Sony is cutting the price on the PS3. The 60GB version will now cost $499.
This has supposedly been confirmed by Sony--but a manager from Circuit City was one of the first to report it.

Just to fix a couple of things.
This has NOT been confirmed by Sony. Sony will not say anything until it happens in the hopes that you will still buy one at full price.
A Circuit City Ad was first to show the price drop and was supposedly confirmed by "a merchandising manager at one of the world's biggest retailers (Walmart)".

I don't see how this can happen.
They will loose millions on a $100 price drop let alone a $200 one.
If they do, do this. If I was MS I would do a $150 price drop and match the Wii's price. It would mean around a $50-75 loss per unit but it would hurt Sony more
well this says that sony has confirmed the price drop.

Sony Protection Group isn't Sony...
If it was that Playstation blog, that'd be something else.

And this ones says they declined to comment.

"Well, to make this whole ordeal of a PlayStation 3 price-drop just that much more official, a fellow Neo-GAF poster ShockingAlberto has posted a camera shot of the circular that Canadian Best Buys are using. For Canada, you can expect a price drop of $150CAD, with the new price sitting at $549.99. With the Circuit City story we had held off jumping the gun, but with the leak of the Best Buy circular in Canada revealing the same price-drop (relatively speaking) for our friends up north, we can pretty much confirm that the PS3 is, indeed, getting an official price-drop next week.E3 hasn't even begun, and already I can feel the heat emanating from the burning flames."

What a rip off. Canada's dollar is 5 cents off the U.S. and will match it by years end they say yet we're paying about $70 or more then we should be at the rate today. Absolute B.S.
I thought I would add this.
"If the PS3 price drop does come on July 15, the system will have spent 236 days at its initial price. For historical comparison, the PS2 took 565 days to drop from $299 to $199, while the original PlayStation took 250 days and the original Xbox took 181 days to make similar drops. The GameCube took 176 days to drop from $199 to $149 while the Dreamcast took 245 days to likewise fall. On July 15, the Xbox 360 will have gone 600 days without a price drop in North America."

Oh LOL, I didn't see this thread. Well anyways, I might as well post my theory here as it might get locked later.
If this price-drop is in fact permanent and official, then I just thought of something... remember when there started being rumors of the 80 GB PS3 coming to the US, and how they'd likely lower the 60 GB price to the price of the old 20 GB price? For some reason, Sony went quiet on this issue shortly after. Nobody really knew why.
Now, fast-forward to now, a few days before E3. ... Could this be one of the things they've been saving up for E3? It would certainly make sense, and the timing of this price-drop would certainly support this theory. So what I'm saying is maybe Sony's doing this price-drop so that they'll replace the top-of-the-line model with the 80 GB one.
However, while this would certainly be interesting, it also makes me slightly worried... for quite a few people, the $500 20 GB model looked quite tempting. Unfortunately for the ones who didn't spring for it fast enough, Sony ceased to sell it, which many people deemed a stupid move on their part. Well, what I'm wondering is... could Sony make the same mistake with the 60 GB one? And yes, this would most definitely be a mistake; people have been waiting for a sizeable price-drop for ages, and if they did the same thing with the 60 GB model as they did with the 20 GB model while leaving the 80 GB model at $600... that would piss a lot of prospective buyers off, including me, as it would act as a barrier for more would-be PS3 gamers to join the fold.
So... what do you think of this? Could this be the real reason why they're lowering the price?a_ratchet_fan
i seriously doubt they are going to release the 80 gb model stateside and if they do they will more then likely replace the 60gb model if anything and only sale one model. i think they canceled the 20gb model because they knew they were going to drop the price of the 60gb to $500 later this year.

Now all they need is some big hitters to come out, like MGS4. Then it will be a three horse race...
I cannot imagine this not being true, Sony must acknowledge the fact that the PS3 isn't a success as such. A price drop is inevitable.
the price cut along wtih great games like warhawk, lair, uncharted, heavenly sword the PS3 will start to pick upRagashahs
Yes but it is facing Mass Effect, Halo 3, Bioshock, and Blue Dragon. If Sony does drop the price so will Microsoft and that will put the Premium 360 at $300 and$200 cheaper than the PS3. It will make all those nice looking multi plat games that the 360 and PS3 share that more attrative looking on the 360 price wise.

Retailers are attempting to make some cash by cutting the price at their own rate and cash in before they have to sell it at a worldwide market standard price. Just because some retailers say they know the price cut, doesn't mean its true. Retailers have snake eyes for your money. Sony is always tight lipped about big news and wouldn't let up this news to the dumb retailers.NobuoMusicMakerThe retailers will know much sooner than we will. They need to know for flyers bookkeeping and other other things. You are kidding yourself if you think they are going to lose money so that they could drop the price just to move some units. The only time the retailer would do that is if they put them on clearance so that they could get rid of tham and stop stocking them.

Sony has gone on the record they have no plans for a price cut.books83
I can't find the article, but I believe someone else at Sony said that price cut is something they are looking at. Plus, if they are saving this as a big surprise at E3 don't you think they'd want to keep it a secret? As a post above states the 360 has gone 600 days without a price cut, the longest of all consoles mentioned in that post.
Sony doesn't want it's thunder stolen when they do announce that drop. If they announce that they are dropping the PS3 60GB to $499 and then Mircrosoft drops the Core to $199 and the Premium to $299, they would destroy everything Sony hopes to achieve with a cut.
Also, if I remember correctly Nintendo was going to sell the Wii at $200 until retailers started complaining, so they bumped it to $250 and included Wii Sports. Who's to say that Nintendo won't drop also, though they are definitely the least likely of the big 3 to do so. They are still riding high and selling extremely well at the current price.
I'm not saying a price cut is coming next week for any of them, but Sony in particular really needs one and next week at E3 would be a great chance to do so. They are going to be showing some heavy hitters there and to be able to also say,"And you can play all of these games by purchasing a PS3 at the new price of $499 USD!" would really give them a great E3.

They've taken quite a hit on returned 360s to this day, given, but that ///estimated/// $1 billion should be taken with a grain of salt. They are going to be changing the manufacturing process of the 360 to 65nm either this year or next and the moment that happens, there will be few to no red rings on new 360s. (just google xbox 360 + 65nm)
So chances are they're actually only going to lose $100~200 million, not $1 billion.
More importantly, if the PS3 only drops this $100 (I'm beginning to suspect / hope it'll be 100 until the 5 blue-rays thing ends, then 150/200) - then the ball is in MS's court. If they take even $50 off across the board, then they've got Sony on the ropes this generation (until those huge, hopefully exclusive *** games come out).
Finally, to put this in perspective, a $100 price drop still leaves the PS3 $30 above the Elite. Further more, if MS drops that, they'll be up to $100 above the elite. Looking at the games, no average consumer will go for the PS3 rather than the 360 at that stage.
So yes, lets just hope - for Sony's sake - that they play this a tad smarter. (if only to keep things under wraps better so the competition doesn't get a preemptive opportunity)
Good news, but I hope (and don't think) it's applicable to Australia too.
I don't care when the price drop comes, but I really want one before GTAIV.
after reading the article i guess sony isn't droping the price after all. guess it was a curcuit city promo to move there stock v-vega75I think more sources are hitting the net with proof of a $100.00 drop... no I don't have links right now, but I've come across a few, which seems like more than enough to prove (to me at least) that it's not just a CC sale. I don't need one, but it's good news for those who don't have one yet... I guess.

Great news indeed. Why do all of the fanbois have to jump in and throw in their "not enough" attitude and just be happy that Sony is trying to make their powerful and feature-filled console more affordable to most people?
Sure it won't "be enough" to suddenly catapult them to 1st in sales, that's possibly what 2008-2010 is for when they drop it to $299-399, but at least this will help out a lot to compete with the 360 in NA sales. Hopefully they'll break 150k per month again because Sony has a lot of great games on their systems and I want to see them do well.
