Crowe and some of our other celebrities, and in exchange we take all those gorgeous Aussie women which is why you don't want us to leave our cities
Yeah Gladiator was ten varieties of awesome.
And you guys can take sloppy seconds from us Aussies if you like :P.
In all seriousness though, NZ is a gorgeous country. Skiing up there is phenominal.
