[QUOTE="Timstuff"]This is kind of like boasting about Wii's sales. When most of the audience is casuals with only a fringe minority of core gamers, no-one really cares about how much money it makes except the people who are getting the money. Sorry hermits, but hardcore PC gaming is not going to rise to the top again, no matter how much money Facebook games make.Timstuff

Wow desperate much? Funny thing this isn't including crap like facebook. Too bad we can't see what the hard core market of consoles are with all the wii games, kinect games, psmove games, and other casual crap taking up most of the market for consoles.

We've been hearing this crap for years. "Consoles will go extinct, and the PC will rise again!" And yet every generation, the PC gaming market becomes more and more segmented while the console market keeps growing.

http://kotaku.com/5837957/faux-futurists-want-to-keep-pc-gaming-in-the-past

PC gaming is not going away, but it is hardly going to become the dominant platform for hardcore games. Consoles are where it's at, and I don't see that changing in the foreseeable future. The only way I see PC taking over is if they somehow become as economical and user-friendly as consoles.

How come that chart doesn't seperate the casual and hardcore console market

PC hardware is getting cheaper and more powerful HPs AMD APU based $600 laptops can do entry level gaming from which is pretty impressive for a laptop. What are these Hardcore games cause I don't see things like X3 Terran, ArmA, or Red Orchestra on consoles. Things like Steam are also making things easier for people. What's so complicated about it maybe its the consumers who are too simple minded.

Aren't uncharted2's cutscenes literally just video files?

topgunmv

From what I heard they are indeed CGI, but use game assets. Still doesn't make them look any worse due to good merging with the gameplay.

My point is it makes comparing it to witcher 2 dialog scenes pointless, as those are rendered in real time.

Technically no, but visually yes.

Did you seriously link not only a Kotaku article, but also try to pass off some very poorly made chart with absolutely no proof of it's statistics as fact!?

It is, and has always been the platform for hardcore gamers. It'll never change. Consoles will definitely vanish one day, either due to Windows, or because of cloud gaming.

No point in comparing them visually, as The Witcher 2 still wins. All of TW2's cutscenes are in real time. UC2 uses 1080p pre-rendered files and some in-game with higher quality assets.

They are not CGI. They were rendered with their engine, on a PS3.

In real time? Or are they just video files?

They're video files, but they were rendered on a PS3. I don't know whether or not the cutscenes would have run at an acceptable rate if rendered in realtime.

I believe it. The free to play market is really starting to take off over here as western developers get that people will play a free game that is properly balanced with cosmetic crap you can buy to fund the actual venture.

Yup that Article was nothing but bullcrap and nothing but a desperate attempt for Timstuff. Some day soon, Nvidia's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang is going to walk on stage at some obscure electronics industry event and say these words: "We love PC gaming. Our heritage is in 3D gaming hardware. And that's why we're more excited than ever to announce we're never making another gaming video card again."

Bull crap detected strange how at Sony conference Nvidia seemed pretty happy when they said that they partnered with SOE in making their new Forgelight engine for MMOs on PC and Planetside 2 and EverQuest Next. OR that they seem to sponsor people like Rocksteady and 4A games.

Apparently the idiot that wrote that article thinks PC gaming market is going to transform into a 99% Casual market.

No console graphics can ever match the raw power of a Nvidia GPU, especially when the game specifically utilizes the command set of a GPU - it's akin to a programmer taking a CPU command set and writing an application in Assembly. Games that utilize a GPU command set are much easier to patch, as proven by CDPR and Nvidia in TW2. Now the game runs faultlessly on the current driver. Nvidia has a well-established reputation with game developers, as they have made game-specific 3-D Vision profiles, as well as game-specific driver patches.

PC gaming used to be awesome, now it's a pale shadow of what it was (but still better than console gaming if you like big, complicated games, RTS, MMORPG, Facebook games, etc.) Even the gamers themselves are not of the same calibur. No self-respecting PC gamer would bother arguing with consolites. First of all the PC is not a gaming platform, it's an all-purpose tool. And no, people will never stop making games for it. And no, it's not cheaper, it's much much more expensive than playing on consoles over 8-10 years, probably about 3-4x more expensive. PC might be 9x more powerful but the games aren't 9x as good. Tell me how having 9x more power gets you to play RDR, Halo, UC, and all the other stuff some people enjoy. Not to mention having to deal with logging into multiple services just to play a game you allegedly own and not having a unified system for collaborating with friends. As a long-time PC user : - We played games on PC for decades mainly because we had no CHOICE - Consoles back then were garbage - Games for consoles were garbage - Only choice was game on PC or play Donkey Kong and Pacman on consoles - For some genres, PC is still pretty much the only choice (RTS, MMORPG, etc) - Consoles nowadays are much more advanced than we ever thought they could be - They still don't hold a candle to a decent PC, but still, consoles are better than they have ever been before - This opened up console gaming as an OPTION for SERIOUS GAMERS, before it was not an option - Hence now gaming is split among alot of platforms - PC gamers feel threatened, like they need to defend their "platform" - All gamers have seperated into factions, and commenced faction stupidity - Graphics don't matter. If it did, 5 million people wouldn't be playing Farmville every day - Console gaming, also, will never die but will evolve Nvidia is jealous that none of the consoles are using their chips next gen. So all they have left is the PC gamer market to sell their goods, and that market is projected to shrink over time.

No surprise really, but I think there will always be a console market for the casual gamer. Some people find pcs to be overly complicated.

Consoles are better than before? They still die on a RROD or YLOD, whereas a PC can fix a BSOD with a simple restart. Nvidia has a great reputation amongst game developers that utilize their GPU command set within games, such as the Witcher 1 and 2. Nvidia showed full support for CDPR, matching the dev's patch for 3-D Vision with one of their own to complement TW2.

I think there will be a day when console gaming will end, or revert either back into the PC market or just switch over to the mobile market and consoles will just die out.

Either way, it won't happen by 2014. Nvidia (and remember I'm a PC guy here) is talking out it's butt on this one. Like some have speculated, maybe this statement is over how butthurt Nvidia might be over possibly having no hand in any console for the upcoming generation while rival AMD rolls in the dough with their GPU designs. What surprises me too is that Nvidia is making a PC statement, not one involving smartphones or tablets, a market they are finally seeing some success with after years of trying to break into it thanks to Tegra 2. I think there is more of a future to enjoy there than with consoles, as the mobile market is much like the PC market of years past, wherein people are constantly upgrading to newer, better, faster smart phones. It's a lucrative market for independent game makers who don't need to gain back the large budgets that most console games and many PC games are made with.

Nvidia needs to quit whining and focus on their PC GPU architectures and the mobile market. PC GPU tech is still a highly lucrative business, especially when there graphics are better supported in games, as well as video, editing software, and other general purpose uses, which also has made Nvidia very successful in the server and high end scientific computing world where GPGPU is more relevant to research needs than general x86 and POWER architectures. As previously said, Tegra 2 is finally making Nvidia some real cash, and their newer designs (like the quad core ARM Kal-el) to succeed it are looking pretty good, and in many ways encroaching PC territory in terms of graphics and processing.

Just give the console world the middle finger Nvidia, there is plenty out there for you to do, and show the world what you have learned in years of PC graphics.

Console gaming will always be huge, as long as there are swarms of casual, redneck bro-gamers everywhere in the world who need to be catered too.

Understanding computer specs and updating drivers is too damn hard for them, and they have a right to play too. Them merging with the traditional hardcore console gamers (people like you guys on these forums and me) is what has led to consoles becoming mainstream.

The thing is, PC market is already much larger than consoles.. it just needs to be tapped into more. Until some developers get it out of their heads that consoles aren't the only profitable platforms.. PC will not sell Call of Duty games like the Xbox 360 or PS3. I have a strong feeling that PC will "catch up" because as you can see.. Valve is doing well and many digital download sites are going strong. But as far as hardware goes, PC is and will always be more superior. That's just the fact of life. :P

Of course they were talking about revenue. That's the only thing companies care about.

Is it really news to anyone? The data has been around for a long time already. Consoles are becoming weaker and weaker, while PC gaming is booming.

And it's good. Especially growth of DD and F2P models. Without it we would never again see big budgeted PC exclusive FPSes like Planetside 2 or firefall.

But the market is different. Console owners are never going to mass flock to gaming PCs. A lot of PC guys think that consoles are dying, but really PCs have the same chance of cutting out the console market as Android/iOS.

Well..obviously PC market surpassing console one in revenue won't cause consoles to die. It's just funny that after so many years of console fans claiming PC gaming is dying and everybody is switching to consoles this happened. As turns out, people didn't mass flock from PC to consoles.

What do you mean more revenue by 2014. PC sales wise , game wise or whats the issue here... Only in Q2 of 2011 , sold more than 35million PC to USA and CHINA alone... In 2011 estimated number wil be 135M PC to 2 countries alone. I dont get this revenue thing. PCs are dominating market years now.

Software revenue..ie sales of games (both retail and DD), microtransactions and MMO fees combined. They don't mean hardware

With micortransactions in facebook games and free to play, it doesn't surprise me. As for Nvidia, they say this becasue they want it to happen. They think saying it might make it come true.

Well..looking at radical causalization of console gaming it seems PC is the last platform where hardcore is actually doing good and rising. Will it dominate the whole industry? Nope, but it looks like soon PC will be the last place hardcore gaming exists.

I'm only impressed by this one. And I wouldn't say it looks 9 times better than Uncharted 2.

nameless12345

 yeah because GTA IV modded, Crysis Modded, BF3, Metro 2033 and ArmA 3 totally don't look any better than damage control much?

Since that's presumaby a cut-scene pic from Witcher 2, why not compare it to Uncharted 2 cut-scenes:

I didn't say those games don't look good but what looks good is also a matter of taste. You can brag about DX11 and what ever you will but I can still preffer the looks of a game running on 10 years old hardware over it.

Prerendered cutscenes FTW!!!

Kotaku's damage control is hilarious. They are totaly biased against PC Gaming. It reminds me of the "PC Love Week" where they bashed the platform during the whole period.

Yeah.. a time will come when bros eat pizza, and drink beer while playing MMO's and RTS games, hunched over a 19 inch monitor /sarcasm

Consoles will always dominate in sales because they appeal to casual gamers.

The day when you can buy a pre-built High end rig for $300, will be the day PC's bring in more money than consoles.

Interesting. I live in a small town (~25k population) and I overhear many people talking about their satellite connection. If that much people have satellite (which gives 200-400mb daily limit), I wonder how long it'll take before digital distribution is the majority.

Agreed. Consoles will never die. Where else can you get PC level graphics for $200?

Sorry. Not gonna happen. PC gaming is dying. Nobody wants to deal with costly upgrades, bsod, driver errors, botched ports, late releases (Arkham City), last of 360 controller compat (Battlefield, Mass Effect, etc), and less players online than xbox live

2014 sounds a little early, but it really is inevitable that it will happen, and this is a diehard console gamer saying this. I don't see why the PC elitists still exist. You've already one. PS3 and Xbox 360 are optimized PCs...that's all they are. So really, allof us are playing on PCs now. The only diff is that consoles are closed and PCs are open.

Smith was right. He was always right...It is inevitable.

I am amazed people STILL believe this COME ON now...

Let me tell you 3 easy reasons why it wont happen

1 convience- it is easy to set up a console and immediatly play on a console

2 Family- Your wife, mom, dad, little sister want to play? Well too bad cause the pc basically is a repels them away from it

3 Friends- How many of your friends only play the PC? None of mine do... and when they are asked about it by me they say its nerdy... that perception will never change

Sorry but the day console gaming dies is the day gaming itself dies... the sad truth that nobody seems to want to realize

lolololol, the next gen consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are going to use ATI GPUS. More money only for Nvidia, not Ati.

ocidax

Doing console chips is fine, but it's petite money compared to what Nvidia sells on PC market

Um ATI is AMD.... and Nvidia has the mobile market to make up its lost with not being in console market.

We are talking about PCs and Consoles, not mobiles.
