"I think that there's probably one other element to it, and that's that our view of how we use E3 has changed. For a very long time, E3 was an event where — and certainly Nintendo included — catered specifically to the core gamer. Now we look at more … an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.

So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we're still working on many of those titles, but it's just not the type of event where we'll be showcasing that anymore."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25710005/

Well, I think that explains pretty much.

Well said. Nintendo can save the real announcements for events where dumb non-gamer press won't follow.

Nintendo, unfortunately, seems to have grasped more than anyone else what the new E3 is about. There is no point in making fan-servicy trailers when the people in the audience want to here how well your company is doing, and how well you can do in the future.

On the other hand, since Nintendo acknowledges that E3 is different, might we expect to see them at the Tokyo Game Show? :D

Yeah, the press there was very dumb and non-gamer, thats why they never cheered or applauded for any of nintendo's announcements, but they did at least a few times when microsoft and sony showed off games, I'm sure they are just dumb non-gamers though.

Most people knew this already, but I hope this is the final nail in the coffin of that silly argument that Nintendo have abandoned the hardcore and that Nintendo had a "bad" E3. A new Pikmin, Star Fox and Zelda are all in development.

This isn't a direct quote from Miyamoto, you just had to read between the lines during Nintendo's conference. :P

In all seriousness though, that is definitely the way E3 looks now. E3 sucks.

it's pretty much what i thought. E3 is for mass media and the mass market. the core gamers will find out of about their favorite games whenever it's announced and on a million different websites. casuals will see news reports about stuff shown on E3. I saw NBC, ABC, and heard NPR already do reports on it. with this much exposure it makes sense to target the larger audience.

WTF is Miyamoto talking about? All hardcore gamers were satisified. We got AC for the Wii and GTA Chinat Town for the DS.

That's as hardcore as they come 8)

You're in denial, E3 is not what it used to be.

Who do they think is going to be watching? The casuals? :lol:SSCyborg

The investors... The retailers... they want to hear how well the company is doing, and why they should support the company. Simply saying the name Grand Theft Auto is better than showing a pikmin trailer. Announcing the sequel to a hit game is bigger than showing more about Warioland, a game we already know about.

True, to us the conference was dissipointing, but to the media... to the people actually in the seats at the theatre? Nintendo stole the show. They have a very different idea of what makes a good showing.

lol yeah right

Because when I want to know what's going on at E3 I'll tune into my regional news or CNN instead of a website with the word "game" in it.

Also my mom really enjoys watching E3 for all the new types of gameplay being introduced there.

Did you see gamers (casuals or harcore) in the conference? Not much. You can see people of Wal Mart, Toy R Us, etc etc who wants to know how manufactorers are planing to apeal the market, and then decide if/how much consoles to buy for their respective shops. That's why it is called "Business Submit".

Considering how few core games Nintendo has announced since the Wii launched, even outside of E3, why should I think that there are tons of cool games just on the horizon?

Even these sequels in the indefinite future are concerning to me, given quotes like these:

Frankly, some of the so-called "franchise games" are quite difficult for nongamers to play, so making accessible games for these players is key. With Zelda, we have to consider how to make it accessible for new gamers to pick up and play and enjoy just as hardcore gamers have. For example, we've got the Touch Generations series. Now, we're not necessarily going to make our "franchise" games in that 5tyle, but we'll take what we know and have learned -- the philosophy behind those games -- and incorporate it into franchise games. That's a philosophy that's very strong at Nintendo.

Shigeru Miyamoto

I don't hate accessible games, but given the way Nintendo's games have been trending, I'm not sure this is such a good thing for me.

There you go. The mainstream press like Times Magazine, New York Times, MSN, etc. are there reporting E3 and casuals will read these publications and learn all about Nintendo's casual games. This leads to profit.

MS did it with their conference. Sony tried to appeal to casuals with LBP.

Like I said so many times before, this is not the E3 you knew.

Yup, Ninty will be getting money (that's what they care), we will be getting games (because that thay didn't show them on the conference doesn't change that they are being made), so everybody happy.

Yeah, and even then, simple Wii-sports games didn't show it off at all, I wana see ACTUAL 1:1 motion, like varying sword swings, stabs, and doing more then simple horizontal, veritcle, and diagonal slashes, since I'm sure even the Wii-mote can do that, I wana see someone like spin a sword in their hand and have it actually happen, thats what I THOUGHT the 1:1 motion would be, but its not even remotely close to that.

You have to laugh at all the "core" gamers spitting blood at Nintendo. Its comedy at its finest.

"Oh noes, Nintendo has abondoned us despite all our support...oh, wait."

Face it, you lot had made up your minds about Nintendo being the anti-christ a long time ago. No better than a bunch of fanboys defending a console to the death. Only difference is many of you seem determined to attack them to the death.

Nintendo has to address the retailers and investers at some point. I'm not sure how much control Nintendo has over who's invited to their press conference, but the point is, E3 is not an open event, it is a business summit. True, Nintendo could have showed us a whole bunch of pre-rendered trailers for games we already knew about, and while we're all partying, Nintendo's stock would go down the toilet. Whether or not you were watching a live feed, you weren't in the room, and you weren't invited. The people that were invited, and were in the room had a very different idea of what a good E3 show would be, so Nintendo was catering to them, not you.

then they should have added 20 minutes to the presentation for fan service.

Who do you think watches it in the crowd? YOU? Other "Hardcorez"? No, the press, not see the topic about Nintendo being on all the news sites? Do you not understand that Nintendo is utilising a convenience, that's what E3 is a way for them to show off upcoming games that will excited the press. Not to show off big games just to try and "WIN TEH E3!!!!"

Agreed. If Ninty had shown 10 hardcore games the argument would be "just a bunch of re-hashed garbage blah blah blah".

I dont see why Sony is getting a free ride, what did they ever show to be for the hardcore? Why don't they get more flack for catering to movie watchers? When Jack Trenton came out he was going on about actors for god sake.

To sum it up: "We've selled out to where the money is at - casual gamers. Don't worry core gamers, we haven't forgotten about you, we just want to tuck you away in a dark place where no one else can see you."
