60gb for $499 is alright. But another $100 for 20gb? MS added another 100gb to the 360 Elite and didn;t make quite such a drastic dollar-to-gig price.
I also lol at Jack Trenton when he announced this in a video and said it would help consumers take advantage of the wide range of downloads available for PS3

All that's added is 20gb - which costs all of a few extra dollars to add - and they can now charge a $100 premium. The existance of the 80gb unit means Sony is still thinking with the same mindset "let's charge as much as we can to the high end consumers, who have to have something simply because it's the high end."
This is exactly what MS did with the Elite - the difference being that Sony didn't do enough to distinguish the 80gb PS3. I suppose they fear a backlash from early adopters, and weren't willing to make something like a white 80gb PS3 so early in the lifecycle of the system.
The Motorstorm & 80GB bundle is a horrible value. With the cash you save by buying the 60GB Model, you could buy a HDD online thats 50%+ bigger than the 80GB. I bet Sonys almost breaking even on the high-end model, because it definitely isnt a logical way to spend the extra $100.
The worst part about the new model is that the casual will still look at PS3 as a $600 system, which has been hurting the PS3 here in the US since day one. They should have stuck just with that Sku, better yet, as much as I hate the 20GB, I would have rather seen that return at $399.99 or $429.99 as the alternative.

Casuals won't buy a $500 system any more than they'll buy a $600 system, the only people it makes a difference to are people who were already looking at the PS3, and now suddenly see it as even more of a value.subrosianThis part was unnecessary, as the casual consumer is so hard to identify, but I completely agree with this part. This won't draw too many new wallets in, just those that were already sorely tempted.

I disgree. I believe the Motorstorm pack-in distinguishes itself from the 60GB model.
heh.....I bought my 60GB PS3 at BestBuy with the 2yr warranty. I will be returning that PS3 for the new $600 model. I knew holding off on buying motorstorm would work out.

It's going to come bundled with Motorstorm, which is $60, So it's not that bad :P
A good move by Sony, but it isn't going to do much to stop the bleeding. The biggest issue is the lack of games to play on that $5-$600 system. Dropping it $100 doesn't make it much more appealing at all.
I'm sure Microsoft is breathing a huge sigh of relief that the cheapest PS3 is still more expensive than the Elite. I don't see Microsoft needing to drop prices for a while. They've got the better games and the better price range.
yall can spin this any way you want
this will drive sales of the ps3 tremendously, and especially at xmas

I really doubt Microsoft is just going to wait around for Sony to catch up in sales. I think a price drop is coming for the 360 as well, a $100 price drop for the 360 would put it closer to being able to compete with the Wii. Microsoft has the best games, but the Wii still has that "fad" appeal going on, everyone wants one.

While Microsoft is "waiting around" they are killing Sony in sales. They've got the games and the better price, and it will stay that way for a long time. It's going to take a lot more than a $100 price drop to help Sony overtake the 360.
I'm not sure how concerned Microsoft is with the Wii. They've got the Core package which is only $50 more and are taking a much different approach to gaming with the online and HD capabilities.
I don't think this is really a price drop its more like a hard drive upgrade. A $499 60 gig PS3 is the sweet spot but introducing the 80 gig is another Sony blunder. When people walk into a store they will still see the $500 and $600 price tag for a gaming console and will still think that's too much for a gaming console.
A real price drop is always good for any system but this PS3 "price drop" won't help Sony alot. I do think having hdmi cable, a headset, and sixaxis rumble in the package would've really had more appeal than this $100 "price drop".
The 80 gig bundled with Motorstorm is a mistake. They say the 80 gig is for people that will watch or download HD movies, but if they don't include a hdmi cable in the box all this Sony business move would've been all for nothing.
In reality there is no PS3 price cut. They started out with$499 and $599 models, now they have $499 and $599 models. Where's the price cut?
does the 80gb sku come with anything else apart from motorstorm?cuz not every1 is a racing fanwiistation360
No, I don't think so. Some HD cables or a headset would have been nice.

We are essentially back at square one. The PS3 is still $500-600 its not really a price drop at all really but a hard drive upgrade ( which honestly isnt even needed). This is the same thing as the 20Gb model and the 60Gb model and I dont see how this will increase demand to be honest.
What will increase demand hopefully is the games coming out for it but with the games coming out for 360 (we know what those are) and the titles coming for the Wii those will most likely see an increase demand more so than the PS3 I think. The 80Gb model is just as stupid as the the elite and really is not needed at all...lets see if MS does a price drop or bundle with core or the premium
So are cows going to admit ownage here about what is going on if all is true?
I mean I remember the insanity after the Elite however the 360 Premium was never changed in price after a year or less than I should say.
Now all you people who bought a PS3 how can you not be pissed off??
If they are doing a $100 price drop that's one thing to be upset about but on top of that. With the same money you paid for the 60GB PS3 other people will not get 20GB more plus a free motorstorm game.
IMO that would piss me the hell off. Sony should do something for those who bought the PS3 before IMO

I never thought about it that way. IMO they should have worked on getting the 20GB out for $400 as quick as possible.
People are confused.Ok $600 = bundle package.
$499 = the main package for most people.
More then likely the $500 price.well actually cheaper then 499 if you count useing gift cards.I honestly think the 60gb will sell more then the 80gb.
This is like going to a car dealership and even though the lot has top of the line(fully lodaded car versons) people go with whats in their best price range. They could buy a lower verson of the car and add features later.

lol seriously I might of consider getting a 20gb ps3 for 400 once games like MGS,Tekken, SOCOM,R&C came out.

Cut down to £247?????
That's good. Better than the 360 in fact 0_0
Although MS are likely to announce a 360 price drop, and Sony will probably lose tons from dropping it to this price, it'll be bound to sell much better. My patience may have payed off :D
[edit]It appears IGN messed up a little on that one. The PS3 is £425 and the exchange rate is around $2.01 to £1. $100=£50, NOT £200.

Didn't we ALREADY have an option (in the past) to buy a $499 PS3 and NOBODY bought it back then. What suddenly makes Sony think that people are going to be jumping over each other to buy a $499 PS3 now?
They should have kept the old $499 PS3 around, cut ITS price to $399 and you may be onto something. Having a $499 and a $599 PS3 just sounds like deja vu all over again...

EXACTOMONDO. Who the heck cares about stuff you don't need? The things you actually want and will use (like he said, cables, a headset, etc.) it didn't come with.
Regardless, do you think that Grandma and Grandpa care about all that crap? No. They care about the price and this is where Sony is getting eaten alive - and will continue to be eaten alive - by the bottom line. The 360 (rag on it as much as you want) still has the Core pack that comes in under $300. No matter how you slice it, you can still play every 360 game on the Core system. Cut the Core pack down to $250, and MS may start to pull in some of those potential Wii buyers as well.
It will be really interesting to see the efffect on sale this has. The Ps3 has already been $500 so I still wonder if it was the feature set or the price keeping buyers away from the old 20gb model.
The 80gb model just seems bizzare to me. Were people in anyway bothered by the PS3's HD size?
I think they will see an increase in sales, however it won't be gamers making up that shift, it will be home theater fans looking for a deal on a blu ray player with several kool features.
I expect 15,000 more units per month until sept just because of that.
The next thing is who will buy that bundle for motorstorm (the biggest gaming disappointment I have ever experience and the reason why I no longer get too hyped about unreleased games) and 20 extra gigs.
Also expect them to release their movie and music download service soon...

Honestly, it's confusing to me how Sony keeps failing to include HD cables or a headset, and how MS refuses to add wifi to their machine.
They keep changing the price and adding HD space, but these simple, rather inexpensive components to have a complete machine... ?

You don't have to get ps3 brand hdmi cables.I think thats where most people get confused.they think it has to be sony branded hdmi cable's when they really don't have to have that particular branded cable?*correct me if im wrong*Same goes for headsets as well.Unforgiven2870
Well, I think that's possibly a reason why they don't include a headset. Why supply one, when people are going to find their own. The HDMI cables are rather cheap if you can find them, but Sony would have to supply their own, so I don't know if that's a problem(of course, I would like for them to include it).

You are right I got an off branded hdmi cable (still wasn't cheap and not free) and I already had a blu tooth headset for my cell. I felt sorry for my friend as he didn't have neither. He still doesn't have the headset yet.
lol, the subject line of this thread changes almost twice a day. If the X360 cuts it's price you have to post it here now? What if X360 comes out with a new sku, will I have to post it here too?darthogre
We'll see tomorrow, won't we? With the newly announced Falcon chipsets, I think a price-cut is iminent.
