That would be cool right, i mean the PS3 has a 8 core cell processor, so it will have half the processing power of the PS3, for a handheld its not bad.

Thoughts??

"he four-core processors is a fairly new addition to the rumor mill. The inclusion of a powerful four-core processing system would be a large boost over current iterations, and to it put into perspective, is about half the power of the PS3, which runs on an eight-core"

That's from IGN.

So according to this article it will be half the power of the PS3 simply because it has a 4 core cell, ignoring the fact the PS3 has a graphics card too.

Optomisation. My laptop has a Core 2 Duo CPU. It is much more powerful than a Pentium 4 inside a desktop, yet it takes a fraction of the electricity.

lol, 4 cores on a device barely bigger then an Ipod. If anyone had a semblence of common sense they would realize thats completely ridiculous. Unless of course Sony got their hands on some future tech aka Terminator style.

yeah a C2D isnt 4 cores. Also P4's are the black sheep of Intel processors.

IBM hasn't been one to make the most efficient processors. They were never going to make a portable PowerPC chip, which is why Apple went with Intel. I would be very surprised to see a "Cell" processor operating so efficiently as to work well in a small handheld. That being said- didn't IBM stop investing in this particular direction with their internal processors?.. I is a confused.

first the PS3 only uses 7 cores and 1 of them is reserved for the OS so that leaves only 6 cores for games. then who said the PSP2 cores would be the same cores as the PS3 ?

no need for so much power, Sony in particular needs to rethink its strategy, PSP ismiles head of DS and yet it's miles behind it in terms of success or support ... i say update the security system, add some new and innovative applications, update the hardware slightly, price it for 200-250 $ max ..... that's it.

A sub-200USD starting price would really be nice. To many consumers, the difference between $199 and $249 is pretty substantial.

That sounds like a bad idea. One of the main draws of handheld development is the low cost to make a game.

You don't NEED to take full advantage of the hardware just make a game. There are tons of games on PS3 and 360 that don't take full advantage either. I have seen many games that look like the graphics were upscaled from PS2.

IGN is wrong. Lol. The cell is a single core chip with 8 SPE's. SPE's are not cores.

Perhaps it's a smaller lighter version of the processor that will be used in the PS4. Perhaps the PSP 2 will be their beta test.

The Cell is not 8 core, the SPUs are not proper cores. And there is no way a quad core would work in a handheld, and even if it was possible there would be heat and battery life issues.

It's probably not too difficult if designed well enough. Now this is just an educated guess but they could just use a quad core with a low clock, perhaps running at 250-333 Mhz each. this will keep temps low and processing power 4 times greater than the PSP. Add a small fan in the design and they're good.

But you do need to know how to code for it to make the games not run like junk; and cell processors are notoriously hard and expensive to optimize for.

How has the psp failed?:? Last I checked,it has sold over 60 million units and has some pretty good games out there. Its the only system that has hung in there with anything Nintendo has thrown out. Not too many companies who got in the handheld business can say that. Just because it does not sell at the level the DS does, does not mean its a failure.

Actually, I think the main reason they are adapting this architecture is to mimic the anti piracy measures on the PS3, which uses SPEs to encrypt and decrypt everything, making it extremely time consuming to hack. I'm sure that the rampant piracy on the PSP has left Sony in the shock for quite a while. Still, IGNorance is not to be trusted, especially when they are calling the Cell an "8 core processor"

I dont think its an elusive dream. Battery tech is always improving, and if the psp2 is designed right I think it can easily have great battery life. I have a GO and get around 6 hours of continous battery use depending on the game or media Im using.

I was thinking the same thing, the PSP its the first handheld that sold that many that doesn't has mario on it. So I think sony did good with the PSP, but Nintendo did excellent with the DS, and now with the 3DS they will be on top again.

@coltsfan4ever, Yes, the PSP has sold 60 million, but you're looking at a static number. Consider the pace at which it sold those 60 million units. It took 5 years for it to crack that number, whereas the Wii, a console released three years ago has already breached 70 million units. Moreover, the PSP did not do what Sony promised us it would do, one of it- pathetic third party support, with games droughts that last for years at end, poor third party support, crappy online, stupid multimedia functonality, poor portability, UMD Movies failed, AND the PSP did not become the market leader that Sony (and analysts) were expecting it to be. Software sales on the PSP suck, with the highest selling PSP game at a easly 5 million units. Seriously, the PSP is in every sense of the word, a failure. In and of itself, it's not, 60 million is very impressive, but heck, we don't ever evaluate anything in isolation, and the PSP, going by context and the prevailing market conditions, is an utter failure.

increasing the standard for the handheld will force devs to work harder. would you want to release a game that looks like dmc 1 when all the other games look like gow 3 ? no, that wouldnt be profitable as consumers would expect their games to look like gow3. thats why devs release smaller games on the ps store.

And both of those claims are with continous use or even half? Im sure most of those battery life claims are for standby. Especially with the iphone. Not sure though.

CPU power draw is nowhere close to GPU.

Example: Top of the line Core i7s have 140W draw. GTX 480 has an average power consumption of 362.9 in a benchmark at Tom's Hardware.

Ok so a GTX480 consumes more than twice the power of an i7??

[QUOTE="charizard1605"][QUOTE="coltsfan4ever"]I dont think its an elusive dream. Battery tech is always improving, and if the psp2 is designed right I think it can easily have great battery life. I have a GO and get around 6 hours of continous battery use depending on the game or media Im using.

Contrast that with the iPhone (30 hours, wtf) or the DS (19 hours continuous). It's not very impressive, is it?

And both of those claims are with continous use or even half? Im sure most of those battery life claims are for standby. Especially with the iphone. Not sure though.

As a iPhone owner that 30Hours battery life must be from the phone just sitting there if you play games on it especially some games really suck the living day lights outta of the thing, its a joke.
