"Our vision is to make loading screens a thing of the past, enabling creators to build new and unique gameplay experiences"

Great news to hear and I'm especially excited to see the impact it has on future open world games.

Even playing games with an NVMe SSD and a powerful CPU on PC does not get rid of load times. So, he is full of shit. Assets and data need to be loaded and processed. That shit takes time and will not be eliminated completely.

Since when did Sony's movies have loading screens?

Sony should concern itself with gameplay, that way people would have something to look forward to after the game loads :)

Press X to doubt.

But if they can speed up the console boot up that would be really cool.

I didn't know that you only have to have great visuals to be a highly reviewed game. I guess Drive Club must've missed the memo.

A lot of casual gamers don't really see the reality, and people can't always be that informed. Think back to when you were a more casual gamer. With less knowledge about these technical details.

So if sony keeps throwing around buzz words like:

- 8K

- 120fps

- SSD

- no load times

Those things just get stuck in people's head and they create hype, eventhough they will all turn out to be lies (and have turned out to be lies so many times in the past) Sony sells consoles this way.

That is how business is done.

They'll just have you do a low disc & cpu task while loading in a background thread.

What is Naughty Dog gonna do now? The climbing and slow walk sequences were there to mask loading screens. Uncharted gonna be 2 hours confirmed?

It's hard to beat a good loading screen. In fact, loading screens are among the main reasons I buy games. They're one of the few remaining spaces for traditional artists to showcase their work in the medium... and now SONY wants to basically end those artists' careers in the gaming industry, all for the sake of "convenience" (and saving themselves a few dollars in future human costs maybe?).

Well, screw 'em. I want no part in your loading screen-free future, SONY, and I'll probably just give up gaming if this becomes a thing. You hear me, SONY?

Ugh.

Loading screens or hard loading is and has always been dependent on the developer.

Even when games hide them it's obvious. Why does this door take 20 seconds to open? Why is there a crack in the wall and it takes 30 seconds to walk through it? The whole trend of cinematic walking was just secret loading.

I'm not exactly thrilled with the replacements either.

This is going to be like when they were doing away with disc installs, and then devs just made people look at the main menu for 2 hours before they play the game.

Even Santa Monica did the same with God of War 4. Both Santa Monica and Naughty Dog will have no choice but to add more gameplay cause the slow burn loading screens are over.

@BassMan: It's likely that they're referring to strategies devs can use to hide loading screens. With the SSD speeds they're claiming, they might only need to mask under 5 seconds instead of 20-30.

I doubt the possibility of getting rid of loading screens, but they will be able to shorten it. Maybe in the future loading screen will be gone, but for now, they are here to stay.

You would have to pay me for me to leave my country and go to Arizona! I already like 50 meters away from the sea in my country :)

On topic, i don't feed conspiracy theories just because they are cool. An SSD is nothing out of this world....it's something that have been available for years. I love how people don't believe in something as objective as an SSD for PS5, but everyone ate subjective stuff like 'emotion engine', 'the cell', etc

An ambitious but difficult goal to meet. The internal SSD should be very nice but Im using an external SSD on my X and while it has significantly reduced loading times on many games, the benefit is sometimes negated by the fact that high res textures require more loading. The 4K native games that are open word really benefit from the SSD.

Definitely a good goal to have though, I hate loading screens and SSD is awesome I put all my main games on it now.

If they can reduce loading times by a factor 10 that would be great. Loading is too long now in some games, like the Witcher 3 etc. Getting to zero is of course not possible.

i am really interested to see how this will be tackled. there are 2 big problems to solve on this side of things.

1) lengthy installs. are they doing to do anything on the disc drive front? are they going to try to do something on the download front (break up the game so it doesnt have to be completely downloaded to start playing).

2) of course the loading times themselves. what structure is this storage solution going to come in? is it going to be a really fast SSD alone? some sort of hybrid drive? tiered storage? will a portion of the ram be set aside by sony: only to be used as a buffer?

it would be great if they could build a console that makes it much easier for developer to remove or seriously reduce loading times and install times. console manufacturers do need to get back to what separates a console from other gaming devices: put the disc in, play the game. no messin. that should be the target.

There will always be loading screens (well unless you can put the whole game into the Ram I guess?), they just might be shorter or longer depending on how well a game is coded. If the dev sucks like the Anthem team, there will loading screens

Because as someone else said even with a powerful CPU and a really fast nvme loading assets is still a think and i highly doubt Sony will be using an nvme drive and a powerful CPU on a $500 box

"impressively fast loading times, with Marvel’s Spider-Man loading in 0.5 seconds instead of the 15 you’d have to normally wait on a PlayStation 4 Pro."

Real life example. Fast enough for me.
