So I've been watching my nephew for a few days while my sister is out of town and he brought over his copy of Mod Nation Racers to play on my PS3 while he's here. We popped it in the PS3 and we sat there with the controllers in our hands ready to play a few matches, download some custom made race tracks, and all that fun stuff. But it's never that simple when it comes to the PS3... is it? As soon as the game starts, a game update pop-up comes on the screen. I thought, "Okay... fair enough, shouldn't take TOO long" but when the update started, it said it was 324MB I was sitting there like ":| wtf..." but I thought "Ok... well I have a 32Mbps internet connection so this STILL shouldn't take too long. I'll start it up right now, leave the game running, and me and the kid will go do something else for a little while and by the time we come back it'll be done no matter what." So I started the update and left the room.

Boy was I wrong.

It's been about 5 hours now and the update STILL isn't f***ing done. It's only 83% done to be exact. But guess what? According to the case, I still have to install the game in order to play once the update IS done. WTF. Why can't I just pop in the game and play? Why do I have to waste half of the day for crap to download and install?

I run onto this problem a lot on the PS3. The other night me and my girlfriend just wanted to hop on Black Ops and play a few matches with each other. But guess what... we couldn't do that. Why? RIDICULOUS firmware update 3.56 that did absolutely NOTHING for us. It took 45 freaking minutes for BOTH of us. And if I remember correctly, the file size wasn't even that large. What gives? It seems like Sony feels the need to release these useless updates every other week too. I'm sick and tired of it. Maybe if they didn't download SO SLOW and happen SO OFTEN, they wouldn't be such a big deal. But now it's to the point where I'm about to spend the money and get a 360 specifically because of this.

Seriously Sony, don't you see how inconvenient these damn things are? Patches and firmware updates are fine usually, but don't make every little tiny insignificant update MANDATORY when in 2 weeks it's going to be obsolete anyways. And instead of putting your effort into making stupid little updates that nobody cares about like the ones you've been releasing lately, how about releasing something people actually WANT... like Cross Game Chat. There's NO excuse for the PS3 to not have CGC by now. People have been begging for it for years now. :| 1)Stop releasing so many useless updates 2) UPGRADE YOUR DAMN SERVERS so they don't take unreasonably long times to download 3) GIVE YOUR CUSTOMERS WHAT THEY ASK FOR with these updates, don't spend time giving us stuff we dont want 4)Don't make every single update mandatory

Discuss. Who else feels the same way as I do?

Buy PS+, turn on automatic updates, set it for 3-5A.M. Problem solved. I hardly have to sit through updates anymore because it updates when I sleep.

PSN is terrible for patches and firmware upgrades. I have very good internet and it just crawls on PSN when I have to DL a patch or firmware update.

I think I heard about that update being unusally long (can't remember), but that is defintely not the norm. The longest update I've had has being 45 mins, most are 20 mins

My downloads never go "slow" on PSN. The huge ME2 demo and other huge demoes usually only take me 15 - 20 minutes to download which is about the same as the Crysis 2 demo took me on XBL. My connection generally goes the same with both PSN and XBL with downloads but I will admit updates are faster on 360.

A 32mbps takes over five hours for a 300 MB update, my speed is about 5 mbps, and even 2500 MB things only take about two hours at most. The longest an update or install for a game has ever taken is like 10 minutes, but you only have to do it one time so it's no big deal.

The updates are not frequent. They're only frequent if you NEVER turn on your PS3. And downloads are only slow if your internet connection is slow. Downloads on both my 360 and PS3 seem to take forever for downloads that are less than a gigabyte.

It's not a joke, and if there IS something wrong it's on Sony's side of things. We have multiple Blu-Ray players(and the PS3 as well) that stream Netflix in the house and my internet connection has no problem streaming HD movies on all 3 Blu Ray players at the same time. We do it very often and we've never ran into any hiccups. This has been an ongoing problem since I got the PS3 way back in 2007 btw. The updates ALWAYS take way longer than they should. I'm assuming Sony doesn't have nearly enough servers for my state(Arizona), because 4 of my friends, my sister, my brother, my uncle, my cousin, and my sister's ex boyfriend ALL have this issue(downloading unbelievably slow) and they all have good internet connections.

Still not paying for PSN+ though.

Seems you're the only one HERE having this kind of problem, so it's definitely not Sony's fault... but let's wait and see if someone else with a PS3 is from Arizona too and see how's he doing.

I never understand why PS3 owners always complain about update times. Hours? Ive NEVER had a single update on XBL over 5 minutes (the new dashboard updates are the only ones that take more than 1 minute). Sonys really gotta be cutting costs in firmware hosting or whatever department that is

I'd almost guarantee that if someone from Arizona DOES respond, they'll confirm that I'm not BSing. Not every update takes 5 hours though... this is the slowest one I've ever downloaded for the size of the file. The updates are definitely slow out here for some reason though, and it's bullcrap. If it IS just an Arizona thing, then there's no excuse. It means Sony's cheap and hasn't installed more servers out here. There's tons of PS3 owners here, why should we have to wait so much longer for updates than everyone else?

Yeah at most any download from psn takes 20 minutes for me, i download movies fairly regular and some are 1.8gb and even they only take about 1 hour sometimes a little more and that seems pretty within the 600-700kbps download speed i generally get from any of the PSN servers.... I think TC is miles from an exchange or his ISP is just bad.... very very bad.

Well on the 360, game updates are limited to a max of 4mb. On PS3, there is no limit. Don't ask me how Black Ops (or any multiplatform game) will get the the update on 360 at 4mb and 'whatever ungodly size I'm sure it is' on PS3 because I don't get it either. I don't know what all those extra embee's are doing... Feeding teh Cell

I have never had too many problems with it. The last one that took a shile was the Heavy Rain move update, it took a while but I was able to starting playing Heavy Rain after about 40minutes or so. I only have a 24Mbps connection and in AUSTRALIA, so I am not sure what is wrong with your connection that it took 5 hours to download 300MB. Why the install? I have read this, IF the Xbox360 doesn't need to install it, then why does the PS3. It could be the way the updates are stored on the servers, the way the files are stored on the HDD, there could be a myriad of ways, there might need to be some additional tasks that need to be performed to other items that mean it has to perform an install as well. I could say, why do I have to install my PC game when I simply put it into my 360 and just play it, the same argument as well. Game updates, they aren't Sony's doing they are the updates to the game, by the developers, and there are good reasons why they might need it. There are some updates I have seen that require a Firmware update, but as I keep my firmware regularly updated I have never worried about it.

PSN downloads are by all means not fast but they are not super slow either,i only have a 10mps connection and don't get those long download times your getting,i doubt it has to do with your area or service. If your running wireless it could every well do with you not opening ports or fixing and nat problems that can come with wireless.

lol Really? I think you take the internet too seriously. You honestly think a crap about "thread hits"? I rarely even make threads. Everything I said in my post was 100% true and I don't care about "thread hits", I care about updates not taking forever because I love my PS3 and my games. It's possibly my favorite console I've ever owned. But these updates are getting out of hand and this problem needs to be addressed. If it IS just Sony being cheap with their update servers, then that really makes me lose a lot of respect for Sony. Especially if they start making patch after patch trying to stop the hackers. If that's the case, then I don't know if I'm going to put up with it anymore and I'm dead serious. There's no reason I(or anyone else) should put up with waiting for slow ass, inconvenient downloads every week or so just so Sony can try to damage the control the hackers. IF Sony DOES plan on doing that, the only way they can redeem themselves is if they make the automatic downloads PSN+ feature free to everyone. If they did that, then they'd gain some of my respect back.

You should go to the network settings and do an internet connection test on your PS3. Maybe the signal is low or something (assuming you're on wireless). If you signal is less than 70%, you're likely to have some slow down. Basing on you connection specs you listed above, your downloads should go faster than mine

Never had a single update take longer than 1 hour at MAX, and I don't have ultra speed internet and my PS3 is conected Wi-Fi. There has to be some sort of issue on your end as well, wether or not your other media streams just fine. 5 hours...don't believe it unless Sony reaaaly hates Arizona.

My 360 is placed like 3 feet above my PS3, both connected via wifi, with the router being upstairs. On my 360, I downloaded the Crysis 2 demo in about 30 minutes. The demo is about a gig right? It would take me hourS on my PS3 to download an update that size. I'll back this guy up 100%, PS3 is just plain slower it seems.

A 300 MB download for me on PSN is 5-10 minutes. I find it highly unlikely that 300 mb would take you several hours

My 360 is placed like 3 feet above my PS3, both connected via wifi, with the router being upstairs. On my 360, I downloaded the Crysis 2 demo in about 30 minutes. The demo is about a gig right? I don't know, maybe its just by region. I live in California with an okay internet connection, and 1 gb downloads, if I'm standing by, will take 10-30 minutes.

I never have any problems. Takes a few minutes usually.

Man your internet must suck. I haven't played UC2, KZ2, or Gran Turismo 5 since their respective launches. Had them up and running, plus installed, within an hour. Thats on crappy ATT DSL.

Buy a 360, your games will update in mere seconds.

It makes me want to think that it's my PS3 that's the problem. It's a launch 60GB, might be crapping out on me, I dunno. Do newer PS3 models have better wifi capabilities or... I dunno? It takes longer than it should loading icons on the XMB too.
