I hope Sony will hire hitman to do the job. I can't understand how could people to so ridiculous and selfish. There's no hackers that are good from the beginning. Why the hate for Sony who wants to prevent their product being crack and their software sale being drained? :(Kleeyook

so you're advocating sony take up murder? wow, I bet you are such a cow you'd murder this guy FOR sony!

[QUOTE="shawty1984"]

[QUOTE="HuusAsking"]What about the Slims? They never had it to begin with, and with the Fats no longer produced, the consumer no longer has a choice. If Sony had really wanted to leave a choice, they should've forked the firmwares and let the consumers decide: OtherOS but no PSN or PSN but no OtherOS.

HuusAsking

What have the slims got to do with anything? The slims were never advertised as to having OtherOS anyway. You can still buy PS3 fats second hand. Or you can install Linux on any PC, there is plenty of choice. We are not talking about people here who have not yet bought a PS3, we are talking about owners already of the PS3.

But you can't get a Cell-powered computer any other way at the consumer level. Unless you can point me to one.

You can get a CELL based quad-SPE+H.264 encoding hardware enabled laptop from Toshiba.

X86 laptops already has host command processor i.e. PPE is useless. There's very little need for Toshiba Spursengine if the PC includes DX10/DX11 level "fat" GpGPU.

Here you go. No it's not a discrete computer, but it works the same way.

Im interested to see what happens, not because of sony or the ps3 but because this could affect all piracy forever. What if people couldnt pirate music, movies and pc games anymore?

and maybe we could have more good movies and music? The music industry is in shambles right now especially. Piracy really messes things up and causes media to get dumbed down to appeal to those that dont know how to steal.

Possible consequences or positive outcomes...

1.. End of Sony (or Sony Playstation)
(hope this isn't gonna happen)

2.. Sony employs all the hackers with a salary double that to the highest paid person in the company, in a sort of blackmailing the hackers to not release any more hacks.

3.. Sony let's this all happen, lose lots of money but starts the development of the PS4.

4.. Sony releases Egohot and drops the ransom, then secretly implements high tech security in a future patch. (background downloading?)

5.. VWI will start. (Virtual War 1) and Microsoft will join in for the fun. Nintendo will suddenly release a well hidden console with quantum chips while the 2 major companies think they are having a war with the hackers.

Any more possible outcomes?

Personally I would like Sony to keep making these fantastic systems..

None of these will happen... this guy and anyone associated with his blackmail are also going to be sued if not prison time.

I don't think people realise that these hackers are the biggest cows ever, why else would they want to break the system open so they can use there own homebrew, instead of just buying a great PC, where they can do all of that stuff already??

yea you must really be a hardcore cow to want to do everything on you're PS3 instead of you're PC.. :P

or maybe, just maybe the have other motives, that they really don't want people to know about;)

[QUOTE="lowe0"]Since when will they not sell you a Cell computer? Call IBM; they'd be happy to sell you a blade server with one.HuusAsking

Note the description: "Blade Server". That's an enterprise machine (provisioned more for business tasks requiring high throughput) and not intended for home use. Not to mention they're out of most people's budgets (I mean, why did the Air Force pick PS3s instead of these Cell BE blades?). Present a Cell personal computer or PC add-on board for a few hundred, and then you'll be more likely to draw homebrewers away from PS3s.

You said "computer" - not "personal computer." Besides, IBM is under no obligation to sell a product in a particular form factor or price segment, and the absense of such a product does not justify the hackers' actions.

Consumers won't lose anything if other people want to enhance their system.

Also this thread is a trap for people posetive to this, watch out for moderations even if it got nothing to do with piracy.

I don't understand the relevance of that, nor the relation between being a multi-national corporation and having your back against the wall. Multi-national corporations are simply businesses that span countries/continents.

You guys are ridiculous. There's a stereotype that all gamers are fat 30 year old men who live in their parents basement and yet you use that same stereotype to describe these guys. Since you believe the stereotype that all hackers are nerds living in their parents basement, I assume you're all 30 year old nerds that weigh 400 pounds and look like the guy from the South Park episode, am I correct? Do you have any idea what these people even look like or what they do for a living? Just because you're a hacker doesn't mean you sit at home all day eating Cheetos and drinking Mountain Dew. Seriously grow the f*** up and educate yourself or don't speak at all. Keep your ignorance to yourself.I-Doomzday-I

Uh, buddy, I think we are talking about one specific individual here. Someone foolish enough to make a threat, publically, to do damage if certain actions aren't taken. There's no requirement that one must be a cheetos powdered 30 year old to be commonsense clueless.

Basically a company want absolute control over its product after its been sold (aka the unit doesnt belong to sony anymore) Its bad enough that games are lisceneced as opposed to being brought but bringing this same idea to the entirety of a console really makes me mad. Im glad sony has their back to the wall on this one.

I still don't understand this crap. Who the hell hacks a console? If you want to make mods or "homebrew" there's this thing called a PC. Consoles are for playing console games. That's it. It's likethis newage of jail-breaking phones and whatnot has given peoplea false sense of entitlement to do whatever they want with technology. You want a more customizable experience? Well, get a real job and developmachine or networkyourself instead of ruining other peoples work.

The Cell is a very different kind of processor: perhaps better suited for certain tasks like media encoding or ray tracing than x86. Why else do you think the Air Force turned a bunch of them into servers? Because it was better than using x86's. Same story here. It's a unique kind of processor that could have specialty uses. Why not let us find out?

Note that, Toshiba Spursengine (Quad SPE chip) includes H.264 encoding hardware. When it comes to heavy math workload, why are you ignoring the GpGPU? Why the old fashion CPU vs CPU?

Because no one's yet been able to adequately solve the problem of motion estimation. Motion estimation tends to be computationally divergent--bad for GPUs with their memory access constraints. Sure some GPGPU-based H.264 encoders do exist, but their quality has been derided by the videophiles.

Car analogies don't really work. These modifications, while not initially intended to, eventually will negatively affect others. That's the part where I'm no longer fully onboard.

Sony can ban my console all they want from PSN i wouldn't care since i don't play MP on it.

USS_Data

So why dont you challenge Sonys "made up laws" in court?

Why would I? I do what I want with my PS3 and if sony has a problem with that then let them challenge me in court where I live I know who will be the victor and that is not Sony. As long as I don't download and play illegal copies of games i'm well within my rights.

It's alright that YOU don't play illegal copies of games or cheat online and I'm sure Sony don't care that much about it either. They do however, care about people who actually download their games and play it illegal, and like it or not the hacking of the PS3 has made it possible for people to do just that. Why shouldn't they bring out the big guns for potential losses in sales or a ruined online service?

It's a dobbel edged sword: The hacking of the PS3 might've been because people wanted to have Linux on their PS3 which is fine by me, but it also allowed for people to play illegal games and cheat online, which is not cool since it's my experience that'll be ruined in the end.

So you go ahead and do whatever YOU want offline, but don't tell me that I should embrace these hackers because I sure the hell won't have my experience ruined be it online or because publishers don't want to release games for the PS3.

Because Sony may well be shooting at straw targets. Has anyone really proven that these hacks increased the prevalence of piracy by any noticeable degree. Look at the 360, the Wii, the PS2, and so on back. Seems like a game of diminishing returns to me. IOW, is it really worth all the press? And publishers not releasing games on the PS3? They're pretty nip and tuck with the 360 right now, and besides which, game discs are still secure (unless someone discloses the LV1 key), as is PSN (Sony's SSL key is still secure, and Sony can manage things server-side). And what about on the supposed poster-child of piracy, the PC? They still get games published all the time.

keyword being hardware. You can't mod sony software and expect them to do nothing. They bought a machine. They can open it, solder whatever they want, take the pieces and sell them. But when it comes to software, that's something you can either create yourself from zero (it isn't the case), or use the one given for free from sony. Anything else they can demand a legal process to determine the legality of the software modding.

geohot and failoverflow claim they want otherOS back. No sign of otheros. Piracy everywhere. We can determine at this point that the release of keys and tools was not in good will.

This hacker that blackmails sony... just for blackmailing, anything he released will be a clear damage for sony thus they can charge.

It's simple business really. With stronger sales they wouldn't charge as much because cheaper prices = more sales, which in turn means more money for them. It would be a win-win situation for devs, publishers and consumers if it were not for the criminals.

So you know nothing of business right?

The more you sell, the less you devalue your product. The less it sells, the faster you make discounts to free some stock before the next installment.

Wii vs PS3 this gen for example. Ps3 dropped price fairly quick. Wii stayed at the initial price for a lot of time, despite having a price 4-5x times superior to the manufacture cost.

The criminals being pirates. Games are exceedingly expensive because of pirates.

What the hell are you talking about? There is no such relation as you are describing it.

If anything, the possibility of getting a game for free is what keeps prices competitive. If the publishers could be the absolute authority in pricing games could be found at full price even years after release.

I think it's kind of obvious by the comments in this thread who the regular consumers are, and the "others". ;)

Trying to strawman your way out of the idiotic comments you've made regarding business, aren't you.

That's some impeccable logic you have right there.

[QUOTE="N30F3N1X"]

[QUOTE="Bigboi500"]It's simple business really. With stronger sales they wouldn't charge as much because cheaper prices = more sales, which in turn means more money for them. It would be a win-win situation for devs, publishers and consumers if it were not for the criminals.

Bigboi500

Lolwut?

Then why aren't they doing this already? And exactly, what has this to do with "criminals"?

The criminals being pirates. Games are exceedingly expensive because of pirates.

No, games are exceedingly expensive because of high gamer expectations (high-quality textures, models, etc.) Those take talent (and thus time and money) to make.
