Good to see that MS has decided to offically confirm that this thing is going to be one of the biggest flailures the gaming industry has ever seen.
We'll see. People thought the same of the PS3 after it launched at $600. The biggest hardware failures (at least in the U.S.) were the 32X and the Virtual Boy. I doubt the Kinect will have that kind of failure. There are too many people and developers interested in it. Millions of gamers also thought the Wii would fail miserable. We saw how that turned out. If Kinect is priced at $150 then it's not going to do as well as Microsoft hopes. Many people will not see the justification for spending that much on what is essentialy a hightech webcam. Drop the price down to $70 and it will start doing well in some respects, but I dont believe it will be mainstream where most games end up supporting it. Kinect will most likely be a niche market that may only account for 10%-15% of all Xbox 360 owners. The reason the PS3 and Wii didn't fail was because they were full blown consoles, not an expensive attachment. Yeah.. but they were still expensive for what they offered and the PS3 did not start out strong, until the price dropped. Same thing could happen with Kinect as well, just like you said. I don't think it'll fail as much as people think though. Might take a year or so, and a price drop for it to take off. It'll depend on the software as well. The same goes with the PS3 MOVE too.MS needs to include all the Kinect games they demonstrated at E3. This isn't Move where it will work with a bunch of games you might have, or are gonna buy whether you own Move or not.
Kinectimals is cool, but not worth $50-60 by any means. Same with Kinect Adventure and Sports. They need to pack these games in with Kinect for $150 or I won't even consider purchasing it.
Eh, Microsoft are never gonna bundle that much software with this peripheral.MS needs to include all the Kinect games they demonstrated at E3. This isn't Move where it will work with a bunch of games you might have, or are gonna buy whether you own Move or not.

But really the games are ridiculously simplistic even from a casual gaming perspective, with the exception of probably Dance Central and its Konami clone.
Kinectimals seems to consist of holding up your arms to pet the virtual feline, having the virtual feline mimic what you do, and racing your virtual pet through an obstacle course by running on the spot and jumping over hurdles.
All I've seen of Kinect Sports is running on the spot and jumping over hurdles.
All I've seen of Kinect Adventures is leaning on the spot and jumping either in a boat or in a mine cart. And the brickbreaker game which has been shown to death.
For all the touting of the technology, the gameplay mechanics are generic as.

but still, they will only include 1 or 2 games, any more wouldnt be good, no company in there right mind would do that, if you dont like kinect why dont you use the other different verisons of it, since its clearly cheap to make. give kinect more time, the PS3 didnt have amazing games when it launched and look at it now, and the Wii pretty much had Wiisports, better stuff will come out.
...this wasnt towards you, but the first guy

I was surprised to see the games being sold seperately. They looked like a big pack-in compilation when I first saw them. I was under the impression that MS wanted to push this thing, but at $150 with no games it doesn't exactly have mass-market appeal.
I'm not sure what they're thinking of selling these games for, but right now it's looking like you can get a Wii with 2 Kinect Sports level games for the same price as you can get Kinect and 1 game. Seriously disappointed with MS at this point. I thought it would be cool to get Kinect for my family this holiday, but I've lost almost all interest now that I've seen the price.

theres no way they will launch kinect without a game, mostly likely it would be the sports pack, but ya, I wonder what they are waiting for. but like even microsoft xbox webcam had a free game that you could download, and it worked with the cards games. microsoft would be digging a whole if they didnt bundle a game
I was just watching Nightly News with Brian Williams and they mentioned and showed the Kinect, as they showed Health News right after. Looks like Kinect is "connecting" with a certain demographics, parents and kids, families. I haven't seen or notice any news about the other recent motion controller yet.

If Kinect captured even 10% of the Wii-Fit demo they would cream themselfs.
Move will only gain share by a major developer investing time and effort into it... something only Nintendo and now Sony can really do with first party support (IMO).
all the talk and all the hype. Sony Move might be good, but it has no where near the hype or interest level that Kinect does. Say what you want but MS is definitely doing their job w/ marketing compared to Sony.
It wasn't even a tech demo. It was pre-recorded footage of a girl talking off a script to a tv showing a pre-rendered scene. It was even faker than the fake stuff they showed at this years e3 (if you don't know what I'm talking about there, you obviously haven't noticed the countless gifs people have in their sigs showing the negative lag that all the kinect demos had). It's pretty obvious they didn't show anything like Milo this year because they realized it is out of the scope of what Kinect can actually do.Is the pedophile simulator shown at E3 09 actually coming out?
i got the impression it was just a tech demo.

Voice recognition software that can recognize a pre-defined set of commands ("Xbox: play", "Xbox: pause", etc.) is one thing (and even then, anyone that uses those automated voice activated phone services that banks and stuff have knows that those systems are far from perfect. "Check balance" "I'm sorry, I didn't understand that, did you say 'transfer funds'? Please say yes or no.") Being able to have a conversation with a machine that undeerstands anything you say AND is able to formulate its own responses in order to carry on conversation, that's a little more advanced. That's called sentient AI, and it's not something we're going to see from a video game anytime soon.
its big news that Kinect is outselling MOVE already and by a big margin, so much for thinking Kinect would be a fail, lot of crow to be eaten.

I find it odd that you and the guy bumping threads started posting today at the same time.
Anyway,
Yay kinect!
To prevent and put a stop to the flood of topics about Kinect. This is the purpose of stickied threads, they're there to prevent the board from becoming flooded with a multitude of similar discussions. Why is this stickied?

Agreed. It's hard to get the masses excited for Move when it is essentially just Wii HD. With that said, if Kinect doesn't get its problems sorted I don't expect it too have much legs. Marketing can make a successful launch, but negative word of mouth may ultimately make it fail.all the talk and all the hype. Sony Move might be good, but it has no where near the hype or interest level that Kinect does. Say what you want but MS is definitely doing their job w/ marketing compared to Sony.

lol lems hyping sales sheep now hyping games never thought I would see this!GiancarIt was even funnier to see the Press Conferences at E3. Microsoft going Casual, Nintendo showing core games, and Sony showcasing multiplatform games, and touting exclusive DLC. lol. What has the world come too.
Well the other threads did cover most of what people have managed to decipher through the shroud of mystery Microsoft seems to want to keep around Kinect.Funny how all the Kinect debates ended after the sticky, it's like the quietest sticky ever...

But here's a wrap-up I guess:
It hits retail on November 4th, approx 4 months from now.
It is currently listed on Microsoft's online storefront at $149.99, which includes:
Kinect
Power supply
User manual
Wi-Fi extension cable
Don Mattrick has publically stated he knows what Kinect will eventually retail for, making the "placeholder" price seem bizarre.
-----
Kinect hardware specs:
480p 30Hz RGB camera
480p 30Hz CMOS camera
Infrared projector
4-microphone array
Motorised tilt
Combined with proprietary software
It has a reported manufacturing cost of $150.
Requirements/limitations:
Kinect has a voxel resolution of 4 cm cubed and tracks 20 joints using 10-15% of the 360's processing power.
Kinect has a lag of at least 150ms excluding display lag. Dependent upon the game.
Kinect has an optimal/required sensing distance of 6ft according to the Microsoft store. It can theoretically track between 2.4ft and 10ft.
-----
Can it's motion tracking function while sitting? Not currently?
"UPDATE: A Microsoft spokesperson told me after the publication of this article that the company is certain that Kinect gesture control will work for movies, ESPN and other "entertainment" features before the sensor is launched. As I originally reported, that is not an implemented feature yet. The spokesperson was not able to provide any update on the Kinect's tolerance of a person who sits while playing games."
There is a video of a Forza Kinect tech demo, where someone goes from an initial standing reference frame to a crouch and then returning to a standing reference frame. This does not necessarily imply that one can remain in a seated frame and utilise the tracking function.
-----
Can it track more than two-people? No one knows.
PrimeSense's technology, which Microsoft licensed in making Kinect, can only run calculations for two frames at a time. That doesn't necessarily reflect the final product. However, there've been no demonstrations of more than two players using the device.
A multiplatform game that supports four players on the Wii and PS Move, only supports two on Kinect.
-----
Can it recognise your voice specifically? No, not currently.
-----
Other:
It cannot track fingers.
It may have issues with wrist rotation.
It may lock onto something in the periphery instead of your body and remain locked on.
It may still have issues tracking darker colours, or alternatively doesn't track shiny things well. Or it's just buggy.
Oh I forgot to mention. It's also spawned like a dozen awesome gifs, as well as a comparison to a couch and a log.
Thanks for your obviously unbiased opinion.its big news that Kinect is outselling MOVE already and by a big margin, so much for thinking Kinect would be a fail, lot of crow to be eaten.

I feel more of a kinection then I had thought I would - pretty pumped to give it all a try though I'm certain to enjoy Reach a bunch more. :P

Kinect is the perfect example of how notto do something in gaming:
It's seems like Kinect tries to do what the Wii does, taking away everything that works.
I expect some serious fail.
Kinect is the perfect example of how notto do something in gaming:
- Try to catter an auddience another system already dominates. Little advice: play to your own strengths, not the other's.
- Overprice it (that's assuming that the $150 is true, which seems to be the case).
- Show no interesting software for it. (Like, not a single game :| )
- Show more interest in that add-on than in your own fanbase.
- Don't show if it's possible to use it on standard games. (FM3 does not count, that didn't look too good)

a simpler way of putting it: Microsoft is going into a red ocean with a blue ocean strategy
as in, they're heavily banking on novelty factor (to the tune of $150) in a soon-to-be crowded novelty market

Not exactly. Having limited conversations that involve things like telling it something it is programmed to expect, such as answering when it asks you your birthday, and having it decide on the appropriate out of a list of pre-programmed and pre-recorded responses is not really any different than what you get when you use a voice controlled automated phone system. It is nowhere near the level of AI as what would be required to be able to have a real conversation with an artificial entity like the "demo" they showed of Milo last year.[QUOTE="88mphSlayer"]

i wouldn't mind asking random questions to a character like Legion in Mass Effect tho, i think that'd be fun - even if the total # of pre-programmed responses wasn't that much
so this is kinect? an excercise game based on motion controls using a camera? an old ps2 game? say it ain't so. before natal. before wii fit. the only question now is will sony release kinect 2? imagine the porblems it will cause on amazone and ebay. everyone getting the wrong product mailed to their home.
