Assuming you're being honest, you are in the minority.

GreenGoblin2099

Minority? Not really since people complain about it all the time.

Ok, let's get this straight:

It's true that the PC/360 updates are faster than the PS3 updates, HOWEVER, these don't take more than 20/30 mins. (and that's really really stretching) less 5 hrs like TC stated.

Also, it doesn't update THAT often. Like Xboximus said, before the one last week, there hasn't been an update for months now.

In my first post in this thread I already said 5 hours is extremely long.

Yes, I'm aware. I posted this because someone tried to refute 360 updates faster, which is not entirely true.

Also because certain posters have sided with TC, and that's just well... fanboyish IMO.

Ummm first of all no need to blame Sony for Mod Nation Racers and CoD updates... those are from the developer not Sony.

Secondly, I have TERRIBLE internet, my max download speed is 350kB/s and max upload is 20kB/s and it doesn't take me 5 hours to download a 300mb file on my PS3. I just recently updated to 1.05 on GT5 and while it was slow it still only took about an hour to download and that was a SIX HUNDRED mb file double this 300mb update u had.

So either you got super unlucky and they had a server issue at the time you wanted to play or you're just exaggerating.

[QUOTE="Skittles_McGee"] Nobody's falling for that :|Riverwolf007

Actually i tend towards believing him. I updated to 3.56 today and it took me around 40 minutes. Also the last GT5 update that was over 1 Gig took forever, i don't remember exactly how long it took but it was way over 2 hours. PSN updates are so incredibly slow for me and it can't be just my connection. My download speed on steam and 360 marketplace are fine.

mine take forever too but the moment you bring it up around here you are automatically a liar with crappy internet.

I think it is more to do with a persons network setup. I dmz mine, personally, so that it doesn't get bogged down in the routers settings. I'm sure that people with multiple systems may want to dmz one, and not switch them back and forth just to update and play online, but that's what port forwarding is for.

Some people also seem to be under the impression that wired = no ports need to be opened. This is false. Also, the NAT may keep the same ports from being open on different devices on the same network.

It can be a real pain to properly set up a network for multiple systems that utilize many of the same ports for online gaming. I believe that DMZ'ing one system and port forwarding all ports to the other should alleviate the problems associated with multiple system networking though.

i will have to look into that because i have never done any kind of custom setting. i just hardwire mine and let it do it's thing. if there is something i can do to speed it up i will do it.

my system updates are not too bad since i just go watch tv or something but unless it's an exclusive i won't even attempt to do demos since i can do those on 360 in about a quarter of the time the ps3 takes to dl the same one.

I can almost guarantee that your setup will be improved with, even a little, optimization. Out of the box settings suck on most routers. At the very least, make sure UPnP is enabled in the router settings.

Ha. You should be able to find some good instructions for dmz'ing or port forwarding online. If not, I can try to set up a general guide. I'm no expert, but I've had to run through this networking crap a few times for different reasons.

Updated last night, it took like 5 minutes. This "5 hours" outrage sounds like drama queen nonsense. Also I get a chuckle out of people posting on Gamespot and addressing their comments to Sony, as if Sony himself is sitting at his computer reading System Wars to find out how to improve his services. Anyway it seems NO amount of discussion will CALM YOU DOWN so go ahead and BE OUTRAGED about your exceptionally long updates. I'm just happy they don't take that long on my PS3/connection etc.

[QUOTE="GodofEmpires"][QUOTE="Not-A-Stalker"]My 360 is placed like 3 feet above my PS3, both connected via wifi, with the router being upstairs. On my 360, I downloaded the Crysis 2 demo in about 30 minutes. The demo is about a gig right? It would take me hourS on my PS3 to download an update that size. I'll back this guy up 100%, PS3 is just plain slower it seems.Not-A-Stalker
I don't know, maybe its just by region. I live in California with an okay internet connection, and 1 gb downloads, if I'm standing by, will take 10-30 minutes.

It makes me want to think that it's my PS3 that's the problem. It's a launch 60GB, might be crapping out on me, I dunno. Do newer PS3 models have better wifi capabilities or... I dunno? It takes longer than it should loading icons on the XMB too.

I've thought about this too. I have the ancient 40gb stripped down model that apparently had some problems when it first came out. Maybe they used cheaper wireless cards back then? idk

This is one of the reasons I got rid of my ps3, I get sick of all the updates that only download when you put the game in and they take forever. How can it be quicker to download a whole game off steam than a update for a ps3 game?

Need a better internet. For System Updates, I always download the updates to my PSP, then I update it from "storage media"bbkkristian
explain how an 8gb game can be downloaded off steam in the same time a 300mb update off psn. psn is just terribly slow compared to other services.

I never understand why PS3 owners always complain about update times. Hours? Ive NEVER had a single update on XBL over 5 minutes (the new dashboard updates are the only ones that take more than 1 minute). Sonys really gotta be cutting costs in firmware hosting or whatever department that isshadow8585

Diffrence is game patches on 360 are only around 40mb :P and tbh a lot of the dashboard updates arent big because you have to download the parts you want for example the likes of LAST.fm and facebook are extendable downloads.

These inevitably keep the patch sizes down in comparrison to how sony does it which i would say is actually more akin to the PC game patches we seen for games.

A good comparrison is the latest set of patches for BFBC2, PS3 the maps are included in the patchand on the 360 these are downloaded through the store as an extension download.

Yup. I jump from my 360 to ps3 a lot, and boy is the ps3 so much slower. Press the guide button and u have to wait for the icons, trophies, gamercard, etc to load and sync. Update installs are a joke as well. First you have to download it, then install which in total usually takes 5+ minutes for most. On the 360, it's a quick 3 second download/install and you are done!

Buy PS+, turn on automatic updates, set it for 3-5A.M. Problem solved. I hardly have to sit through updates anymore because it updates when I sleep.CajunShooter
You shouldn't need to buy PS+ to get a fast download. That's lame. My update usually take about 30-40 mins, depending on the size. Never 5 hours though. On my XBox 360 it's usually less then 5 mins and that includes install as well. lol!! PSN servers are slow as molasses though. Having to install 2-4 GB from a game to your HDD is ridiculous as well.

Inger1
First of all: I'm not exaggerating. It was LITERALLY 5 hours. And just for example, we watched The Dark Knight to kill time... started it at around 2%, by the time the movie was over it was still in the 45ish% range. No joke. The Dark Knight is almost 2 and a half hours long btw. Second of all: I KNOW it's a server issue. But it's an ongoing problem. It's not to usually to THIS extent, but downloads are almost always slow. I'd say 8, maybe 9 uploads out of 10 are significantly slower than they should be. Third of all: This was probably the worst example I can remember since I've had the PS3. I'm not claiming every download takes 5 hours. Most firmware updates take 30-60 minutes, but even that is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too long... especially when half of them are almost, if not completely useless to us. :|

I hope you're joking. Sure anyone can find anything to do for 5 hours, but doesn't that ruin the whole convenience of video games? Aren't video games supposed to be instant entertainment? You pop the game in and play... that's how it's always been in the past. Sure you had to wait for the disc to load for a few mins here and there, but you didn't have all these updates and installs. For instance, the other night me and my girlfriend just wanted to play Call Of Duty for a half an hour or so before bed just for some quick fun. We figured we'd just hop on real quick and play a couple of matches. Why couldn't it have been so simple? We ended up waiting 45 minutes(around the same amount of time on both of our PS3s) to download the MANDATORY firmware update. That's longer than we were planning on playing the dame game itself! And it turns out the update was just for Sony to help damage control against hackers! It had no benefit at all for me or her. I had to wait that long just for that? Really did piss me off.

First of all: You're right. It SHOULD only take about 10 minutes. It didn't, however. Isn't that the whole point of why I made the thread? :| Second of all: Why should I have to go on my computer, find a site where the update is hosted, download it, put it on a flash card, take the flash card over to the PS3, go under the flash card on my PS3 to find the update and install it just to play a game? The PS3 built in updater just shouldn't take so long to begin with. And besides... where am I going to find new updates for games anyways? I doubt if an update just came out I'd be able to find it on my PC right away with a site hosting it for download already.

It's the truth. I shouldn't HAVE to wait if I don't want to. I should have, you know, a choice of when I want to take the time to update once in a while. Why does everything have to be mandatory? It's such a buzzkill when all you want to do is have a quick session...

something wrong with your ISP, Connection or settings.

I only have a 8mb connection and all updates are as fast as my connection can handle. I live in scandinavia.

yep PSN is definitely slower for downloads than other services, at least it is in Australia.

At home it is dog slow, with dropouts making you restart the download etc

We have the PS3 in the rec room at work (and we are on a 100Mb/100Mb fibre connection with 1 to 1 contention ratio running through Cisco routers) and the download time through PSN is absolutely atrocious at times. Yet all the other download services like the Video Store, ABC, download or stream screamingly fast on it. The Sony update servers are just completely under specced for the load they have to deal with.

Everything else on the net runs at full tilt both at home and at work (different ISP's too), so it is not a configuration issue. The only common denominator is the Sony servers themselves.

So I've been watching my nephew for a few days while my sister is out of town and he brought over his copy of Mod Nation Racers to play on my PS3 while he's here. We popped it in the PS3 and we sat there with the controllers in our hands ready to play a few matches, download some custom made race tracks, and all that fun stuff. But it's never that simple when it comes to the PS3... is it? As soon as the game starts, a game update pop-up comes on the screen. I thought, "Okay... fair enough, shouldn't take TOO long" but when the update started, it said it was 324MB I was sitting there like ":| wtf..." but I thought "Ok... well I have a 32Mbps internet connection so this STILL shouldn't take too long. I'll start it up right now, leave the game running, and me and the kid will go do something else for a little while and by the time we come back it'll be done no matter what." So I started the update and left the room.

Boy was I wrong.

It's been about 5 hours now and the update STILL isn't f***ing done. It's only 83% done to be exact. But guess what? According to the case, I still have to install the game in order to play once the update IS done. WTF. Why can't I just pop in the game and play? Why do I have to waste half of the day for crap to download and install?

I run onto this problem a lot on the PS3. The other night me and my girlfriend just wanted to hop on Black Ops and play a few matches with each other. But guess what... we couldn't do that. Why? RIDICULOUS firmware update 3.56 that did absolutely NOTHING for us. It took 45 freaking minutes for BOTH of us. And if I remember correctly, the file size wasn't even that large. What gives? It seems like Sony feels the need to release these useless updates every other week too. I'm sick and tired of it. Maybe if they didn't download SO SLOW and happen SO OFTEN, they wouldn't be such a big deal. But now it's to the point where I'm about to spend the money and get a 360 specifically because of this.

Seriously Sony, don't you see how inconvenient these damn things are? Patches and firmware updates are fine usually, but don't make every little tiny insignificant update MANDATORY when in 2 weeks it's going to be obsolete anyways. And instead of putting your effort into making stupid little updates that nobody cares about like the ones you've been releasing lately, how about releasing something people actually WANT... like Cross Game Chat. There's NO excuse for the PS3 to not have CGC by now. People have been begging for it for years now. :| 1)Stop releasing so many useless updates 2) UPGRADE YOUR DAMN SERVERS so they don't take unreasonably long times to download 3) GIVE YOUR CUSTOMERS WHAT THEY ASK FOR with these updates, don't spend time giving us stuff we dont want 4)Don't make every single update mandatory

Discuss. Who else feels the same way as I do?

For the people saying just leave your console on over night as if that invalidates his complaint.... should you really HAVE To leave your games console on over night to install patches and updates? I hardly think that's an advantage. Consoles need to remain consoles, not PCs.

haha try waiting 20 minutes for a tape to playthrough on the ZXspectrum. cartridges were a revolution back then.

pffft the inferiour zx spectrum and it's tedious load times the msx 2 was far superiour and had much faster load times because the games came on disks, In comparisson the zx spectrum is like PSN with it's tedious slow downloads

Your connection has a huge problem,it takes minutes in my 4mb connection,on a 32 mb one I think it should not take more than 3 or 4 minutes,if not less something is wrong with your connection.

My 4MB connection took only 40 minutes to download Undead Nightmare, which is more than 1GB.

HMM.

[QUOTE="delta3074"]all good things come to those who wait, i am sure people can find something else to do for 5 hours, i rmember back in the spectrum days, you could make a sandwich and a cup of tea in the time it took games to load,lolMessiahbolical-

Really did piss me off.

no i am not joking, i can think of plenty of better things to do with my wife for 45 minutes whilst waiting to play COD, personally i would have skipped straight to the 'going to bed' part but that's just me and the fact my wife is an absolute stunner and it does benefit you in the long run, if SONY let these nefarious pirates run rampant through there system it will have a knock on effect that could be absolutely disastrous for ps3 owners it could potentially noost up the cost of retail games for starters.

I dont even bother downloading the system updates anymore since I don't play my PS3 online. I just remember when I played Heavy Rain it did a huge update that took about 2 hours (I think it was for the PS move which I don't own).

Well you say you have a 32 Mbps connection that is garbage even in the US where they are way behind most advanced countries.

Wow. Mods please lock this thread. I can't believe the disgusting level of fanboyism in here. People can't even handle the fact that this problem I'm having honestly could be a problem on Sony's end? Almost every reply in this thread is the same garbage "OMG IT HAS TO BE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION, THERE'S NO WAY IT'S SONY'S FAULT" as if Sony doesn't make any mistakes whatsoever. Some of the people in SW really make me ashamed of being a PS3-only owner. You guys really need to take a step back and take a look at yourselves in the mirror and ask why you care about these companies so much as if they're your own family... :| For real guys. Some of you guys REALLY take this stuff seriously, don't you? Like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are your gods and they'd never do anything wrong and you'll defend them to the end no matter what. Wow. :| Sorry I made this thread guys. I guess it's just SOOOOOOOOOOOOO hard to believe that a guy with a high end internet connection could get pathetically low download speeds on a regular basis on the PS3, including one noteworthy one(even though those download speeds only go as fast as the server you're downloading from will allow). I guess I gave you guys too much credit and didn't give your fanboy goggles enough.

TC, you came and started the thread just out right ranting about the download speeds. Sorry, but the way you came off is as much anti sony as any sony fanboy comments in here. Fact is, maybe turn on your ps3 some time and update it. I mean really, some prior planning goes a long way. Also like ANYTHING on the internet, if you had to update when it first hit the psn or during primtime hours well it could take longer. Everything works that way. Heck I know when crysis 2 demo hits Steam or where ever its going to take awhile to download it, cause of traffic.

But literally I get home in the mornings like 6am, and it literally took me 10mins to update the firmware this past time. And only like 1 or 2 mins for the bO's update. So once again prior planning goes a long way.

But you come in here ranting, I'm sure most in here isn't gonig to be on your side lol.

And you are the one refusing to believe the problem could be at your end since people with slower connections download updates faster then you. Yeah I know it can't be possible the error is at your end it MUST be sony's fault
