Casual Game portals and social networks being included in "PC gaming" is laughable. Seriously, give me a break. Talk about reaching.

Puckhog04

Reaching for what? Ignoring casual games and the MMO market completely, the PC STILL pulls in more retail/DD revenue than any other platform. This is not a difficult thing to see if you have the chart-reading skills of a 5th grader.

I wish they would've split console sales into distinct platforms so that all of these slow-ass people on System Wars wouldn't have to have this stuff explained to them. It's actually quite pathetic how dumb some people on here are. "Consoles" is not a single platform. It's five of them.

It's funny how when you present facts, people just don't listen. But that's system wars for you. Just admit that pc games do sell well. It's not like it makes the games better, which is what really matters.

Social Networks is not PC gaming, or rather, not a measure of PC gaming... neither is Casual Portals... techincally speaking. PC gaming loses in this comparison.

SUD123456

But the console numbers includes all their casual games among 5 systems

That isn't the point. All games count. But you don't need a PC to access casual gaming portals or social network gaming. So why are these categories considered PC gaming?

And that isnt the point--PC gaming by itself made more than each individual console on average (based on the chart)

Is that a joke? Even ignoring those things (which we really shouldn't), the PC is still one of the strongest platforms in terms of revenue, if not THE strongest. Learn how to interpret data.

I have to disagree somewhat. While there's no doubt a lot of uncertainty about the percise numbers, the overall trend is very clear. All areas of the games industry is growing at a very impressive rate... except for brick and mortar 'boxed' sales. They are declining at a very impressive rate. Last years numbers just serves to underline this further.

Alternatives to traditional brick and mortar sales are growing explosivly while brick and mortar is very rapidly going the way of video rental stores and the dodo bird. The thing here is that Consoles almost entirely rely on brick and mortar sales.

For a major industry segment to loose around 30% of it's market share in a single year, that's not fluxuation, it's a massive change to the nature of that industry. If you think that this trend is somehow going to reverse itself next years, that people who's increasingly stopped buying regular games and migrated to newer sources of gaming entertainment will suddently turn around and come back, then I think you are in for a surprise.

Mazoch

I think there is some room for hope in boxed sales, though. Just this past November, for example, NPD reported that software rose 4 percent to $1.46 billion compared to November 2009. [link]

This research is also somewhat fishy. Nintendo and NPD's estimates for overall console revenue in 2009 vs 2010 do show a decline, but only a relatively minor one (just ~$400 million; this was by no means uniform, though, because the PS3 & 360 showed strong gains). This was from Nintendo's investor report re: US software revenue...

Estimated Software Revenue

After reading this topic i notice that people need to go back to school and learn some math.

Console fans: the pc did not outsell the consoles its all lies! LIES I TELL YOU. Casual games for PC do not count! Lets forget that there are console games that are casual... lets forget that it include DLC AND that its split betwen 5 consoles.

But i agree... PC is a dying platform!

I dont know about you, but I've always seen the sub culture that is PC gaming as being the most 'hardcore' (in its truest sense in the gaming world) out of any type of gaming. Hermits should be ashamed that they will readily accept all this social networking crap as PC gaming just so they can say 'lol we sell more than consoles!'

The God of PC gaming is looking down at you guys in shame.

Like someone else said. Accepting a fact and saying "hey i like it" are different things. And EVEN if you remove casual and social network... PC still outsell the consoles. And its in the land of the consoles so to speak. And that is even with them giving it another edge by including DLC in the chart.

Wow that is so right. Like all of these gamers are here with us talking about farmville. Like they are our brothers or somthing. No. So called hermits take the total sales of PC and everthing componets and what not and then compare this to consoles and their accessories. Like consolites don't use PC's at all. Just not right.

Ironic, the "PC games don't sell" and "PC is dying" stereotypes have been utterly debunked with one single pie chart and all people can say is hermits play sales.

You're only saying that because the pie chart doesn't make differentiations between hardcore and casual games and just says "consoles", and you are quick to point your finger towards the PC for being the only victim of such differentiation.

If you made a reality check and realized how many console games fall under the casual flag, that 43% would dwindle down to what, 8-9%?

That is a crazy percentage, especially in the US, where the PC is at it's weakest. It blows my mind how anyone can say PC gaming is dying when time after time we get reports, like this, showing the exact opposite.

KalDurenik

According to this very research firm that everyone seems to have accepted, console software revenue make up a larger percentage of overall game sales in countries such as the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Belgium and France than in the United States. (Didn't you guys scroll down and see those other charts?)

I find it funny people call the United States console land. The real console land is Japan. That's where all the consoles but 1 originate from, and that's a place where the PC market is very, very weak.

Yeah, you're right, but "loling" at you per say. It's expected that people are going to react the way they are in this thread (whether or not they can read a chart - that's subjective), it's more of the fact at how serious you're taking it. Also, whenever anyone who seems credible is trying to make a point, it gets shot down apparently because they can't read a pie chart (seemingly only few in here can do - but that's for a different place and time). I think people get it, PC sales are still strong and is it really that surprising? But make a few more posts about it to be sure, and I'm sure somebody is going to say I'm somehow hurt too. Matter of the fact is I'm not, I'm playing more games on my computer than on my consoles as of right now anyway. That's more of a money matter though.

But hey, I like my casual flash games on the PC, thank you very much! What else would I be doing in school? I shudder to think, literally.

Well statics show that US is the console land so to speak... If the PC outsell the console in its own home area... How do you think it do in other places where the PC market allways have been larger?

SakusEnvoy

According to this very research firm that everyone seems to have accepted, console software revenue make up a larger percentage of overall game sales in countries such as the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Belgium and France than in the United States. (Didn't you guys scroll down and see those other charts?)

I find it funny people call the United States console land. The real console land is Japan. That's where all the consoles but 1 originate from, and that's a place where the PC market is very, very weak.

Yeah but then again in Germany, Easter Europe and Korea and China pc gaming is much bigger ( in the chart pc gaming in Germany is 60% ). Also the console number is divided by 5 platforms and people tend to ignore this as if MS,Sony and Nintendo share their stocks Also from the chart i think the console land here is UK

You do realise the overwhelming amount of companies that combine to make what you call PC gaming? No one company owns PC gaming, just like no one company owns console gaming, so ya know, what you just said is silly.

Uuummm.. it includes MMO subscriptions. LOL!! Game consoles don't have MMO subscriptions. That is like $120+ each year for per person. That's the only reason it's as high as that. Console beats PC in game sales, period.

Look at the box retail and it's 10 billion console to 2.1 for PC.

blackace

To be fair, you have to factor in the 2.5b for digital downloads...which you can see is surpassing box titles. Digital is the way of the future.

So its more like 2:1 software sales for consoles.

Even if you took Digital Downloads 2.5 and box retail 2.1 billion, it's still a lot lower then Console software sales. Sales are down 29% for console software. Once the economy recovers, it'll be up to 20 billion a year easily. The only thing saving PC gaming is STEAM and MMO's. If that genre ever ceases PC gaming will plummet. I'm surprised people still have money to pay for those high price subscriptions.

So MMOs dont count as games now?

So again I'll ask, what would that graph have looked like in 94? Don't backtrack now, stick with your convictions and tell us what you meant by that comment. I have a feeling most sane people reading this thread will be "lol"ing when they read it though...

Yeah, you're right, but "loling" at you per say. It's expected that people are going to react the way they are in this thread (whether or not they can read a chart - that's subjective), it's more of the fact at how serious you're taking it. See, here is my problem. The term "elitist" is thrown around here almost every single time a PC gamer happens to correct a console-only gamer. It happens all the time, and time and time again, posters on this forum give it to us telling us that PC gaming is dying. Yet every time someone backs up that it's not, like the OP, the amount of posters who flat out refuse to accept what was shown, and instead try to change the argument by taking away this or that point (like MMO's for example) is absurd. Ignorance is king on this forum, and I'm going to call it out for what it is. I wish more people did, because this forum is a shambles. Proper knowledgeable discussions are a rarity here, and that's because people accept the stupidity of these posters, instead of calling a spade a spade, telling them their full of crap, and sending them to the nearest point of reference, like the facts on the pie chart that so many conveniently ignore. How many posts have you read on this thread laughing at the figures because they include facebook games, when the chart clearly points out that minus these divisions, the PC sector is as strong if not stronger than any single console? What's the point of discussing things when people ignore the facts in order to push their pro-ps3/360/wii/pc/whatever bias?

Wow console only gamers are in damage control mode. They see the evidence but are still trying to attack hermits. The pc is dead, there are no games and the games that hermits have don't sell

The level of ignorance consolites have toward pc gaming is titanic.

Telling people the truth about them is considered an offense on these boards. Gotta love the mods for their fine work, huh.

Casual Game portals and social networks being included in "PC gaming" is laughable. Seriously, give me a break. Talk about reaching.

But the console numbers includes all their casual games among 5 systems

That isn't the point. All games count. But you don't need a PC to access casual gaming portals or social network gaming. So why are these categories considered PC gaming?

Its not like exclusives, its about revenue. Even you admitted that almost all of it is from the PC. A tiny minority of phones may be able to access them, even the most die-hard consolite PC-hater has to admit that they contribute a negligble amount to the total.

That is a crazy percentage, especially in the US, where the PC is at it's weakest. It blows my mind how anyone can say PC gaming is dying when time after time we get reports, like this, showing the exact opposite.

kozzy1234

Exactly......I dont see where all this pc gaming is dying propaganda comes from.

Well it's quite simple really. Noone owns PC gaming so there's no one company spending millions of dollars on advertising and promotion of the platform. Some people think that what the ads are telling them are true, that their console is the bestest thing ever and that everything else is crap. So when a chart like that tells them the truth, they can't accept it and go back into their own virtual reality. It's sad, but what can you do.

What's the point of discussing things when people ignore the facts in order to push their pro-ps3/360/wii/pc/whatever bias? FGMPR

As I've said above, noone is advertising PC gaming so that burden falls on us, the PC gamers. We have to be here to spread the word about the wonderful world of PC gaming, to uncover the lies and expose people to the truth, whether they like it our not. It doesn't matter that a fraction of console fanboys will refuse to see the truth, not all people are like that. Others may see your post and think "well maybe I should try PC gaming, all these people can't be wrong". Don't equate everyone to the miniscule percentage of closed-minded people who would rather quite gaming altogether than play on a PC.PC gaming doesn't belong to Microsoft, Blizzard, Valve or anyone else. It belongs to us, the PC gamers, and we have to fight for it.

I don't disagree. It is about revenue. Most of that revenue surely is PC based for now. But not all of it. Moreover, it is not really PC gaming per se. This is because you don't need a PC for those games. This will become abundantly clear when most of this revenue flips over to other devices in the next 5 years. Since it is all about revenue the question is where is that revenue going to come from and what is it going to be spent on in the future? Presumably we care about this because it provides insights into the future viability and availability of games we like.

Fanboys can argue as much as they want over the piecharts, etc, but they are missing the real points about where gaming in general is going. PSP2, 3DS are great new products coming out???...bleh...handhelds have already peaked in marketshare and will go nowhere but down. Social network gaming and casual portal gaming are indicators that the future is bright for what we normally think of as PC gaming? Ummmm, no, that is going to migrate enmasse to other devices.

In the end, it is like exclusives. Exclusive, as in only on one platform; as in the answer is defined in the word. Now define PC gaming. Now define social network or casual game portal gaming. Therein lies the complexity of simply lumping those into a generic PC gaming category.

Take out MMO's, Casual gaming, and FarmVille and you're left with - take a guess - 19%. In contrast to consoles' 49%, that's nothing. Counting GAMES, you know, the ones that matter.

PC gaming is the most varied platform out there, in terms of who plays and the options they have to play. Forget SW's little meta game for a minute. No one is going to review social site gaming on here. The fact is every aspect of the PC market is growing (except outdated retail) while the console market has dramatically shrunk over the last year.

Take out big chunks of the console market too then, like casual games, EA sports, most of the shooters, move, kinect, wii games, XBLA, PSN, etc, etc. That doesn't make sense.
