No wonder Capcom didn't want to release Super Street Fighter 4 on the PC.

Get ready to see a lot more DRM and anti-piracy efforts in the next generation of console and PC games.

Software developers aren't going to continue to take it up the arse forever.

lundy86_4

290,000 copies of MW2 sold is just ridiculous. There is no comparison to consoles on this game. 360 has sold almost 11 million, and PS3 has sold over 6 million. There is no PS3 piracy yet, and 360 MW2 piracy has to be very minimal since modded consoles can no longer get on Xbox Live. Activision shafted the Wii on this game, but even the Wii CoD games sell over 1 million copies.

I wonder how much money Activision is wasting just to pay for all the extra server bandwith for these pirates.

Still, that's definitely because of the lack of dedicated servers.

Not that I like Activision, but why? Just because PC gamers feel entitled? So because Activision charged $60 instead of $50, and didn't have dedicated servers, that gives 4 million people the right to steal their property? Two wrongs dont make a right, and this just perpetuates PC gaming's problems.

So is that 290,000 retail sales USA only? I mean it doesn't say Worldwide. It says retail as well, is it even including DD?

The fact the games been in the top 10 best sellers on Steam since release i find it hard to believe.

I don't get what point you are trying to make. I only said they are susceptible, not comparable. Of course it's much easier to pirate on PC, as consoles must be modded (different with handhelds).

Eh, considering what they did to the PC version I'm not surprised. I just wouldn't buy it on PC personally as I do own it on PS3 and 360 (Yes, on both, to play with friends...don't ask). But I'm not surprised PC gamers pirated it as much as they did.

Most DD services rarealy release sales data, and simply offer a top-selling list. You need actual sales figures from the pub/dev usually.

I never said they have the right, you are strawmaning my entire point. I specifically said I was not justifying piracy, or in any way supporting it. This result is merely the result that *should* have been foreseen by Activision when they charged more for the game, removed all the PC-centric options and royally screwed the entire PC community.

Now, don't get me started about how its impossible to accurately track piracy figures and this number probably being highly out-to-lunch. Piracy also isn't solely an issue on PC. Both DS and PSP are *huge* markets for pirates, especially considering how simple it is compared to even the PC. It is an issue that effects the entire gaming industry, and as proven many times before, the best way to avoid it, is to give the gamers incentive to spend their money on your games.

Just like you'll see more and more console games jump to PC. It's happening on both sides due to costs of production this gen.

However, piracy is no doubt a part for certain devs/pubs.

So as the link claims no sources, states retail, and doesn't say if its worldwide we can assume this number isn't reflective of the total sales at all, yet the pirated figure is. Thats great reporting right there.

I'm sure MW2 on PC worldwide, including all DD has sold 1+ mill, didn't they even state they were happy with sales?

I agree, it's obviously not a fair comparison as many outlets still only release retail PC sales. Even NPD wants to start tracking digital services, as they are starting to take over in a huge way.

Because console piracy, supposedly, isn't an issue. Piracy only exists on PC, which is why it is always claimed to be a detriment of the system, and why developers keep "jumping ship" to consoles, which don't have piracy problems.

The level of ignorance, even propounded by some developers and publishers, regarding the state of piracy in the gaming industry, is absolutely mind-boggling. Many developers make claims like those used in threads here on System Wars.

The 970,000 360 pirated copies are not insignifcant, but 360 has also sold close to 11 million copies now. Also, none of those 970,000 people can play the multiplayer part of the game online-- which I think is kind of pointless because single player MW2 is pretty lame in comparison to multiplayer.

Didn't it sell like 8+ million on 360? Maybe a little less on PS3. Problem with those figures for pc is the fact that 290,000 is far less than the pirated amount of 4 million. :?

Perhaps if the 360 version sold only 1 million with 970,000 copies pirated you'd havedevs/people in an uproar. Granted, the pc numbers don't look at DD. So they're fairly useless.

Hmm, those numbers seem a tad suspect. But they don't take into account geography (where is the pirating happening? Is it spread evenly or concentrated in particular regions?) or how many copies, particularly physical copies, were manufactured - numbers alone tell us nothing.

Their data doesn't include STEAM, so it obviously falls short of how many copies of MW2 were really sold on the PC. However, usually these people that count how many times a game was pirated also admit that their piracy estimates are very conservative. This wasn't a great article because it didn't mention any sources of where the number were obtained from.

lol so we just have one wrong and activision gets away with it? Get out of here, serves them right.. now publishers won't think about pulling these stunts. When SCC tanks that will only solidify pc gamer's stance on the whole fiasco.

Case in point: Sins of a Solar Empire

No DRM, sold well beyond developer expectations. All they offered was significant multipalyer updates to people who bought a legal copy. When people see a game worth buying, they will buy it. There are some pirates out there (a small percentage) that never buy games, so trying to stop them is pointless, because they will always find a way to circumvent any protection (i.e. DRM being hacked, making it easier for illegal players to play, and harder for legal players to play).

You mean pirated multiplayer on PC? I have never played MW2 on PC, so I wouldn't know. Does anyone know if pirates can play multiplayer MW2 online on the PC? It seems to me that if you couldn't, MW2 would be a pretty lame game.

As far as i'm aware, you can't play pirated MW2 on PC either.

You mean pirated multiplayer on PC? I have never played MW2 on PC, so I wouldn't know. Does anyone know if pirates can play multiplayer MW2 online on the PC? It seems to me that if you couldn't, MW2 would be a pretty lame game.

Yup. I don't think it's possible to play the game online unless it's a legitimate copy.

I enjoyed the SP quite a lot, but I agree that the majority "meat" of the game is in the MP component.

These people truly sicken me. They're the entire reason why PC gaming is in the state that it's in.
