8.5 huh? Not bad. Who was that guy running around here saying this game COULDN'T score lower than a 9?

His overall pros of the game were even more than some 9.5 games. Shao Khan mustve really pissed him off though.gaming25
If i was him i'd probably be the same way and i guess i better warn others who didn't faced him yet. (and no i do not approve of it being a con to reduce score)
Problem with Shao Kahn is, he's VERY very cheap. Unless you're a master of MK i personally don't recommend getting up close with him. One of Kahn's attack is him throwing his hammer at you, it cannot be blocked and when it hit you you get stunned for a few seconds, leaving you open to an attack and seeing its Kahn, each attack he does take a large chunk of your life bar.
Another attack he'll love to spam is his forward charge and believe me, he will do it two or three times in a row if need be and when he does it he gets way closer to you, leaving you open to other attack of his.
By far the most annoying aspect of Kahn (and any bosses characters) is when he attack and you attack him at the same time, he lose life but doesn't stagger, think of it as some sort of invincibility frame so what happen then? You take a hit in the face!
Say i use Raiden in a classic ladder mode, the only way i could beat Kahn is by becoming a spammer, sometime Kahn will taunt you, giving you 2 or 3 second to attack him, so what i'd need to do is using raiden teleport move, uppercut Kahn, re-teleport to gain distance, rinse and repeat till Kahn dies, its easier said than done though because sometime if your timing is off you'll hit Kahn and he'll get that invincibility frame i mentionned above.

Don't see why they didn't give it a 9 anyway, they did that for dead space 2. 360 version got .5 under the PS3 version so what can we think of that? :p
The bad because Shao Kahn is cheap???? Wow Gamespot...really....wow...MickeyTheNinja
Gamespot needs more skill. But he is tough though, I've seen how tough he was on a recent stream.

PS3 version is 8.5 too.The 8.5s continue, gamespot gave out a ton of 8.5s recently.
The response from events was so universally positive that it was hard not to expect a 9. And it would have been a 9, if it weren't for some unforeseeable problems that don't have to do with the fighting system.Honestly, who didn't see this score coming.

But to say the bad part of the game, is because the main boss is cheap? He isn't cheap, he is playing like Shao Kahn and is very beatable even when i'm a character I suck with (Sheeva). That is incredibly stupid of GS to say.

The bad because Shao Kahn is cheap???? C'mon!! It's a LAME cons for this game... it's a fighter, fighter gamers know bosses tend to be cheap most times.
Seriously lame TBH.

Seth is absolutely a bad thing about SFIV (though minor), because he's not fun to fight at all. The arcade mode would have been quantifiably better without him.
By this time someone should have found a way to make a boss challenging instead of cheap. There's no excuse for it.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing lol.
It met hype and I really want to play this game since it made me interested in the series again.
I think GS just found a reason to mark it down. That's all. MickeyTheNinjaSo they must be dishonest because they didn't give it the score you wanted to see. I don't necessarily think the score fits either, but not because I think there's some ridiculous plot to give it an 8.5

to be fair. shao kahn has to be one of the cheapest/lamest boss fights in fighting game history. Yes, even more lame than seth. At least with Seth, players could actually fight with tactics they'd apply on normal characters. The first several attempts you make at Shao Kahn, you think the fight is impossible to win given how much damage he does and how he seemingly parries and stuns you to death. Then you figure out that you can spam jump kicks all day and Shao Kahn can't do jack to touch you. So, the fight goes from being ridiculously hard to just being one big jump kick spamfast, which isn't much better. How's the game going, fellas? I love the old MK games. NAPK1NS
I had to stop playing cause well i wanna keep some stuff to discover, i still have well over 250 challenges to do, i want to get every alt though it shouldn't be long seeing i must've about 55% of the krypt completed.
Might give it a shot online sometime, but not now, not until i've learned and mastered combos
360 controller is crap for this MK, its just not comfortable to play with the dpad, and the analog stick is too inacurate. I think i'll have to swap this for the PS3 version.
NaveedLife
lol yep. The PS3 controller is one of the most versatile controllers out there, but it may not be the most comfortable for all games in some peoples eyes.
It pisses me off when I lose the crucial battle (when both fighters have a pixel of energy left each) due to d-pad's suckage: for example making a DOWN + RIGHT + Y move, instead of uppercut which is DOWN + Y which is what I wanted. Or miss-hit the fatality combination.

Raiden is THE most limited character to EVER face Shao Kahn, see with Noob Saibot the fight's piece of cake, or even with Liu Kang, but Raiden is so limited it's not even funny. How could anyone like him after realizing how sucky vs Shao Kahn he is?

Hell even Guilty Gear bosses can be cheap as hell. Sometimes not even for the wrong reason. Golden Order Sol actually has pretty decent AI on top of being able to do like 75% of your healthbar if he gets a decent hit. Yea trust me I know about SNK boss syndrom. The games know they are cheap so they even give yout the option to pick bonuses so you have more of a chance to take them down. Oh god those KOF bosses were so dam cheap.
Anyone know where i can unlock classic costumes or where to purchase?l____x___O____lYou must purchase them in the Krypt (that's in Extras) first and then you have to click on the respectable character in the Nekropolis in order to get it unlocked.
Street fighter 4 got a 9 and it was street fihgter alpha 1.5 and beeing a VERY POOR GAME. what a lame game. and Mortal Kombat with SO many options and modes and unlockables gets 8.5... while 8.5 is a great score it shpould have gotten higher than that crap named SF4.
all fighters are crap and should score AA and below except DoA imo .... too bad the game didn't really improve after DOA2 but still the best fighter I played.Street fighter 4 got a 9 and it was street fihgter alpha 1.5 and beeing a VERY POOR GAME. what a lame game. and Mortal Kombat with SO many options and modes and unlockables gets 8.5... while 8.5 is a great score it shpould have gotten higher than that crap named SF4.

So I haven't read the GS review yet, but guessing from the responses I assume the main issue was Shao Khan?
If so, thats a little weak. I've played him four times and lost once ( the first time). Mind you, I only played the ladder on normal difficulty, but still. He's not impossible to beat by any means. Maybe it was easier since I was playing tag ladders? He is cheap, not denying that, but you just have to be cheap right back. Scorpion can get him pretty easily and Raiden just walks all over him with ease. Also I know its not a great excuse but almost every last boss from fighting games is cheap.
And hes just a last boss, the vast majority of time people will spend on this game wont be fighting Shao Khan. I'm going to be spending hours upon hours on the challenge tower, some ladders, the story mode and most of all VS. mode. Shao Khan is just a drop in the ocean as far as what this game has to offer.
Maybe the reviewer just got caught up in some bad luck, or happened to pick a character that doesn't fair well against Khan. Some characters like Sub don't stand much of a fair chance while others like Raiden make it a walk in the park. Maybe he just couldn't find a tactic, restarted 100 times and let it get to his head. We all have those moments (for me it was Alma on my first Ninja Gaiden playthrough lol).
Oh well, 8.5 is still a fitting score and meets my original hype on the dot.... but since then I actually got to play the game and really thought AAA was in the bag. Guess I was expecting too much. :P
So far this is my favorite game to come out this year though and I never thought I'd get to say something like that about MK again. So screw the scores!
It took me 4 hours to beat Shao Kahn in Story Mode.
It's Raiden who you play with against him there.
And yes, I'd call that incredibly cheap too, but with Liu Kang or Noob Saibot it's a piece of cake. Anyway, I wouldn't give it a lower score solely because of that.So I haven't read the GS review yet, but guessing from the responses I assume the main issue was Shao Khan?

i really don't see how 8.5 is a flop for any game.
especially with a .5 scoring system.
PcGamingRig
Well the game met hype as far as the System Wars game goes. And even outside of the hype/flop meta-game, an 8.5 is still a fitting score. I love this game, but I dont think it deserved a 10 or anything. Maybe a 9, but 8.5 is certainly a fair score.
Damn Salt, 4 hours?
Again, I only played normal ladders so maybe the story mode Shao Khan is much more difficult... or maybe I was just VERY lucky. 4 hours would definitely piss me off.
But Raiden seems to be a great guy for the job. Teleport behind him every time he charges and go combo crazy, or jump over his projectiles and do a mid air super man to either fly over him or hit him high. Thats really all I needed to do andalmostwent flawless a few times. I still need to do a run with Noob. I'm really enjoying his character. Bet he has a cool ending.
But yeah definitely a dumb reason to downscore the game.
Raiden seems to be ok for VS or ladder play.
Anyway, the difficulty in story mode at times is really cranked up, because on the same diffculty (normal that is) in ladder mode it isn't that hard to beat the game.
