It is odd to me that Sony keep denying it. This must be the worst kept secret ever. Obviously ruins their E3 press conference a little bit too which is probably why they are still in denial mode. cakeorrdeath

Mmmm, not really a big deal is it?
I mean, we all know Sony will announce a price drop at E3. It's not going to be a surprise. I think they're going to make a huge deal over it for sure but I'm certain they know that everyone's expecting it, so they won't focus on it as much as the games, since that's what people want to see and they know that.

Well pretty much that is Sony's biggest announcement you know. That and the PSP redesign

No. Circuit city jumped the gun but the announcement was almost certainly to come at E3.

I think it was going to be a bid deal, people thought there might be one but they weren't sure. Saying at the confrence "oh and by the way there is a $100 price cut tomorrow" would certianly have created some huge buzz.

Poor Sony... speed helped me get some great deals on games, and between his leaks and some friends on LJ, my sister's Wii was located. I would still hold that there is a possibility Circuit City really slipped up in their ad, but I guess we'll have to wait until other retailer's ads (or E3) to get a 100%. It would take a lot of the wind out of their sails if everyone already knew, though $100 off the PS3 doesn't take it to as low a price range as $100 of the 360 or $100 off the Wii would have done for those systems.I would still hold that there is a possibility Circuit City really slipped up in their ad, but I guess we'll have to wait until other retailer's ads (or E3) to get a 100%. subrosian
They have jumped the gun even further and are already selling it for $499 in some stores now, so it isn't just some misprint.

Nice, I love how some retailers will do that - the ironic thing about being a gamer is that the "non-gamer centric" stores like Target, Walmart, and Circuit City do a better job of messing up in our favor than the "gaming" stores.

It is silly of them to continue to deny the price drop, the might as well put this small slip up behind them. I think if sony announces the price drop and has an impressive showing of games E3, then I will be satisfied.I think it's time for lemmings to admit defeat in the Format war, face it, you have a $200 paperweight hooked up to your Xbox 360's.
A $100 price drop that makes the cheapest Blu-Ray player even cheaper, 5 free Blu-Ray movies for the next 2 & a half months, are going to push more than a few million PS3's and make potential buyers out of people who intended on never using their PS3 as a BR Player.
Don't forget also, that this will indeed push 360 owners over the edge who are fed up with the 3 Red Lights.

how did cc jump the gun? the ad is for next weekend. sony "were" suppose to announce a price drop at e3 next week before that ad comes out. don't blame cc for the leak blame the person who leaked the ad.
there has been reports even in this thread on the last page by people who claim target has already starting selling the ps3 at the new price. so cc has not really jumped the gun if anything target has.

No sir, Sony has already dropped the price on the BDP S300 to $499. Slightly better than Samsung model at $509.
The PS3 is not the cheapest BluRay player anymore and it never will be again. Rest assured that if the PS3 goes to $499 someone else's standalone BluRay player will be sub-$400 within weeks.
It is great for the consumer. But by Christmas the BluRay player will be a nice to have inclusion on the PS3 and not a strategic advantage... as the price for standalone units will continue to fall faster than the price of the PS3.
It's Capitalism :) ain't it great?

Wait your talking stand alone blu ray players?Last time i checked they were dam near a 1k,the ps3 if people decide to use it just to watch movies then 600 is a steal. But for the Gamers that want it just for games they'd rather have the ps3 at least at 499 if not a little bit less.[QUOTE="SUD123456"][QUOTE="FrenziedRaldo24"]A $100 price drop that makes the cheapest Blu-Ray player even cheaper, 5 free Blu-Ray movies for the next 2 & a half months, are going to push more than a few million PS3's and make potential buyers out of people who intended on never using their PS3 as a BR Player.

You can already buy a standlaone Sony BluRay player for $499, and a Samsung one for $509. Within a few months they will bea lot cheaper even than that. And by Christmas the first sub-$300 units will be available.
You...like most people...are already way out of date on BluRay player pricing.

LMAO. Logic FTW!!!
Yessirreee, the consumers looking to buy a cheap BluRay player find the PS3 at $599 a steal....
Cause they are too stupid to buy the cheaper standalone $499 player :)
Yessirr, cause it is a well known fact that consumers when faced with a choice will choose the higher pricedoption...just like they do in game consoles....oh...wait...my bad :) ...maybe they aren't that dumb.
The point is that the PS3 is no longer the cheapest BluRay player, and in fact, you can buy a standalone Sony unit for less. Indeed, the prices of standalone units are going to crater....
Meaning that by Christmas, the PS3 having a BluRay player will be a nice to have....but it will not compete with standalone BluRay players....meaning there will be no motivation for peopleprimarily interested in movies to buy a PS3.
Get it? It isn't that complicated.

Lesson Learned: Don't buy expensive consoles at launch time unless they have lots of good launch titles or you can re-sell it on eBay for a good profit.
Meh, that only applies to the people who payed $599+ tax for there 60GB PS3, I only payed $500 for my 60GB.
Dont have much to say to that except:
Customer is faced with two options, buy a standalone BD player (lets say its 400 dollars) or a Ps3, for 500 dollars. Hmmm..... I COULD get the one that just plays movies, OR the one that plays games, has 60gb storage, can upscale regular DVD's very well and acts as a DLNA server.... hmmmmmmmmmKinitari
You and I are likely to do the same thing...buy the PS3. But that is because we value those other things. My wife? Absolutely not. She would buy the standalone...as would my sister...or my parents...or...or.....you get the point.
Why?, because they are not interested in a game console...they are just interested in playing movies.....those other features are only benefits if you care about them...so why pay $100 more (for example), even if that would be a great deal considering all else you get.
All I am saying is that the logic of: PS3 is cheapest BluRayplayer = more PS3 sales, is over already, or will be in months if not weeks.
So, we are going to move:
from.....buy a cheap BluRay player and get a machine that plays games thrown-in
to.........buy a game console and get a cheap BluRay player thrown in
Eventually we will move to:
Buy a game console, get a BluRay player thrown in.....meh, so what?, I can buy a better BluRay player for $50. It is inevitable.
$100 cut will be great for bluray buyers looking for that player for their hd sets. As for mass market consumers for gaming, well it isn't enough. I have always said that the 1st part of the year for the ps3 was to push bluray movies and gaming second. That is still the case. Yes, that will change late this year and greatly next, however, it still remains that the push is for bluray movies 1st.
For the system to rocket off in sales they will need to be $399 and eventually $249 for it to really take off in retail. Consumers will wait until they see a major price cut and $100 isn't it.

i agree but it is still a good deal though. you can buy a ps3 for $500 and get 5 free blu rays right now. hell you could just sale the blu rays on ebay to get some of your money back. i seriously wished i had not have bought my ps3 back in december.

Actually,If you think about it?For those who have those gift cards for those stores it will actually cost them less.Whether the price for the ps3 gets cut or not. it doesn't matter it still wont sell. said angelreborn8
Well, lets change the title...
I think the $80 Model is a pretty sweet deal as far as PS3s go, coming with 20GB and Motorstorm. It's still too pricey for me to warrent a purchase though. Even at $500, it's still hurtin' considering what's out. Hopefully, Sony'll convince me that their line-up is worth it. Three days...
My 2 cents:
This price drop isnt gonna change a thing. It still has the disadvantage of being the highest priced console ou there. I dont see Microsoft following suit unless there is a significant change in sales, which I doubt. Either way, Halo 3 will be a killer when it is released. Weird really, When the 360 was released I had my mind set that I would wait and buy a ps3. The ps3 was released..I waited a few weeks, Looked(s) like sony s in some real trouble, I bought a wii and waited awhile longer. Too late for Sony cause I just bought a 360 (which I have decided is the superior console of this gen. If Sony really wants to make up some ground, they need to release a NON - bluray model(there problem IMO was pushing that bluray crap to begin with) with a much more moderate price , than they may see a boost in sales. Fior the majority of people that dont own HDTV, that bluray is collecting dust.
ps3 time!!!!!!!
its time the ps3 destorys the wii in sales.
tree-branch
Then the sheep will have nothing.:D
I thought I would add this.
"If the PS3 price drop does come on July 15, the system will have spent 236 days at its initial price. For historical comparison, the PS2 took 565 days to drop from $299 to $199, while the original PlayStation took 250 days and the original Xbox took 181 days to make similar drops. The GameCube took 176 days to drop from $199 to $149 while the Dreamcast took 245 days to likewise fall. On July 15, the Xbox 360 will have gone 600 days without a price drop in North America."

Only problem with having one without a blue-ray drive is the games are made on BDs and it'd be immpossible to play games on it.

My theory as to why Sony waited on the price drop and Sony's marketing theory:for the gamers who really want a PS3 early on, will pay 600 dollars for one, but they knew a lot of people wouldn't pay that, so when their sales went down, they put the price down, and soon we will see 1-2 million more sales, then it will slow down again, then they will drop the price again, and so on until it's cheap. That is just my theory though.Does anyone feel annoyed or angry that they have bought theirs for more, and now others can get it for $100 less?ShmenonPie
I was going to say the same thing, especially since the faithful haven't exactly been inundated with games to play.
When MS did this with the Xbox, I was given £115 back in goods. I got 3 games and an additional controller. Will Sony do similar?
60gb for $499 is alright. But another $100 for 20gb? MS added another 100gb to the 360 Elite and didn;t make quite such a drastic dollar-to-gig price.
I also lol at Jack Trenton when he announced this in a video and said it would help consumers take advantage of the wide range of downloads available for PS3
