Na, every hermit in the world can run any game on max setting no problem.

I've had 24 gigs for a while now and I'm not even a hermit.

Yeah? So, it's unified, I guess it would be fair to add the GPU memory to the amount in the OP. Would that exceed 8 GB?

Delusion at its finest. Let them have their 15 minutes of fun guys. It'll all be over once its released and they find out 8 cores running at 1.6ghz and this "new" GDDR5 technology isn't the greatest thing in the world

I have 4GB of DDR3 ram and 1GB of GDDR5. But I built my computer when ram cost like 3-4 times as much as it does now.

And the average gaming PC is a Celeron 300 Mhz with ATi Rage 3D, 4x CD-ROM, Windows 98 SE, 32 MB RAM and 4 GB HDD, lolz...

1. It's optional (which is a good thing, you can get as much RAM as you need).
2. RAM isn't everything.
3. 4gb is enough to play a lot of games on max given that you've got a good GPU/CPU set up.

The PS4 will struggle to keep up with the xbox, and both will be outdated a year after release conpared to PC.

Well yeah, but isnt that the same as having GDDR5 in my GPU?  Really, I'm no computer wiz, but thought it was a similar deal.  And gddr5 has been on gpus for years.

I don't see the point of this. Also, That's system RAM. You do know that does not include the VRAM in video cards, right? 

Will the PS4's GPU even be capable of taking advantage of such a large amount of VRAM? What resolution will the typical PS4 game run at?PernicioEnigma

Not every pc gamer has steam and not every user does a specs report.

The PS4 memory will serve to compensate for the unified design (sharing with CPU & GPU) and serve the low-power nature of its processor rather than to push the boundaries of gaming graphics. It's very stupid to compare GDDR5 to PC RAM when they have a dedicated graphics card with it's own onboard memory

Seems you both missed the point.

I never questioned that the best PCs will be better than consoles. But they are just a small fraction of all PCs. Expecting developers to properly utilize the hardware for just a fraction of a platform's users, is naive. Especially now that devs are constantly complaining about costs.

And make no mistake, consoles are now powerful enough not to miss basic functions like AA or AF.

Here are the facts:

• Computing power has diminishing returns in graphics quality;
• Only a fraction of PCs will be more powerful than next gen consoles (at least for a while);
• Costs of development will increase;

So, utilizing that extra power will cost more, have less of an effect compared to this gen, and to top it all, it will only be available to a limited number of people, who have spent enough to build a PC, considerably more powerful than a next gen console.
