[QUOTE="karasill"]True, but I don't think anyone gets it. If Microsoft didn't exist, another company would have stepped up to the plate and taken charge. Who's to say Apple or Linux wouldn't have implemented some sort of Open GL or other graphics standard if they were given the chance to? The reason they don't now is becaue Microsoft and DirectX is too big to compete with.Makari
Nobody did it for a decade and a half of PC gaming. Apple had the chance, tried their way, and blew it rather hard. Their style of business is not exactly conducive to PC gaming. Just look at all the mess with people trying to get their own apps on the iPhones, heh.

Did we forget Linux? :P What could they have done if given the chance?

How is PC gaming casual when most of its games have dumbed down versions/sequals on consoles? Can you prove my and others how PC gaming can possible be more casual then consoles?

PC's best sales are for WoW and Sims 2 expansions. The PC version of multiplats are the dumbed down because they are simply quick ports of the console version, the consoles are the lead platforms now and is where the money is made for gaming.

Annnnd companies like nVidia, Intel, AMD, and ATI as well as other hardware companies would have made more and better stuff on the mac then what we're currently seeing. Apple/Linux would have been MUCH bigger companies if it wasn't for Microsoft.

You assume Apple would be the same company as it is today if Microsoft didn't exist. They would have realized the market of games, and I'm sure with the help of Apple, devs would have made gaming work just fine.

okay let me ask you something then. if games can run perfectly on apple/ linux. then why arent many developers making games for apple/linux as they are for windows?

Apple would be out of business without Microsoft, in case you're forgetting about the bail-out in the mid/late-90's. All of these hardware companies WERE making more and better things on the PC side, and Apple resisted using the "better tech" while insisting their IBM PPC processors were better for.. yeah, a decade. This is why I'm saying Apple's style of business isn't conducive to gaming. The better things were out there, and they resisted using it simply because it wasn't 'their' way that 'they' had chosen.

If they put it in the game you have to use it. It's not like Gamespy Arcade, which is offered as an optional install, it's integrated into the game.

Because Microsoft came out with this thing called DirectX a looong time ago which made game development and implementation easier. After that, devs flocked to microsoft. But before that, there were an equal amount of games on both the PC and macs before DirectX. If microsoft didn't exist, devs would still be making games on the mac. I'm sure Apple would have came up with something similar to DirectX and everything would have been okay for the devs.

What about crysis, the witcher, and stalker. All those games sold at least a milllion world wide. And the reason why WoW is doing so well is because it follows the same reason why every other blizzard game sold so well, low system requirments. Diablo 1 and 2, starcraft, and warcraft(before WoW) all sold 4 million and at least with starctaft nearing 9 million. And if consoles were the lead platform how do you explain, LoTR:battle for middle earth and C&C3 all have reduced unit caps and sold worse on consoles compared to the PC versions.

M$ really didn't start electronic games, there were a few long before M$ was ever thought of. I remember playing some of these years ago in local fairs (abuot 30 to 35 years ago). M$ only took these games and released them on a PC in the begining.

As for live being a pay service by it's customer and M$ is also being paid some serious money for the ads on live is nothing more than being double payed for something.

Sony is keeping basic HOME free because there using this ad money to pay for the majority of the service. Although there are things you can purchase in HOME but it's not something that you have to do to play on-line.

I hope that when HOME is released that Live will fall flate on it's face because this will help keep the other services free.

yay for economics!

haha "there's no such thing as a free lunch"

in reality though, im not an avid pc gamer so i dont know what MS' motives are and how things are run right now.

But based on my political stance on issues such as these. Microsoft can do whatever they want, it's a fre market economy. If people don't like it (which, judging by this board, the majority seems to agree with the statement), then it won't sell and it will probably fade away. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Chances are you're running a Microsoft product on your computer right now...maybe even if you have a Mac.

Look, MS just can't say to all pc dev/publisher that live will become mandatory to play video game on Window. First, Valve/d2d/blizzard, etc. would sue them to death and they will most likely win. Decond they will actually lose custumer to other operating system like linux Third, this is illegal (forcing a monopoly in an open platform=illegal everywhere except in Kosovo)

I was at a electronics show today and the M$ show couldn't even get there Vista to do any basic task. It couldn't even get on-line although it had it's own dedicated IP service sitting rite beside the system.

I've been thinking about it recently, and figured it might be something with the skill-based matchmaking and avoiding certain players features. That's a lot easier to implement when the people hosting the game are the same people in the game. If you have those same people trying to connect to one server, things get... complicated.

[QUOTE="karasill"]Ummm, that's because the ported games were designed for Windows and ported over, of course it's going to run like crap. If games were designed for Apple's OS it would be fine. If Windows never exsited then Devs would have built games from the ground up on Apple's OS, just like they do for Windows now..... I can't say it any easier dude :| We never needed MS for PC gaming. Another company like Apple or Linux would have stepped up to the plate and would have been about as big as Microsoft is now.Makari
Part of the reason Windows works so well for gaming is Microsoft's locked-down attitude with Windows & DirectX. Before that, getting games going was a freaking nightmare, especially under DOS and the like. I mean, you can see the snafu that happened in Vista when they simply took out DirectSound, lol.

Yes, I love Windows locking us down with Direct X and forcing me to upgrade to Vista to run Direct X 10, or in some cases, forcing me to upgrade to Vista to play certain games that just, clearly, do not require Vista (Halo 2 anyone? Not that I really wanted to play that...).

Seriously, if an open platform like Linux was the standard for PC Gaming it'd be a much happier place, and the future of PC gaming would also be far brighter.

at least it doesn't lag as much ...or give us spyware.turgore

EDIT:  Please..... doesn't lag as much? You do realise Xbox Live doesn't have dedicated servers - you do realise that right?

So how are the drivers on open-source? =P That's the main holdup, IMO. Microsoft gave everybody one target platform to develop for, and Windows XP was the culmination of that - pretty much every piece of hardware was guaranteed to work with it, giving the game developers one single unified platform to aim for. The antithesis of that is a BAD thing. Are you old enough to have been around for MS-DOS and the like? Making sure your IRQ ports didn't conflict, creating boot disks with autoexec.bat set to disable hardware to free up enough memory to actually run the game? PC's under Windows are already a Wild West nightmare of compatibility and conflicts to developers as it is.

Windows live is the exact thing PC gamers hate, developer control....

Valve knew what they were doing, when they made steam and the source engine, it was specifclly designed to be as customizable and moddable as possble...thats why Steamworks supports mods and Live doesnt....and untile live does support them, along with clan run servers that also seem to be missing....Windows live will never be used for anything but MS games and the most mediocre third party ones.

No, if you played any games using it currently you would know it is a total disaster and is not something that is recieved well by PC gamers that have been recieving an even better online service for free for a long time now.

still microsoft knows how to make it work so all hermits will benefit and lemmings will benefit...its really an amazing service

GFWL flopped like hell already so don't worry. It will remain mostly in MS games. After how horribly Universe at war flopped (first 3rd party GFWL game) both criticaly and in sales I don't think we need to fear GFWL infecting many other pc games

All GFWL games have failed this far, so I hope they drop it soon, then again MS is pretty persistent so who knows. If they weren't so greedy and released their games via Steam they could had been hits, but no, it's MS, they can't support another company even when it's for their own best.

All GFWL games have failed this far, so I hope they drop it soon, then again MS is pretty persistent so who knows. If they weren't so greedy and released their games via Steam they could had been hits, but no, it's MS, they can't support another company even when it's for their own best.EntwineX
Hmmm this is probably the best post in here. Not because its bashing MS but because everything about MS being stubborn and greedy even if it means shooting themselves in the foot is so true. They have to compete with everything, even if it means shoehorning something that no one wants until it becomes desirable. Actually that kind of happened with the xbox. When if first came out and had no support, it was a worthless ugly box with big controllers. Now its a viable alternative to the Playstation and Nintendo platforms. However, this situation is a little different because its going to hurt the PC market before it benefits it.

MS should just try to find a way to buyout Valve/Steam and keep Live on consoles.

Game devs don't have to support it....It's like getting mad at scat porn, DON'T WATCH IT!(In this case, don't use it).

I enjoy xbox live for my 360 and my old xbox. But i agree its a little ridicolous to make PC gamers pay for xboxlive when they only play one game online (gears or shadowrun for an example)

I think the idea is great to have console players against PC players for some games. But make it free for PC gamers to play there LIVER enabled games with xbox live players.

Maybe telling them by not purchasing their products would be a better way to get your message across, unless you think posting on a message board that they probably don't or won't ever read helps... :wink:farrell2k

Most of their games suck anyway, especially Halo 3.
