New PSN Update Killing Older Consoles, Sony's Problems Mount

So far Rockstar has confirmed that LA Noire plus other games kill older consoles with the newest patch from Sony

We have received some reports of PS3s overheating while playing L.A. Noire or beeping three times before shutting down/turning themselves off, mostly on older 60GB and 80GB fat models. Primary reports seem to be that updating to firmware 3.61 will cause PlayStations to overheat.

There have been various reports of this on a few different games now, all reporting their PS3s turning off or "Red Lighting" after having installed 3.61. This can range from games randomly freezing to PS3s turning off anywhere between 30 mins use to 2 hours. We have confirmed locally that multiple games (Rockstar and non-Rockstar) overheat or freeze only when 3.61 is installed.

just hilarious, this just cant be maken up its so unreal. I feel bad for sony but at the same time come on how could you not see this coming..

Bought my 20GB (which I upgraded to 120GB) back in February 2007 and am having no problems. I played L.A. Noire for about 5 hours straight last night as well.

I have only played Battlefield: Bad Company 2 since the update and luckily it hasn't killed my PS3 so far. It better stay that way.

Isn't the newest 360 update hurting itself as well?

Sounds like the same news that comes out every time a new update comes out.

Plus they aren't even sure it's the firmware that's causing overheating.

Guys, we understand your frustration and no one wants this to be fixed as much as we do (well, we are sure you want it fixed as much as we do, so let's just call it a tie). We are in the process of exhaustively re-testing older PS3 and 360 consoles alike so that we can reproduce this issue and address it as quickly as possible.

There is at least one patch coming in the very short term to address certain issues and we will be as open and transparent as we can about our progress on this overheating problem.

Here are some things we are wondering:

What firmware updates do you guys have? Is it just the one required by the disc that was accessible on the disc while offline or have you all installed the new Sony firmware that just became available when Sony restored PSN service?

Has anyone experienced this overheating problem before trying to access the Sony Store from in-game that is not online yet? Or are all of these issues happening only after trying to access the Sony Store?

wow, now you guys are just getting silly, when gta 4 came out it would make my ps3 overheat and would turn itself off sometimes when i was playing. I'm sure its the game and not the software.

My ps3 fat 80gb gets about 4-5 hours of play time a night. No issues. More than likely just counter to the recent 360 bricking issue update.

So thats why my friend kept on freezing in BFBC2. Hope it's fixed.

Edit: I'm not saying it is'nt possibly a firmware issue, I am however claiming that hysteria is wide spread by now.

Well, I guess that means my PS3 is going to have to remain inactive for a little while longer, as I have one of the 60GB fat systems and I'd rather not see it damaged.

My launch Phat plays LA.Noir just fine, it tends to rev up because I have not cleaned the insides for a while. Other than that it doesn't overheat...just gets loud.Jynxzor

Personally, I think Sony is trying to brick all launch ps3s and as such completely remove B/C. Afterall, this is only affecting the treys people have owned and used for several years.
