And you are the one refusing to believe the problem could be at your end since people with slower connections download updates faster then you. Yeah I know it can't be possible the error is at your end it MUST be sony's fault

but if everything else downloaded on his connection is fast except for service from Sony, then it stands to reason that the problem lies with Sony and not with his connection? Lets not forget that lots of others have experienced his problem as well, maybe not to the same degree though.
Okay. I don't REFUSE to believe the the problem is on my end. It's that I have extensive evidence that the problem ISN'T at my end, and NO evidence that it is. I have every reason to believe the problem isn't at my end. I have a 32 Mbps connection. 2-4GB torrents download in less than an hour on average for me. I stream HD Netflix in 3 rooms at once on the same connection without hiccups. My family and friends that have PS3s have slow update downloads too, and every PS3 owner I know IRL in my city's most common complaints are how slow the updates are and how many there are. I have a dual band wireless N ethernet bridge that I've tried with my PS3 to bypass any chance of the problem being the PS3's internal WIFI. I have a brand new DOCSIS 3.0 modem that I use with my high end $200(when I bought it) Linksys Dual Band N router. My buddy has the exact same ISP/plan as me and lives right down the block from me and he has NO problem downloading updates blazing fast on his 360. This seems to be a PS3 only thing, and (apparently) a Phoenix, Arizona thing only. Pretty much every scrap of evidence I can find points to it not being a problem on my end. And since I know multiple people in my area with PS3s that have the same problem, I can pretty much scratch out the possibility that it ever WAS a problem on my end. And if it was a problem on my end, don't you think I'd have figured it out by now? This has been going on since I got the thing in 2007. I'm not an idiot when it comes to diagnosing technological problems. If it WAS a problem on my end, I'd have fixed it by now and I wouldn't be making this thread right now. To put it simply, it IS a problem on their end and it really needs fixed. All they need to do is add servers out here and problem solved. But they're too cheap to do that. :\And you are the one refusing to believe the problem could be at your end since people with slower connections download updates faster then you. People are too blind to see that. I've tried everything possible to see if the problem is on my side and it clearly points right back at Sony(their slow download servers in specific... or lack of them in my area). And people are also to blind to read apparently as well. I never said EVERY update takes 5 hours, just this one in particular. I said that most of them take 30-60 minutes, but even that is way too long. People don't read any of that though. It seems like people just see the thread title and think "OMG A thread by a PS3 owner that's not kissing Sony's ass... MUST... DESTROY!" lmfao :roll:yeeeeaah, perhaps keep that to yourself next time :?marklarmerWhy? It's one of the examples I could think of. Besides, using torrents is an efficient way to download files at high speeds and isn't illegal. It's what you use them for that can be illegal, and it's not like I sat here and listed off every little file I've downloaded. So what's the problem? :S

Or maybe YOU have notconfigured the network settings correctly on the PS3. Seriously man i have a 60MB connection and patches on the ps3 download just as fast as when i update a game on the pc. Might be idea to check your network settings and configure it manually instead of having everything on automatic (which is probably the case) before blaming Sony.
Might be a good idea to read the actual content of my posts instead of just reading the title and assuming you know exactly what I said(which is probably the case) before blaming my network settings. ;) I've stated MANY times in this thread that I have my PS3 in a DMZ. Maybe you don't know what that is? Well let me explain this to you a bit... a DMZ(or dematerialized zone) is essentially a mode you put your router in where it takes one of your devices and basically 'un-routers'(that's the only way I can describe) it. In other words, it runs just like it would if it weren't running through a router, with all of the ports forwarding to it. In order to do this though, you have to set that device to a static ip address. Thus, meaning my PS3 is set up manually with a static IP address, thus it's not on "Automatic" like you jumped to conclusions and claimed. Hope you learned a bit about DMZ today. You're welcome. ;)Or maybe YOU have configured the network settings correctly on the PS3. I decided to put it to the test myself. I have ModNation Racers but haven't popped it in in a couple of months. I popped it in and started the update in question at 7:28. I have a 20mbps connection. It is now 7:37 and it says 78% complete. I'll let you know the total time of my update.incuensuochaThat's not an accurate test unless you live in the Phoenix, Arizona area and it's your first time EVER running MNR(it was my first time on this PS3 and it was a 4 part update)

Give it up the problem is on your end. Lots of people in this thread with slower connections have proven you wrong. So instead of wasting time here blaming Sony for something you fail at set the settings manual or stop whining like a little child and pointing fingers at the wrong people.
Done! It's 7:39 and the update is done and the MNR main screen is loading up. Total time, 12 minutes. I'm not gonna make any accusations against TC, maybe the servers were slow that day. Everyone I know here in Phx, AZ is having problems... so I'm mainly looking for people in Phoenix to test it out and confirm my problems to be true if they can.
TC just stop they are not gonna believe you anytime i see an update for the ps3 i just throw my hands in the air and just let it download because it can never download in the background and the psn+service is sad because those are major features that most people should have but dont. But i do believe you TC but they are not gonna listen because you are attacking their system of choice.

i understand what the TC is saying. when i first got my ps3 around this time last year, the first game i got for it was littlebigplanet. when i popped it in to play there was a 4 part update that took over a half an hour to download then another 10 minutes to install. that's just ridiculous. this is one of the things xbox does much better than the ps3, updates NEVER take more than a minute or two to download.
I never understand why PS3 owners always complain about update times. Hours? Ive NEVER had a single update on XBL over 5 minutes (the new dashboard updates are the only ones that take more than 1 minute). Sonys really gotta be cutting costs in firmware hosting or whatever department that isshadow8585The difference is that the PS3's API must be loaded with bloated spaghetti code or something. Not only do you have to download huge updates, but they have to unpack and install, whereas on the 360 they just download and quickly install. I think this is something that makes bluray needed on the PS3. The code is obvious too bloated to do small (almost weekly) without being a pain.
Honestly, its one of the major reasons why I don't play game or buy games for my PS3. Its too much of hassle to always download system updates, etc. They really need to limit them to once a quarter or once every two months. There have been times when they have major updates within 2 weeks of each other. Thats way too often.i understand what the TC is saying. when i first got my ps3 around this time last year, the first game i got for it was littlebigplanet. when i popped it in to play there was a 4 part update that took over a half an hour to download then another 10 minutes to install. that's just ridiculous. this is one of the things xbox does much better than the ps3, updates NEVER take more than a minute or two to download.

[QUOTE="Pug-Nasty"]I have my PS3 set up in a DMZ through my Linksys Simultaneous Dual Band Wireless N router. I'm not an idiot. :|Utilize google and learn how to set up your network. It's good, yes?
Messiahbolical-
If your network is set up properly then something else is wrong. Look at the others in this thread telling you how ridiculous the times you posted are. Call Sony, try wiring (as your ps3 is only 3 feet from the router), trouble shoot.
Well TC, first of all, why do you complain about fanboys? You created a thread about a PS3 issue on SW, it's obvious a lot think you're trying to bash the PS3 instead of actually having a normal discussion if you post it here instead of the PS3 board. I don't know what's wrong at you place, I don't know if there is an issue with the connection between your region and the Sony servers. All I can say is that here in the lakeland of Bern in Switzerland I can download 300MB patches with a 20 Mbps connection withing 10-15 minutes, including the MNR update. I don't have much longer for games imported from the US. I'm afraid it isn't on Sonys end if others can dl them quickly, I also don't think it's on you end (guess you do port-forwarding through you DMZ?), I guess it's somewhere inbetween, some connection between the regions that may be slow. Ever pinged the Sony website to see how long it has to react?
I have to agree with the TC on this one. I had a few buddies around last weekend to play a bit of GT5 but the mandatory updates just got in the way. We watched a movie, played some wii bowling and some Forza while the updates were downloading. Eventually, it was well over three hours after we started the process, one of my friends went home and got his ps3 which had downloaded the update earlier. I don't remember exactly how big the download was, my internet connection is nowhere near 32mb/sec and I'm not sure it took 5 hours but I want a console so I can pick up and play games when I want to play them. Just like the TC I enjoy my ps3 but when I have to wait upwards of 3 hours just to play a quick game it irritates me.
i kinda agree with TC, psn does seem to have way more updates and does take a bit longer than live. also ive been trying to add funds to my account for weeks and for some reason my credit card info STILL isnt working on psn when that exact info has been working fine for 360 ever since i got my new card....im trying to love my ps3 but they are making it difficult lol

updates are great, no need for hour long ones though.
they are a pain but i usually just find something else to do while the ps3 is doing its thing. with certain games though like GT5, updates are necessary because of all the stuff they are fixing and adding. its annoying though. PS3, It only does........slow downloads. sorry, had to say it

I never in my life incountered an hour long update. Not even when I was on PSN.like i posted before, it was damn close to an hour when i first got my ps3 with LBP. it might have been my connection (25+ mbps), i doubt it though.
I have heard of PS3's being slow on some ISP's for some odd reason (I didn't read into it enough to find out if it was resolved) but isn't there an option to just download it on your PC then transfer it across on a USB stick or something? That or contact your ISP and see if maybe they are shaping your traffic from PSN.
When I got LBP last year it took the best part of 25 minutes updating.
There is a massive difference between XBL and PSN regarding download time. This, and the fact the 360 installs updates and demos as they download, is why I think XBL is superior to PSN.
Also because the UK PSN marketplace is a ****ing joke.
It's true and it's annoying, I notice it especially since I don't use it everyday so when I do there is almost always an update waiting. I don't understand why they don't have the updates download on the background or something. PSN needs a big overhaul in how it handles updates.
My downloads haven't taken 5h thankfully, but I suppose it's possible if the server crashes or something, but even when the download is decent speed(rarely) having to install it pretty much doubles the time, it's just inconvenient.
