Scalebound, the much-hyped Platinum-developed action game that was previously scheduled for Xbox One and PC, is in trouble and may be cancelled, according to several sources.

We expect the official announcement shortly. When reached by Kotaku today, Microsoft sent over a brief statement: “We’ll have more to share on ‘Scalebound’ soon.”

From what we hear, Scalebound, an ambitious game directed by iconic Twitter blocker and Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya, had been in development hell for a long time. Microsoft first announced the game nearly three years ago, during the Xbox press conference at E3 2014. It rose to the top of dozens of “Most Anticipated Games” lists but was delayed several times.

We hadn’t heard or seen anything of Scalebound in recent months, and it was curiously missing from an Xbox Wire post last week that talked about the future of Xbox One. Microsoft has also removed the official Scalebound page from the Xbox website.

Think it's true? Do you care? I was looking forward to it, hope it still comes out.

Eh, gotta say I don't really care either way. I was interested, but when they showed it at E3 last year it just looked awful, far from the quality I'd typically associate with Platinum.

Sure, it's in clear need of a lot of polish but the concept and gameplay seemed to be already taking shape quite nicely.

Ouch.. im a big fan of Kamiya's games and this was basically the only Xbox exclusive i was interested in. Hope Platinum survives

To be honest though, true or not I'm not in the slightest bothered by this news. Scalebound is not a game that has me exited.

I would be very disappointed by this as I'm a big fan of Kamiya's stuff. I wouldn't be surprised, as the E3 footage of the game did look, well rough, but it wasn't exactly a low key project. And on some level I question if Microsoft is ever willing to take that type of gambit on these projects. A game being in dev hell doesn't necessarily need to be a death sentence, and I'd rather the pub back their dev and let them finish the job. Especially in Microsoft's case, since they have the least diverse lineup this side of Activision.

Good riddance. Worst protagonist ever! Remake the game without that annoying douche.

I remember ReCore and Scalebound were the two announcements that I said were most interesting of all the reveals that first came out. ReCore came out as generic trash, a low budget 360 game bumped up to 1080p for Xbox 1. Scalebound looked pretty rough at E3, but at least this game seemed to have some potential. It dropped way off my list of "anticipated" games, but to just outright cancel it? Xbox 3rd party deals just falling apart one after another. Guess that's what happens when your system is a flop.

Well, Microsoft PR would be all over this if it were NOT true.

I was worried with the last trailer I watched for the game. I noticed a bunch of player gamertags helping the protagonist fight a boss, which leads me to believe this might end up being an online co op only game. I want a traditional sp campaign game, not some trendy co op crap.

This one stings. Granted it hasn't looked so hot from a technical side when shown, but I thought it still looked like a lot of fun.

As in: optional like Destiny, where you can play by yourself and kick rocks around in the desert, just don't expect to experience the crux of the game's content by yourself, optional? Hmm...

And lems think sales are not important. No one will be making games for the xbone if it doesn't sell. MS should just discontinue the xbox and leave the space for someone else.

Now Scalebound get's scrapped, last year it was Fable Legends, then Quantum Break sucked, then Recore disappointed.

Never cared for where this was headed and am still bewildered that the Xbox base was interested in it.

That is a real bummer. I was only hyped for it because of the developer. The game never looked very appealing to me. What a shame.

I hope its true, it would save Lemmings from another embarrassing FLOP Thread.

They've not much else to look forward to...

Anyways I hope Platinum Games gets their shit together and makes another Vanquish.

@Heil68: I was looking forward to it as well. But not surprised. I had signed up for the Scalebound community updates and Kamiya hasn't updated anything on it since Jan 2016. Kinda smelled this coming. It was a great idea (love dragons!!) but it seems it may have been more than could be done realistically.

MS owns the IP, so if they parted ways with Platinum then some other developer could finish it.
