Microsoft's group product manager Aaron Greenberg has said that SCE boss Kaz Hirai's recent "Xbox lacks longevity" comments demonstrate a "complacent attitude [that] is out of touch with where the industry and consumer is today."

Hirai told the Official PlayStation magazine UK that Xbox "lacks longevity", and that there's "no way that at the end of a life cycle our competition is going to have a higher install base."

Greenberg obviously disagrees. "This sounds like an old hardware company that's comfortable with its market position. That complacent attitude is out of touch with where the industry and consumer is today," he told The BitBag.

"This generation won't be won over just hardware specs, but who can out-innovate when it comes to online and software. This is the kind of stuff that's in our DNA, and frankly moves the console war onto our home court.

"I'm confident," he went on to say, "we will outsell the PS3 throughout the entire generation by providing more innovation and building the best and broadest games library while growing our entertainment experiences on the leading online network.

"With a U.S. install base lead now of more than 7 million units (according to NPD), I can't imagine any scenario where the PS3 can catch up with us. In fact, even if you doubled the current PS3 sales and Xbox 360 remained flat, they couldn't close the gap until 2014," he added.

----

So there you have it SALES do matter, it doesn't matter if you have more AAAAE's or more AA/AAA/AAAA/AAAAA/AAAAAA games what matters in a buisness world is the profit and profit comes from sales.

Sony doesn't know what a profit is with respect to the PS3 which is why they might be a bit confused.

Funny to see Microsoft & Sony being so combative when they'll still only be second play when the smoke clears. Nintendo wins.

Why do companies even respond? I mean look at nintendo. They dont dabble in these measuring contests like MS and Sony do, because they know they are gonna come up on top. Its like sex, the people that are having it, dont talk about it.

Hah if these numbers is true "even if you doubled the current PS3 sales and Xbox 360 remained flat, they couldn't close the gap until 2014" it must feel hard for Sony lol

I love my Ps3 more than 360 tho :D

Um, are you confused? Kaz Hirai stated that even though they're in last place, in his mind, they're still #1. When has Greenburg ever said anything out of touch like that? After Sony came out with that price comparison chart, Greenburg replied saying he would rather focus on talking about why people should buy the 360, rather than trashing everyone else. If you ask me, he's the most down to earth.

Yep and gamers lose as Mini game #2649 tops the sales chart in 2010

the Wii's success is a nail in the coffin or real games.

anyway MS and Sony can trumpet as much as they want .. but at the end of this round of console wars i'm betting the result will be as close to a draw as you can get.

They're both just as bad. Greenburg said stupid things in the past as well and the fact he's responding to Kaz right now makes him no better than him. Still enjoyable to watch tho.

I wasn't necessarily talking about this, but both Aaron Greenburg and Shane Kim have made some very arrogant statements recently.

360 is half the price of PS3, and the PS3 is matching it. This guy must be joking if he thinks that hes going to topple the PS3, with Halo spin offs of flops like Too Human. 10 years is a long time, PS2 is still on the market while Xbox is in a waste basket.

he was right, the gap in north america is 7 million, it's actually closer to 9 million worldwide, sony would have to sell 3 million more consoles than the 360 a year for 3 years to match the 360's installed base by 2012 (the predicted end to this gen) he was also right when talking about online being in Microsofts DNA, MS where doing online gaming before sony even thought about releasing a games console, if online gaming is the future, then MS clearly has a big advantage over sony as they have a ton more experience in that area.

the next gen begins when the first next gen console comes out, not when sony says it does, the ps3 will not match the 360's install base by the end of this gen.

right, the PS3 came out a year later. Not that big of a deal. GRAW was the first net gen 360 title.

"Matching" is not the word I'd use, considering that two years after the gap is about 8 millions. And the PS2's situation is not comparable to the PS3's. The PS2 was profitable, had the best software sales and the biggest userbase. The PS3 has neither of them and it is not profitable.

GRAW was an excellent game, the ps3 is a good machine, i honestly think the only thing holding it back is the price, they took a gamble with blu ray, and it didn't pay off, yes it won the war against HD-DVD but it didn't win the war against DVD, at least sony got the cost of R&D out of the way this gen, next gen when blu-ray is finally accepted they will have more experience than the other company's, and company's learn MORE from there mistakes,i expect sony to make a big comeback with there next console.

yeah Microsoft surely can out-innovate anything. Just look at how powerful Internet explorer is compared to the competition and the fail-proofness of windows OS series

Got my PS3 with 2 games for 450$. The price may be expensive but you really get what you pay for. Blu-ray,wifi,HDMI.. the list goes on. Wants PS3 hit its sweet price.. it will leave both Wii and 360 in the dust in sales.

I highly doubt that. The Wii is the only thing that will stop the Wii, not anything Sony or MS does at this stage. The PS3 would have to do something like quadruple its sales and have the Wii have a sales shrink and have that last for years.

Got my PS3 with 2 games for 450$. The price may be expensive but you really get what you pay for. Blu-ray,wifi,HDMI.. the list goes on. Wants PS3 hit its sweet price.. it will leave both Wii and 360 in the dust in sales.

don't need blu-ray or wifi (hardline is better) to play games, and all xbox 360's (including the arcade) are HDMI now, and the 360 elite has a bigger harddrive than the ps3 but costs 50 quid less.

Right at the moment Nintendo can't make enough Wiis to satisfy the demand and so haven't dropped the price since launch, even though it's been making them a profit since day 1.

What's the lowest price you think Nintendo can drop to without worry $50? And you think PS3 can take that heat? I doubt it

Yes, and without a HDD you miss out on a lot of content, plus xbla games.Adrian_Cloud

There again, you are missing my point. My point is simple:

considering that what most people want from a console is simply and solely to play GAMES, with the 360 you really get what you pay for:

- By the critic: the best exclusives

- A lot of PC/PS3 multiplats

All that with a console that costs $200.

I highly doubt that. The Wii is the only thing that will stop the Wii, not anything Sony or MS does at this stage. The PS3 would have to do something like quadruple its sales and have the Wii have a sales shrink and have that last for years.

:| I was referring to monthly sales.

Look all you have is JUST WAIT and the PS3 will rule all. I think I can safely say everyone is bored to death of hearing PS3 fans saying again and again to just wait and the PS3 will crush everything. Just wait till PS3 launch, European launch, MGS release, Uncharted release, new sku, price drop.......ok we get it this entire gen PS3 fans will be saying JUST WAIT and the PS3 will win for some reason.Meanwhile still last in game library, sales for hardware and software but I guess if we wait just a little longer all this will change cause 2 years was not enough.

i did say etc... but i'm not going to through all the additional PS3 features. ANYHOW. Wifi(more convenient, and just as good for console games), wireless GAMING nuff said. So there about 5-9 million 360s without HDMI? If your going to talk about the Arcade model, whats the point of even mentioning HDD size.

It amazes me to no end that everyone applauds Microsoft simply because they make retaliatory statements. It doesn't matter if they're substantive or not, people just feel that they have the high ground since they're in defense mode. This is like the third "Microsoft just owned Sony/Kaz!" thread where people applaud the mere action of speaking out against criticism. Sony's done the same thing and the past and was considered to be disingenuous over it. I mean, I could pick apart everything that the Microsoft talking head just said in the same way that people here love to pick apart Kaz Hirai's statements, but they'll still be considered the ones who took the high ground. It's pathetic.

You don't need DVD's to play games either. Cartridges still work. And I didn't realize that having the Wi-fi option was a bad thing.

Microsoft's group product manager Aaron Greenberg has said that SCE boss Kaz Hirai's recent "Xbox lacks longevity" comments demonstrate a "complacent attitude is out of touch with where the industry and consumer is today."

Nomad0404

I'm a Sony fan and I agree with MS's comments here. I don't necessarily see "innovative software" on the 360, but that is a matter of opinion I guess.

What I do disagree with is your closing comments. I agree that sales do matter as does profit...but you close by saying Sony is confused because they don't know what profit is. I'd like to remind you that if losing money causes mental confusion, then MS was Mentally confused for the whole 4 year life of the original Xbox, and confused for the first 2 years of the 360.

Meanwhile Nintendo is the least confused yet they seem to think it is a great idea to just re-release GC games instead of work on new IPs.
