Oblivion came out 5 years ago. Why does everyone forget it?

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic came out at the same time as Oblivion and completely demolished it, combat-wise. I remember heaps of threads back then hoping that the fifth Elder Scrolls game would have Dark Messiah's combat.

Five years on, and Skyrim just uses Oblivion's clunky combat with a few tweaks (and Oblivion's combat felt outdated five years ago). Sure, they borrowed Dark Messiah's execution kills, and added a second hand, etc...but the base combat is still the same.

There were even more heaps of threads wishing Dark Messiah was open world. Some people are expecting the perfect game. Like GTA with Gran Tursimo driving, Gears shooting mechanics and Mortal combat melee. Aint gonna happen. Games like Elder Scrolls and GTA are about the sum of its parts.

seriously every time a game becomes popular there appears the retarded trolls, omg i don't like, so its overrated!

Krelian-co

Not really, only if the game is terrilble

Amalur is one of the worst games i have played by miles, terrible looking world, mediocre combat, worst design i have seen in a game, looks like a MMO everywhere and is as generic as it gets

So, obviously when such a terrible game gets popular, some people will wonder why, i think is fair to ask, since the game is terrible in every way

People defending that sh*tty combat Skyrim has, are full of sh*t... Its atrocious and i'm not exaggerating. Its so bad that i can't see even the most hardcore skyrim fanboy defending it... This kind of combat system could've been made over 15 years ago and wouldn't be anything special, that how bad it is, its SH*T. If Bethesda's next game has the same animations i think i won't even bother because to me this kind of pathetic combat decreases the fun of exploring the world.silversix_

Are you joking? 15 years ago there were Black Isle RPGs. Of course Skyrim's combat would have been nothing special :P

on topic: game gets famouse because its good, then haters say its overrated, always have, always will be like that, doesn't matter what people here say skyrim was loved by most people and reviewers alike, the scores reflect it, doesn't matter if a few "game experts" say it isn't good.

Seriously? I think Reckoning's combat system is down there with Fable 3.

Agreed, it seems as generic and terrible as Fable's, but with more stats

But stats alone dont make a good combat system

Dark SOuls has the best combat system i have played with, none other comes even miles close

Amalur is nothing like those games, it is a mix of Fable minus the art/design and a generic MMO

I liked the demo. It reminded me of the good parts of fable but greatly improved.

No where near the best.

How is it down there with fable 3? It's clear the combat gets more indepth when you progress through the game. Skyrim's combat is beyond and I mean beyond abysmal and never changes from start to end.

Reckoning's combat is 10x better than Skyrim. But it doesn't take much to beat Skyrim's craptastic combat though, almost every other RPG has better combat than any Bethesda's RPG.

I've been saying Skyrim's combat is s*** since the beginning. So have a lot of other gamers.

it simply kills the game and makes it almost unplayable, people would rather craft armor and explore areas than engage in combat.

thats when you know your combat system is flawed.

The combat really looks nothing special, hell it looks a little rigid. The 3rd person view, cartoon look and title-and-health-bar-over-enemy's-head gives it even less of an impact.

Also if Skyrim's combat is considered terrible, how did you people get through Bioshock, Deus Ex, Morrowind, System Shock, ME2 and other such games? Am I the only one who liked the combat?

cyborg100000

But all of those games you mentioned DO have better combat than skyrim. :|

You can love or hate amalur, but either way you have to admit that its a fact that the combat is quite easily above Skyrims. Atleast It has tons of combos, moves, and timing involved as opposed to mindlessly spamming 1 attack like in Skyrim.

I have not played the game or anything but maybe someone can give me a example on how the general combat / gameplay is. I looked at a video and it did not look that "special" to me. But then again... Ofc it beats Skyrim... Everything beats skyrims combat ;)

Man I'm looking forward to Amalur, but that guy is completely overblowing the game's qualities. He already said the game's thoroughly better than Dragon Age: Origins, Dark Souls, and Skyrim. He also said that the progression in this game is atypical of open-world games in that it goes from A to B, but quickly dismissed the idea of the game being more linear than Skyrim. Que? Going from A to B isn't more linear? I've played the demo for myself and saw what the map was like ffs.

Amalur's is still fun, and while Skyrim's combat is pretty 'straightforward', I find it has a really good feel. Aiming a bow at a wolf in Skyrim just feels 'organic'... er.

I agree. I like the straighforwardness of Skyrims combat. It fits with everything else in the game. The thing I like about Skyrim is that it doesn't need flashy combat to make the game interesting, that's what the world is for. I think exploring the world is supposed to be far more interesting than slashing someone with a sword or blasting them with fire.

Sounds like you only go sword and board, try some illusion + One handed. Or even more fun, try Conjuration + Alteration + One Handed. Skyri'ms combat IS boring if you make it boring. DOn't go pure magic or pure melee or pure stealth, go a mix for the most fun.

Let's not get crazy here. Morrowind's combat was atrocious. If Skyrim is bad, then Morrowind represents the bottom-of-the-barrel combat system. A hodge-podge of action and dice rolling that simply was laborious to use, had absolutely zero weight or sense of speed, nonexistant hit-detection and reaction and was suprisingly static despite the heavy stat based influence.

The problem is the majority of quests send you into dungeons to kill things, and killing those things feels like a boring chore. It isn't fun knowing you have to go through twenty bandits or vampires to get to a word of power or some named weapon as a reward, when the melee combat system manages to be worse than TF2's melee combat. Please don't try to excuse the terrible combat by saying exploration is more important, because if you actually want to complete content in the game, you have to do a lot of sword-flailing.

It's not bad at all, I played the demo and I was having a blast. I can only imagine how much more crazy the combos can get in the full version. People who bash KoA:R are all delusional Skyrim fanboys who refuse to believe that their game has crappy, lazy combat.

Exactly.

And just how does Deus Ex have better combat than Skyrim or even ME2 (I'm assuming we're talking about the melee system in ME2 which was indeed quite bad)?

Skyrim's combat isn't the worst of all time, it's bad yes but if you scrape the barrel even harder you will find worse combat than that of Skryim.

Well I'm lost for words at that. Anyway Skyrim's combat is no where near as abysmal as Morrowinds or System Shock 2's. At least it feels somewhat meaty, allows you to block and power/stun/swipe attack. Sure it could be a hell of a lot better, I think Bethesda should have ramped up the combat more than they did, but it's at step above Oblivion and the game has far more attributes to it than its combat (better than the sum of its parts).

How many 3rd person RPGs have you seen with combat like Amalaur? I've seen so many since a decade ago it just doesn't impress me. Combat for me feels better in a 1st person view, isn't exxagerated, animations looking smooth and without a screen swamped with health bars and titles. All this just takes away the immersion if you ask me, same goes for The Witcher, ME or any 3rd person game.

Seriously? I think Reckoning's combat system is down there with Fable 3.

Dark Messiah + Blade of Darkness + Mount & Blade >>>>>>>>>>>> (x1000) >>>>>>>>>>>Skyrim >>> ( x 100) >>>Fable 3 + Reckoning

lordreaven

How is it down there with fable 3? It's clear the combat gets more indepth when you progress through the game. Skyrim's combat is beyond and I mean beyond abysmal and never changes from start to end.

Sounds like you only go sword and board, try some illusion + One handed. Or even more fun, try Conjuration + Alteration + One Handed. Skyri'ms combat IS boring if you make it boring. DOn't go pure magic or pure melee or pure stealth, go a mix for the most fun.

Absolutely agree with this! The combat in Skyrim is what you make it. There are so many things to play with that it becomes a game in itself. Also, you gain new moves with melee weapons if u dump points in those categories.

I did mix it up (went archer/resto/frost), and I still found it very lacking and boring. Lacking doesn't mean bad but when everything is so effortless it makes it a very dull experience. For instance, Dark Souls have very simplistic combat (ignore what the fanboys say) but the enemy/encounter design more than makes up for it and adds to the combat. Skyrim's enemies are largely braindead and the combat is way too simple for such stupid A.I.

Played the demo. Doesn't seem like anything special. Combat was simplistic and straightforward, but enjoyable. Better than Skyrim's sure, but that isn't saying much.

From the demo I prefer Skyrim's combat greatly, but it's already been said enough times that Amalur's going to get more complex than the demo showed after a while.

I'm not trying to excuse the combat, I said the world exploration is more important to me. When I play Skyrim, I'm not going around doing quests all the time and when I do I mix up the combat to keep it interesting to me. Also I'm playing it on the PC so, mods. I'm really not concerned what other people think about it. It satisfies me. Like I said, I don't need it to be flashy.

What about if you play a thief character and use bow as main weapon combat? Im not really sure how to improve drawing a bow a shooting an arrow and as far as that goes, same with daggers. I love sneaking up behind people and either doing 30X dmg or cutting their throat.

The bow works so well in the game. I have a nice enchanted ebony bow to do ranged damage and then if I need finish anybody off, I have several options, that is if my companion doesn't charge in and do it first. Skyrim's combat works as well as you upgrade your character. If you spread your characters skills too thin, then your character won't be good at anything. I noticed people had this same problem in Fallout 3 and NV as well.

Lack of focus. I tend to know what I want to play as and develop my character based on that.

Sneak is broken as hell in Skyrim, makes the game boring imo. I blame the weak AI on that though.

ChubbyGuy40

Skyrim's combat is so much sh*t it's not funny. Reckoning beats it 10 times over, like a red-head step child.

Because everyone wants assurance that whatever stupid game they bought is indeed the best game ever created.
