[QUOTE="SecretPolice"] Curious, do you find it appalling that Sony has a monopoly on B.R. and should that evil be remedied so MS & "N" can share & share alike? :twisted:SecretPolice

Sony Has a monopoly on Blu-ray? Really? http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Blue-ray+player&x=0&y=0

I know it's not really a monopoly but just making a point. Can MS just go ahead and produce a B.R. 360 without licence to do so and does Sony get $$$$ if or when MS would go B.R. ? In other words, can't they just pirate it ya know, like what people are trying really hard in this thread to excuse ?

No, No, and no. I believe there's a blu-ray board of sorts. So MS would have to go through them and get a license and sony wouldn't get residuals. Unless they used sony's model. Or I could be completely wrong/.

You're definitely twisting my words. I'm not trying to excuse pirating I'm trying to say that M$ preventing other memory manufacturers have nothing to do with pirates but is a move to monopolize the hardware accesory market for their console much like they do with Windows and software. In a while M$ will be the only one in the picture.

If so then it's unintentional I assure you but TBH it really peeves me when someone acts as though MS is so evil and Sony ( or any other big corp ) is so virtuous. It's just not so. :?

Anyone who uses a regular HDD instead of the overpriced 100$ HDD's microsoft wants to milk you with is a likely target for theyr wrath.

ZIMdoom

It's funny that overpriced items isn't robbery itself.

Hey, I hate MS and am no fan of the Xbox. You can check my post history to see for yourself. But I support MS's right to do this. Yes, the HDD is a rip off and MS making a money grab.I've openly mocked them for years regarding their idiotic decision to NOT make HDD standardafterthey mockedSony and Nintedo about standard HDD being the future of gaming and an absolute necessity. I've openlymocked them for insisting to the public HDD would be standard in the 360 when, behind the scenes, they were telling developers the exact opposite.MS has ripped off their cusomters with this HDD decision. But you know what, if customers don't like it and wanted the ability to replace the HDD theirself, then they should have bought the PS3 instead. They bought the Xbox and whether they like the peripherals or not, they violated their terms of use and have no right to now turn around and cry about it.

Like it or not, MS is fully within their rights here.

Bravo. See people, you can not like Microsoft but retain your common sense. It isn't all that hard.

You do not have a right, no matter how much you dislike a company, to violate a contract that you agreed to. If you are disgusted by Microsoft then you shouldn't do business with them.

Well Monopolizing a business is pretty bad, for everyone. It's not that MS is evil, it's just bad business. I mean what next? I'll be only able to use MS batteries for the next xbox console? I mean ya you can lock out an External unauthorized HD, but a 360 memory unit? Something 1,000s of people have probably bought?

All consumers I think can agree monopolies are not good for us but really, the point of this thread is getting side tracked me thinks as MS is fully in their rights to ban users for violating the TOU don't ya think ?

I think the term monopolizing is a bit strong here. Yes, it sucks that MS is locking out 3rd party manufacturers from there system, but there are two other console manufacturers to make stuff for. It's funny how Apple is so very successful at doing the same thing for as long as I remember, but that word is never associated with them. It's pretty much why It pisses me off when I hear people complain about Microsoft so much and are completely silent about Apple. I happen to think they are far worse than Microsoft. They just aren't as big.

so many people misinformed on this thread:

1. You dont get banned for having a custom hard drive. Yes they have made it so you cant use Datel drives anymore but NO WAY are you getting banned for having it.

2. The only people being banned are who modified their dvd firmware. And the only reason to do that is to pirate games. Period. There is no grey area for this at all. They figured out a way to detect people who have their dvd firmware modified.

This. Do you see THIS, fanboys? That's called reason and logic!! And you too can enjoy the benfits such perspective once you take off your tinfoil caps :)

lol thanks i try. and the only reason MS isnt allowing Datel drives to work on their systems cause they are UNLICENSCED accessories. if MS allowed this, why would companies like Madcatz pay licensing fees then. Datel never tried to work with MS they just released unauthorized accessories.

lol, selective reading FTL?? From your own link -

"Even with the Microsoft's recent XBL 'ban hammer' crackdown on pirates (or non pirates), sales are still roaring ahead of the PS3 according to leading discount website"

This suggest that the banning was predicted to have a NEGATIVE impact on sales, but the console is selling anyway.

I saw this same news on other sources is just that this blogger was the one I had at hand when I was making the post. Ehh even if they were B& 1 by 1 those who went and bought another 360 around this time would have probaly done so either way and MS would have profited regardless.

I wouldn't be surprised if MS did in fact pull this up with that intention though but then again it's not like they don't have a right do this to pirates.

lol, youre back peddling on me man lol. If you question a blogger/news site/information site's credibility, you dont post links to them. You posted that because you viewed it as a negative towards the 360/microsoft, when you have no proof that this is a profitable venture other than your fanboy speculation. Fact is, MS and Sony make the VAST MAJORITY of their revenue from software sales, and online revenue. Banning these consoles cuts off any online revenue that may have had..............even on modded consoles. Modded consoles can still play legit games, and modded games. MS simply cut of xbox live. How can that be a positive? Even if you are right, lets say that the million that was banned go out and buy another console............whose to say they wont mod the thing again, and continue to get modded games for 10 bucks? You (and other cows) are speculating and spinning this too much, and avoiding common sense............sad really

[QUOTE="Doctor-McNinja"][QUOTE="KungfuKitten"] Replacing the HDD already results in a ban? Who would want such a rule? That is ridiculous.

RedruM_I

This is untrue, and an awful lot of people who got banned are suddenly claiming this is all they did. You cannot just 'replace' the HDD. It's a proprietary device made just for the 360. In order to use another one, you need to make significant modifications to the console. And once again, an awful lot of these modded HDDs have terabites of storage for storing.... guess what? Pirated games. If someone did genuinely go to all the trouble of modding their 360 just so they could use their own HDD, i guess that sucks for them. But if they're savvy enough to do that they must surely be aware of the fact that you're not supposed to do it. After all, xbox live does remind you plenty of times that any mods to the console at all = xbox live ban. It's only fair.

Maybe they just wanted to buy cheaper HDs for their console. I've heard several people who went to great lenghts to modify their 360s in order to avoid RROD. How is that different? The truth is that this is a typical Micro$oft move and nobody should be surprised.

What are you talking about? They violated the agreement end of story. They should get punished and that is a ban. If they can't accept then they shouldn't have messed around with their 360's in the first place.

[QUOTE="HuusAsking"][QUOTE="navyguy21"]Because even if you encrypt them, hackers will still find a way if they have free access to the HDD like they would with 3rd party hard drives. I know its not easy to break, but opening the door just a little bit allows at least some hackers/pirates in. MS learned that the hard way last gen by using a standard PC hard drive, and the console was hacked to death, allowing people to upgrade, and even install retail games. So they closed the door this gen. I dont agree with it, but i fully understand it.RedruM_I

So how do Steam and other PC-centric systems (which have no choice but to use open hardware) keep hacking and cracking under control? And why can't Microsoft use a similar or tighter model?

Exactly, this is just another way for M$ to promote their monopolistic activities and make EVERYTHING their property. Luckily they are now being sued, I hope they lose.

The situation isn't the same. STEAM and such like don't own the PC. Microsoft own the Xbox. They do a good job in keeping thing undercontrol, as they have no choice but to keep things on there end.

MS on the other hand can simple disable your console functions. And they're within right i believe.

You may think it's not fair, and that MS are just looking to make money, but who cares what you think? They're pirates ...

SecretPolice

I'm not defending pirates but they locking foreign memory hardware is a sign of things o come (the link was from a lawsuit of a hardware company not the pirates lawsuit). They can do whatever they want but it is the same kind of practices they do on the computer business and that hint at a monopoly. I'm pretty sure that for them locking access of third party memory units is not a move they are interested to promote to defeat pirates (the other companies don't do such things and they have other means to deal with pirates) but they do it to monopolize with their proprietary stuff. The exact same kind of BS they do on the computer world.

Curious, do you find it appalling that Sony has a monopoly on B.R. and should that evil be remedied so MS & "N" can share & share alike?

They don't. They can simply buy a drive from Samsung or LG.

Are PS3 fans really taking the fact that MS is sticking it to pirates as a negitive against them? Siding wih pirates because MS is getting at them? Oh this rich lol.

The__Havoc

You do realize that by automatically assuming that criticism MUSt be from PS3 fans...that makes YOU the fanboy, right? The people who are angry the most are the Xbox fans who don't want to be ripped off buying over-priced peripherals. The people suing are the million, or so, Xbox users who were banned and feel that ban went way to far when it went beyond their XBL account and affected their HDD capabilities.

By reading all this news and automatically jumping to the conclusion of "any MS criticism can only come from MS haters" is the REAL fanboy behaviour here.

[QUOTE="Animal-Mother"] Sony Has a monopoly on Blu-ray? Really? http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Blue-ray+player&x=0&y=0

Animal-Mother

I know it's not really a monopoly but just making a point. Can MS just go ahead and produce a B.R. 360 without licence to do so and does Sony get $$$$ if or when MS would go B.R. ? In other words, can't they just pirate it ya know, like what people are trying really hard in this thread to excuse ?

No, No, and no. I believe there's a blu-ray board of sorts. So MS would have to go through them and get a license and sony wouldn't get residuals. Unless they used sony's model. Or I could be completely wrong/.

Or they can simply get the drive itself from a company that's already a member, such as Samsung or LG. They've already paid the associated fees, and if they want to pass the cost to Microsoft, well, that's up to them.

Maybe you should read the articles, and complaints before you respond to someone. The only people who were banned here are people who modded their consoles, not people who used other hard drives.

[QUOTE="Animal-Mother"][QUOTE="SecretPolice"]If so then it's unintentional I assure you but TBH it really peeves me when someone acts as though MS is so evil and Sony ( or any other big corp ) is so virtuous. It's just not so. :?

SecretPolice

Well Monopolizing a business is pretty bad, for everyone. It's not that MS is evil, it's just bad business. I mean what next? I'll be only able to use MS batteries for the next xbox console? I mean ya you can lock out an External unauthorized HD, but a 360 memory unit? Something 1,000s of people have probably bought?

All consumers I think can agree monopolies are not good for us but really, the point of this thread is getting side tracked me thinks as MS is fully in their rights to ban users for violating the TOU don't ya think ?

But the thing is, what if the TOU is illegal. You can't use a TOU to make illegal things legal. If the TOU has an anti-trust issue (such as denying the use of third-party peripherals--and complete HD kits and memory units can't be hacked, so that's not a legal reason), then it can be challenged in court, and the judge can force the TOU to be amended to remove the anti-trust issue. Some of the heat Microsoft is getting comes from allegation of anti-trust, which by law they are within their rights to complain about.

That's because third parties can still make accessories for the iPod series. Look for devices from the likes of ****** and so on. The iPod itself belongs to Apple, but outside that is a much different story.

[QUOTE="shadow_hosi"]they got what they deserved modding a console is asking to get the ban hammer nomatter what the reason you mod it for any modification violates the EULA and they can have their way with your console at that point so QQ TC you deserved it just like everyone else

So what if you get banned for doing nothing more than using a proper third-party peripheral (and moreso if it's a MS-certified third-party peripheral)? That's the story behind the Datel lawsuit.

There are 3rd party accessories for the 360 too.Why does no one know this? This just affects 3rd party devices that can be used to pirate games.

Automatically assuming? Sorry but I've read through the entire thread. People complaining about MS wanting money, MS being greedy, MS this MS that with PSN Tags in their sigs thus them being PS3 fans. I did not make any mention of PS3 fanboys as I do not know everyone here but a person here with a PSN tag is a fan of the PS3. So automatically assume? No that was your error do not speculate.

The people who are angry the most are xbox fans? Yeah okay. First off anyone who pirates a 360 is not a fan of microsoft. You're a fan of what you support not from what you steal off of.

I have no remorse for people that modify their systems outside of the perameters. Their own stupidty. You want to mess around with a system then get a PC.

All I see is a bunch of people acting like its something bad for MS to be sticking it to pirates. Man if that's bad Sony must be terrible for being responsible for closing down one of my favorite gaming online retailers in Lik-Sang

Microsoft doesn't gain any money from this. Hackers can just buy a new 360, and then pirate games again. MS gains money from Software purchases, not hardware purchases. What a joke, pirates need to grow up, and get a life.

MS has been making a profit per console sold for almost a year now. And if hackers buy another console and mod it again, they will just get banned again. If that have that much money to spend, that they can just keep buying a new console over and over again...why not just buy original games in the first place?

People stealing games get what they deserve, if i was MS the punishment would be much worse. I would brick all the 360s and make them buy new ones. These games cost alot of money to make and not supporting the developers is not right.

Yeah I'm being a fanboy for laughing at these stupid pirates and the spin control that some Sony fans here are using to make MS look bad for putting the clamps on the pirates. If you ask me its not good enough. MS should sue the pirates and take legal action. Teach their sorry ***** a lesson. You are still right that I am a fanboy? Of what? Because I don't run around and parade of the silly ideals of supporting one platform in the fight to convince others its better then another? Don't lump me with your silly console war. I merely specate here and laugh at people like you poking around your accusations lol. Tell me. What systems do I own oh so omnipotent one that knows such about me lol?

I'm a fanboy because I point out the actions of PS3 fans on the board yeah okay. Lets not act so sensitive to me pointing out what the PS3 fans do here just because you are one as well.
