thinking that your standard controller should work properly with a game you buy (weren't gifted) is an example of entitlement?

CaseyWegner

What standard controller are you talking about? For this game, the standard controller is the xbox360 controller. The game was designed for console. They even mentioned it in the manual: http://cdn.steampowered.com/Manuals/211420/DARKSOULS_PC_MANUAL_ANZ.pdf Page 7: "Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition was created to play using the Xbox 360® controller." I'm well aware that kb/m control for this game is nearly unplayable, and they've done a bad job @ binding key & mouselook (hopefully a fix in the future). However, people should control the game as how it's meant to be controlled, just like no one plays DMC with kb/m.

i'm referring to the standard controller for the pc. it's not a 360 gamepad. does it say "created to play using the 360 controller" on the game box or just in the manual? steam has no mention of it.

Ok, I admit the thing in manual is easily missed out. If you referring to kb/m, then as I said, it's horrible. It just that I'm aware this type of game is best played with a controller, and I have my controller (as many serious PC gamers). I just use the controller all the time so I don't feel that much annoyed at the kb/m control; hence my overall experience with the game was good. Definitely different for other people.

Still, for others that dont own a controller and dont know how to mod, this release was not a good experience at all.

I actually had to go over to my friends place (who just got a gamign pc last week, his first one) and lend him my 360 controller and show him how to mod games. The icons kept showing up as 360 icons when all he had was K+M was very confusing for him.

A PC version of a game SHOULD always have K+M controls that work imo, and the icons that show up should be for what ever control input you are using.

Still, once we got him those two mods and gave him my 360 controller he was pretty stoked, it just took a little bit to get it all set up for him and show him how things work.

I love Dark Souls, just on release day this was not a very good port (for many reasons), but not thanks to a wonderful modder the game is great and the best version around (if you have a controller and dont mind modding some things).

For me it would not be as big of a deal as I know how to mod and I own a 360 controller, but for some people they dont have a controller and dont have the experience with pcs yet to know how to mod it can be a pain in the ass.

I am just glad that this modder did such a good job :)

Dont like the idea of having to rely on modders to fix broken parts of your game, but its not the first game and wont be the last. Still, even games that I love, if its a average ot bad port I think people should atleast know about it and be warned (if you dont own a controller would be best idea to stay awy from this game atm,etc..).

Hmmm SR2 was pretty bad (a lot of people can't even get the game to play), but this looks to be pretty bad too.

i have and use a 360 controller too. however, i know it's not the standard controller. many third person games like dark souls have been made to work perfectly fine with a kb&m so it is a legitimate problem. what if it had been the other way around? what if a console port controlled horribly with a gamepad and pretty much required buying something else to play it with and with no real warning? that would not be viewed favorably either.

First of all it was a figure of speech... second of all didnt pc gamers petition (beg) for the game that had no intention of being ported to pc.

You are correct. I would not have had the game, and From would not have my $40 if they did not port the game. They did port the game, in a very crappy manner, so now I still don't have the game, they still don't have my $40, and all is right in the world.

Sounds to me like the game runs ok, just not optimized for pc along with some neglect to certain areas.

Your "beggar" analogy doesn't make sense. Beggars can't be choosers, but customers are choosers.
If the product isn't up to the customer's standards, you should expect them to complain.

I guess it comes down to optimization. I'm not a computer programmer, but it seems like it would be much easier to code for a platform with a set hardware configuration, instead of getting it running on millions of differently assembled PCs. I know a lot of other devs have did it, but we all know Namco Bandai isn't the most prolific developers out there.

Can you guys join, play co op, pvp together on PC version easily? PLEASE SUGGEST,IMPORTANT

I've had no problems with the online so far.

I have, it seems to be just as bad on PC as it was on the consoles concerning MP. I have yet to be invaded and I've been summoned around 4 times. That's pretty bad considering I already have 9 hours in the game. My NAT is also open and UPnP is being used.

Yep, just as bad as the console version. I've spent several hours just trying to get my buddy into my game. Its getting really frustrating since I thought it wouldn't be this way on PC.

The game doesn't even allow proper mouse and keyboard support. If I wanted to play the game with a controller, I would have just picked it up for my PS3.

Stupid analogy. All the pc gamers I know have either a 360, ps3 or both. Of course we prefer to play on pc where 60 fps and the choice or resolution is the norm. Something thats just plain expected out of any pc game. I personally chose to buy Sleeping Dogs instead and will buy Souls during a $5 Steam sale.

I was waiting on a price drop, then the game was announced on PC, and I decided to just wait so I could play the game on a mouse and keyboard, yes. I played Demons Souls on the PS3, and the game would be much better with a mouse and keyboard, as long as the controls were implemented in some sane manner.

[QUOTE="Advid-Gamer"][QUOTE="Hexagon_777"]My housemate got the game and was indeed very annoyed, despite my warnings. He ended up getting a controller, and the resolution mod doesn't work for him. He's still playing the game, because hey, he spent the money, but I don't see why people shouldn't complain and give feedback to seemingly incompetent developers.

rzepak

Maybe he didnt install it correctly, seems to work very well for most people. try re downloading it and make sure it is the latest version

The only reason the thing may not work is because your friend did not turn off in-game AA and motion blur.

Thanks, you guys. Considering how he's studying to be an electronic engineer at university, is well versed in the ways of the internet, has been a PC gamer for years, and is Asian, one would have expected him to come up with a solution sooner. He's a lot happier now to say the least. Thanks again.
