Onlive will never replace PC gaming

mitu123

OnLive is a bigger threat to console gaming than it is to PC gaming. PC gamers are willing to pay for the very best, they'll not settle for something like OnLive for the sake of simplicity. Console gamers on the other hand can very easily move to something like OnLive, if they have a good network connection that is. And if OnLive establishes partnerships with ISPs so that TV boxes come preinstalled with an OnLive player, that could have a severe impact on the console business. Or if they partner with Samsung, LG or other TV manufacturers so that the TV comes with an OnLive app, that would be cool.

People would need faster connections to make it doable, and I'm sure not everyone wants to be online to game even for single player, we'll see.

I think it already is quite doable for SP games. I have a 30Mbps connection and was accessing UK servers from Portugal, and had no noticeable lag. FPS games felt a bit unprecise but I'm used to gaming with a mouse, maybe with a controller it would be ok.

[QUOTE="RyviusARC"][QUOTE="Rikusaki"]Yeah. It's definitely clearer than that on my end. And something is wrong with those framerates. OnLive runs much smoother for me. I also see some screen tearing in games that don't have screen tearing when I play them. :?Loegi
Liar. I live really close to an Onlive server. I have a really good connection. What you see in my videos is the best you can get. If you think you can do better how about you record some gameplay of one of the games I did and upload it to youtube.

Apparently there is an Onlive server in Luxembourg, and I get 6.94mb/s down and 1.05mb/s up to Luxembourg, live quite close by, and still get 480p at max. So yeah.

Ew, 480p, haven't gamed on that res in a PC game since...over a decade.:P

Yeah, it would just be the exact same stream. Unless you have a phone capable of decompressing it fast enough it's going to the same. And on a smaller screen, the blurriness would be less, or at least less noticeable. I really hope it's the android app, almost seems like Onlive was made for phones

Seriously? I can see the fun in playing Saints Row 3, or Dirt 3, or Just Cause 2 on my phone whenever I got a free moment. You should be able to play it at a wifi hotspot too.

That could be a serious problem. But I think one of the main reasons why they delayed this is because they were thinking about the controls. I'm guessing it would be some touch screen joy sticks and some on screen/of screen buttons. Would work for some simpler games.

Maybe you can use some kind of bluetooth controller? Kind of defeats the purpose of portability though, the Vita would be smaller...

It's not demanding when using Onlive since Onlive is not demanding other than requiring a lot of bandwidth.

Fraps is the issue sometimes (the hard drive used was slow). Some of those framerate drops are from OnLive's hardware, others were from Fraps. I was spectating the match during the recording and it was smoother than what was recorded.

OnLive is actually quite demanding on the CPU. It is at about 60% usage on my Core2Duo T7250 (the laptop the video was recorded on). On my Core i5 laptop, OnLive uses less than 10%. :)

Until I get a REALLY REALLY great connection, I'll start using it
