http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/25/nintendo-profits-fall-66-in-fiscal-year-3ds-sells-3-61-million/

I've also read further articles that stated if Nintendo Sales don't pick up for 3DS, and do very well for the new Wii-U when it releases then Nintendo could very well be just a software company by 2013.

Let's hope it doesn't come to that but only time will tell, looks like the 3D gimmick of 3DS was a bad move, lets hope this new so called interactive controller for the Wii-U is a much better gimmick, otherwise i think Nintendo isn't long for hardware production.

3DS has not been in a holiday season yet. I think it's still too early to write it off.

If Nintendo survived the Gamecube they will be fine with 3DS and Wii U.

I think the 3DS sales may pick up once ninty decides to market the system right to the people that think it's a new DS iteration.

Because they just lost soooo much money because of the Wii right? Nintendo is so close to bankruptcy

Sorry, but unlike the Gamecube era Nintendo is VERY well off. I don't think people remember how bad in a posititon Sega was in and how bad they ran their company into the ground.

No. Everything they sell pulls a profit... so they are on the opposite side of the spectrum to where SEGA was when they released the Dreamcast. I'm amazed at how a couple slow months and its "OMG NINTENDOZ IZ DIEING!"

MS used other divisions to start up it's own console back in the day

point is both companies have other divisions...ninty is it's own backup....

but to answer: console wise-yes handhelds?-no

They just lost billions of dollars. Nintendo cant afford to lose any money on a console sold. The need to be profiting from their hardware immediately.

I laughed at the part where they thought Nintendo was doomed.

Bith the Wii and DS were huge successes. The wii won the console wars this gen. The GBA is probably one of the best-selling handhelds ever. Once the 3DS gets pokemon and Mario Kart and the usual stuff I'm positive it will be successful as well.

Nintendo will be fine.

Indeed, Sony just had deep pockets to take the hit. Nintendo's consoles sell for profit, and either way Nintendo's pockets are pretty deep now.

Bah ninty is not going any where. At least not yet. The 3DS will pick up during the holidays, and hopefully ninty can get some great games out for it, instead of remakes from old games. I do thin the Wii U is a bad idea though. Once the PS4 and next box come out ninty will be left trailing again possibly, tech wise and that might actually matter this time around.

They showed us what they can do with motion tech and now we are all bored....give us GOOD motion tech with actual next-gen visuals and some of us might come back ninty:)

well when you dont have new product to sell then you dont sell. ninty have barely published anything in ages now and nothing to grab the markets attention. MS have been doing a far better job of that now for the last 12-18 months or so (hence their gaming division seeing a nice bit of growth). 3rd parties have now essentially stopped on the wii (so less licencing also) and ninty only really have SS left to liven up the tills (well xenoblade and last story also...lets hope NOA see some sense on that). after that its wiiu time on the console front (internally its probably wiiu time accross the board already). the 3DS is an issue and this Q4 is going to be very important for it. but again at the mo it has a bit of a content problem. its games appeal only to a very limited segment of the market (and imho it should be 50 quid cheaper...but Q4 may have me eating my opinion :P). when a big game does come sales for it do tend to spike a bit. so there is an element of people waiting for the right time. but if mario kart, a mario platformer and the likes of animal crossing and so on cant shift 3DSs then ninty have a very big problem. but ninty are coming down from a very big high. those wishing for them to tank can keep wishing. if ninty can endure through the N64 and GC then they can suck this up also. now if the wiiu also starts tanking then ninty do need to get very worried. but there still making profit. there down...but still making money. in a recession thats not to bad. it took 2-3 bad gens and terrible losses for sega to bow out. at the mo ninty are in pretty decent shape.

It would be certainly interesting to see Nintendo as a software-only business.

Ever since they've become software-only, Sega's been stronger than ever.

---

It's really coincidental just HOW much the Wii U resembles the Dreamcast.

Both are a "bridge" to the true next-gen consoles in terms of hardware power.

Both have screens in the middle of their controller.

Both come at uncertain times about the company's future.

---

But will this be Nintendo's last gen as a hardware company? Who knows.

Even if it is...

The Dreamcast was one of the greatest consoles ever made. So many incredible 1st-party classics.

If the Wii U goes the way of the Dreamcast, I wouldn't really mind.

---

It would be a fitting swansong for Nintendo's legacy.

That article and any other article that says that is misinformed, if anyone is likely to go the way of Sega by then it's Sony. Nintendo is worth more financially that all of Sony (Not just it's gaming division but the entire Sony Corporation). They could take multiple bad gens and still be in a stable position because they always make a profit. The GCN might not have been as successful as Nintendo's home consoles usually are but they still made a hell of a profit, how many more PS3 gens could Sony take.

Yea, I call horse **** While the 3DS sales have dipped, they are more than expected to pick up during Q4. While Wii may be in the middle of it's worst drought yet, Nintendo isn't in danger. They made huge profits with Wii and all their handhelds. I don't see them dropping out because of a bad stretch.

Maybe Nintendo just got lucky with the Wii + DS.

Things are different now.

Youtube / App Store / Facebook / Flash games are ubiquitous now with consumer culture. They weren't back in 2005. People have many more choices now.

3D WILL NOT catch on as the next big gimmick. And recessions around the world certainly aren't helping anything.

I see the Wii U / 3DS only getting like 25 million lifetime sales (like the GC) unless something miraculous happens.

You do know it was more than just poor sales that put Sega out of the hardware race? Sega of Japan and Sega of America were not working with each other, when USA got the 32X, they knew the Saturn was close by and the whole Dreamcast problem between Japan and America. Sega destroyed themself and only have themself to blame, yeah I loved the Master System and Megadrive but wow did they make so many stupid mistakes.

You just don't know Sega do you?

Sega put out like two add-ons for the Genesis/MD, left Saturn fans in the dark by '98 and discontinued the Dreamcast after three years. Yeah, sounds totaly like Nintendo's millions of sold Wiis and DSes.

The 3DS' sales in Japan doubled just with the recent release of Starfox 3DS. That shows that it's a console waiting to explode sales wise and all it's waiting for is Nintendo to release those 1st party games people love their consoles for.

Not yet but this statement would be more conclusive After Nintendo has bombed the launch of the Wii U. The 3DS has only sold 3 million or so in its 5 month lifespan worldwide. 3 games have been cancelled. Saints Row, Assasins Creed and Mega Man, Plus 2 other 3DS games have been delayed. Plus Nintendo bombed the 3DS launch.

However Nintendo very well could end up going the way of Sega after the 8th Generation is over. The 8th Generation of videogames has barely just begun. IF Nintendo ends up Totally failing with both the 3DS and Wii U. Then I can forsee a final last ditch effort in the 9th Generation of Videogame consoles and handhelds.

But Nintendo has made a profit on its Hardware The Wii has turned a profit from day one. Nintendo has been the King of portable Handheld gaming devices since 1989-2011 only in 2012 could Nintendo loss the crown. To Sony PSvita or Android Tablets Playbookor Acer Iconia etc. And Then there is the Apple Ipad 2 and Ipod touch and the iphone.

So Nintendo could finally lose the #1 place in handheld porttable gaming by the end of 2012. So Nintendo has time to get it together before it pulls a Dreamcast.

Luckily, Nintendo profited from gaming more than the other two companies combined for last 5 years...

Also - Sega sold about 9 milions of Saturns and 10 milions of Dreamcast, Nintendo sold 90 milions of Wiis - dont see the analogy here.

That is a highly unlikely scenario. Sure the 3DS is off to a slow start, but so was the DS. I think that will turn around once something like Mario Kart or Pokemon is released.

Nintendo was first in both handhelds and consoles this generation. They aren't going anywhere any time soon.

Is there really such a thing as a BETTER gimmick?? How does that work exactly??

if it sells more of course.

Sky-

That is a highly unlikely scenario. Sure the 3DS is off to a slow start, but so was the DS. I think that will turn around once something like Mario Kart or Pokemon is released.

Nintendo was first in both handhelds and consoles this generation. They aren't going anywhere any time soon.

Sony went from 150 million PS2s -> 50 million PS3s because of a botched launch. That's 100 million customers lost.

Nintendo could easily go from 90 million Wii's -> 20 million Wii U's if they completely mess up the 8th gen.

The same goes for the DS and 3DS.

Megavideogamer

What, the 3DS sold 3.61 million in it's first full month on the market so unless it was outlawed world wide there is no way it's only sold around 3 million since then. Capcom cancelling megaman means absolutely nothing, they have cancelled a megaman game before. Saints Row and Assassins Creed never started development they where nothing more than glorified concept ideas. Nintendo has already made more of a profit in 5 months on the 3DS than the Vita will likely see in a year or 2 (It will take around 3 years before Sony starts turning a profit on the Vita). How do you know they will bomb the WiiU launch, the 3DS sold 3.61 million and it was not during the holidays and it lacked a big Nintendo 1st party title so what do you think will happen saleswise when the holidays roll by and games like Kid Icarus, Mario 3DS, Paper Mario and Mario Kart are released.

If Sony can pull through the release that was the ps3,I'm sure Ninty will pull through this one.

russiaAK47

playstation consoles are the highest selling of all time.

Ps3 isn't.
