Call me lazy, but I really don't want to fiddle around with all those parts just to build a gaming PC. I just stick with the good ole consoles:)clubsammich91
You're lazy. Seriously thats hardly an excuse if you are a real gamer who spends a lot of time playing games and posting on forums using :o a computer! Unless you use the PS3 browser, which is bleh.

[QUOTE="Dilrod"] You don't get it do you? We are not talking about hardcore gamers. We are talking about gamers in general. In general a pc gamer will not hook up their pc to their tv, just because they can, doesn't mean they will. In real life most pc gamers use monitors, hence why monitors still sell so well. Why is it so hard to face these facts? I even venture to say that MOST people don't even know they could hook their pc up to their tv, yet even the most casual grandma wii gamer knows she hooks it up to her 19 inch 1998 tv and it works.

You're going to have a hard time proving that. If anything, it is nothing more than a stigma developed by this very industry. The fact of the matter is that PCs can easily hook up to televisions. I mean, I've spent more time deciphering the five headed peiceof crap hydra that is the RCA/COMposite adaptor for the PS3 and 360. Figuring out which RED was audio and which RED was video took me five times longer than plugging the s-video connector into the ONLY s-video slot which SAID "S-video in" underneath the dang plug in. People can hook their PC up to their TV. Forcing people to include the price of a monitor because you are unwilling to hook your PC up to your TV is disengenuous. I could be just as casuistic; My mom likes to watch Boston Legal on our big screen HDTV. Therefore, you must include the price of an HDTV in consoles because I don't have one I can currently use.

Except the PS3 is more futureproof than this PC.

And you forgot the disc drive and cooling, in addition to what other users are saying.

DAZZER7

please define future-proof as I hope you're not gonna start with the usual, "you're gonna need to upgrade in 6 months"

I think he means something along the lines of, if it does go the 10 years, it will play the new games 10 years from now while if you bought a PC it will be outdated by that time and while the console graphics get better with time PC is still hindered. For example try playing todays games with a geforce 2 series and windows 2000(Is windows 2000 even supported in games anymore?)

IF you're a student you can get it for free. If not, you're typing right now on a computer. You can transfer the product key. If you're unwilling to, 60-70 bucks on pricewatch.

No it doesn't. If it is by review scores you draw that conclusion you are wrong, if it is by volume you are wrong, if it is by fanbase you are wrong, if it is by sales you are wrong, if it is by how users rate those games you are wrong, if it is by cost you are wrong, if it is by backwards compatability you are wrong, if it is by any standard except your own opinion then you are wrong.

Thats a perfect excuse though. There are reasons why people choose the platforms that they choose to game on, and at the end of the day, a vast vast majority of people are only going to have a few of the platforms at best. Even the most core of core gamers probably does not play most games that come out, so sometimes you have to make sacrifices since we all have limited time and money.

If the excuse is not being bothered to assemble a computer which can take a mere 30 mins then I don't have much respect for this user's choice. If it was based on disinterest in the thousands of games on the PC then I'd respect that.

Clearly if it requires a marginal ammount learning, people won't want to do it, even if it will benefit you down the line.

But it seems implicit in most of these threads with "build a PC, beat a console" as the backbone. Makes that 41% stand right out there. :P

Putting a computer together is insanely easy. I've been putting together computers for everything except the CPU since I was 9 .. and, no, I was not some uber computer genius braniac. I just had my brother watch me as I do it. I put my first CPU in when I was 13.

Don't overestimate the difficulty of putting a computer together. But, worse case scenario, you takes your parts to Best Buy, CompUSA, or any other shop and have them put the components together for ~100$.

@adastos: PCs last longer than consoles. Fact. Both in terms of quality of parts and in terms of performance. A PC lasting longer than five years it quite common. A Console that lasts more than five years is very rare if it's used regularly.

This is so obvious that I'm not going to waste my time even explaining it to you. Just know.

Of course the Best Buy employees are idiots. They're teenagers. The same kind that work in fast food restaurants. But, luckily, I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about the GeekSquad... and they DO know what they're doing.

Hmmm.... I've never had to deal with them as I quit using BB long before they existed. It's good to know that they're finally hiring some competent techies.

Heh I was just trying to explain what the other guy meant also like I said it was a big exaggeration on my part. Of course PCs last longer, but I would assume that to keep playing at a good quality you would need to upgrade down the line. I'm not saying the PS3 will last 10 years, but if it does I would think down the line you would have needed to upgrade your PC at least once. So in the long run, and that is what we are talking about here the PS3 will be cheaper.

Consoles last about 5-7 years. I bought a budget PC back in 2005 (A few months before Xbox 360's release) and it played games very well up until about mid-2008. Again, I must remind this was a budget PC. A decently built PC will last much, much longer especially since consoles are holding back graphics. PCs will continue to last longer and longer.

After mail in rebates, total price is $295 for a computer with more power than any console. Even by upgrading the graphics card to play Crysis at high resolutions and details, it's still cheaper than a PS3. How are consoles still selling?

Well for one "new games" only refers to the games release date, not whether or not the game design itself is new. You can release a GameBoy game today and it will be new, that doesn't mean it looks and plays new. You only have to look to the PS2 to see the games are dramatically behind modern standard, of course it would be silly to suggest something that old can keep up with modern standards, but then the argument suggests that as well.

It talks about PC being outdated by time while consoles get better and better, this is actually suggesting a static console platform will keep progressing while a PC would have to keep upgrading in order to keep up. This is of course a ridiculous argument, while console hardware utilization/application does improve with time it doesn't allow you to surpass a PC equipped with recent tech.

It then uses a double standard by criticising a 10 year old PC's ability to run modern games, but does not place the same expectation on PS2; which cannot run modern games either. They are using the release date of the game to suggest modern, when of course the games are anything but modern.

Overall it is a silly argument.

PSU comes with the case, OS and KB+M comes from your old PC.

you are assuming that everyone will be able to re use parts for this. that is not part of the original and a PS3 comes fully equipped - you are fudging on the original claim. How about Mac user that is tired of it all and desires a PC? THEY can't re use a darn thing so they have NOTHING. you can't make assumptions.

That's a pretty bold and generalizing claim. You may think they suck, but in fact, they really don't.

I wouldn't say a particular console sucks, just that it doesn't appeal to me.

Are you kidding me? 9500GT? Dual core 3.0Ghz? No blu-ray drive? No OS? Crappy PSU included with the case? This barely even matches the 360...

And especially with "gaming" PC's that fall under $700, they often need to be updated in some way every 3 years. Where my PS3 doesn't need to be updated for like 6 years

Because the TC is comparing it to a ps3. If your going to compare, make it apples to apples, not apples to bananas.

And yes I can forget about mods..... I don't care about mods at all, never use them.... wouldnt care if they never existed.... by the time a good mod comes along, I'm ready to play a different game, not the same one with a different skin. I have never cared about mods and probably never will.

But what do MODS have to do with the discussion of price of systems?

Re-read what I wrote. I never said they were the same in price, but if you're going to include the price of a monitor for a PC you need to add the price of a TV for a console. Besides, I don't care what's more expensive inch for inch, the TV is going to end up costing you more. Mods = free games and content. You have to pay for that on a console.

And where did I say you need to add the price of a monitor to the price of buying a PC?

I was merely using myself as an example, I wanted a new Monitor, I didn't need one. Last year I wanted a new GPU so i got a 8800GT and replaced my 7900GTX, again not needed.... just wanted it.

If you're a gamer you aren't gonna be happy running all your games at low-med settings. The point is the cost of PC gaming is more, because you are constantly upgrading.

The longest I've ever had a PC without upgrading is 2 years. And even then, by the end of the 2 years I felt like I was falling behind. So you stick in some more RAM, replace the vid card, etc.

PC GAMING COSTS MORE THAN CONSOLE GAMING..... END OF STORY!

You used a monitor as an example of the expense of upgrading. Now you're backing off.

Except the PS3 is more futureproof than this PC.

And you forgot the disc drive and cooling, in addition to what other users are saying.

Disc drive cooling??!!! You don't need disk drive cooling. Are you being serious?

[QUOTE="psychobrew"][QUOTE="killab2oo5"]You forgot an OS,PSU, and KB+M.iowastate

Concider it a fine for choosing MAC in the first place. Besides, if they can afford a Mac, they can afford the extra $80 - $100 to get the rest of the parts they need.

Blu-ray drive? Why the heck would I need one for PC?

Because the TC is comparing it to a ps3. If your going to compare, make it apples to apples, not apples to bananas.

OK. Lets just pretend that I'm comparing a PS3 to a PC now so the Blue Ray drive is pointless.

Yes, and do you want me to name every single thing I can do with a PC that you can't do with a PS3???

Irregardless, you still need an optical drive of some sort.

This build will also not run anything for long without even a heatsink for the CPU; from the specs "Cooling device not included - Processor Only"

After that, you'd probably want some sort of input device as well as an OS so you can actually do something with the computer.

As for this,

After mail in rebates, total price is $295 for a computer with more power than any console.psychobrew

The only part with more "power" in this build is the PSU.

Just like you can't play any PC exclusives on the PS3, so the point is really a moot one.

And you can't play Mass Effect, Stalker, Gears of War, etc on that PS3.

Getting into a library comparison between the PC and PS3 is not going to help your case.

Optical drive... not an expensive blu-ray which is useless for PC gaming.

But, we could live without optical drive on the PC system... DD is strong enough.
