Actually, I sorta hope the pricing model goes this route and provides more options this way. Selling the console at what may seem an exorbitant amount ($600-$700 or more) would allow the manufacturer to avoid selling at a loss and also offer a very attractive sticker price of, say, $250-$300 (which would really spur Nintendo into action with the Wii U) with a two-year subscription to PSN or XBL (monthly price of around $15-$20). Once the two years are up, everybody is already used to paying monthly for online services and you could start to pitch a tiered service model that could range in price, either monthly or annually. Works for Sony implementing the pay system without totally pissing off their userbase and allows MS to increase their profit margins for XBL (though it may require a long-term perspective to flirt with this kind of pricing structure). Why not just go the cell phone-plan route? You buy a device at about 1/3 of its retail price but you sign a contract for ~2 years to the providers plan (Live or PSN+)

Right.. cause Sony should obviously take a loss just because.. they are a business and need to make money. Why post stupid topics?I remember when Sony used to care about gamers and take big losses on all their consoles. Sad to see this.

No, for two reasons: 1) I don't care to own a Wii U & 2) I'm simply intrigued by the option of the pricing method which I think is a viable option for some and a wise business venture. A high school kid may not be able to shell out $600-$700 out of pocket initially, but $300 on contract? People already do it for phones, I don't see why not for consoles. Me though, I'm committed enough to paying more upfront than contracting to monthly payments that cost me more in the long run (actually, kinda depends on how much more). Regardless, I suspect I'll be doing it anyway in some form or another with XBL or PSN. I can't imagine Sony continuing to offer its service for free. For them, it's all about how to go about it so as to not rustle the jimmies of their fans too drastically. Why not just go the cell phone-plan route? Day 1.Worth every penny.Thank you Sony.:)
I think this is a very smart move. I was hoping Sony was able to get killer deal with AMD so the price of the components would not be so high. If Nintendo does one thing right is not taking massives losses every gen with hopes of ROI. Microsoft was able to offset some of their losses through Xbox Live. At least Sony isn't selling a POS like the Wii U. If it retails for $450 it may not have massive sales early, but Sony won't take massive losses either...and that is smart business decision. Sony should not have to subsidize our gaming hobbies...

It will be between $500 and $600 and far too expensive
Is this what journalism is now? Did anyone read the quote from Sony?
"Unlike PS3, we are not planning a major loss to be incurred with the launch of PS4. At the time we developed PS3, we made a lot of in-house investments to develop the chip, the Cell chip This time, yes we have a team working on chip development, but we already have existing technology to incorporate and also product investment and all the facilities will now be invested by our partners, other foundries, so we dont have to make all the investment in-house."
Look at the title of the article "Play$tation 4: Sony announces the PS4 wont be sold at loss"
I can't stand the media.
Xbox Infinity with subscription is said to have cheaper parts and is $500 with subscription.[QUOTE="ActicEdge"]
It will not be $600. It absolutely will not cost that much. I'm gonna bet on $450.
robotapple
MS is eating a loss on it too.
Another $599.99 PS4 is looking more likely.
$599 is unlikely i.e. AMD Jaguar's chip size is similar to ARM Cortex A15 and the GPU chip size is around 212 mm^2. PS4's APU chip size is similar to AMD Trinity APU.
How is $450 delusional ? They don't have to pay the huge premium on blue ray (drive) like they did last time + they made a much cheaper choice in terms of hardware. This has been explained by many users on this thread (and yet you still scream "buh buh it will for sure be $500-600").$450 is delusional.

$450 isn't some consipracy (cheaper PC like hardware/architecture + not being as powerfull for the time as the ps3 + not having to pay out of the ass for blue ray = less price for both sony and the consumer).

PC can be cheap or expensive. Remember, AMD plans to upgrade GCN with AMD Volcanic Islands Q4 2013 and the older GCNs would attract less premium. This is the nature of PC's near annual updates. AMD has stated that both Xbox Next and PS4 would be using AMD 2013 road map IP blocks i.e. that covers AMD Southern Islands, Sea Islands and Volcanic Islands.it's no way going to be as dear as the ps3, no doubt about that. they have made there system so it's cheaper, the ps3 cost so much because they used different companies for different parts, and instead there using just 1 company which makes everything cheaper and not as many people to pay out to. the price is going to be 399/499.

It will not be close to $600. That would go against all the positive changes they have made with the PS4.

HD 7850's chip size already smaller than 1st gen NVIDIA RSX.
---
1st gen NVIDIA RSX = 258 mm^2
1st gen IBM CELL = 230 mm^2
Total chip size: 488 mm^2
----
Semi-custom AMD Jaguar with 8 cores with Radeon HD 7850
AMD Jaguar CPU cores: 3.1 mm^2 + 2.1 mm^2 L2 cache = 5.2 mm^2 x 8 cores = 41.6 mm^2 (28nm process tech)
AMD Radeon HD 7850 (16 CU GpGPU) = 212 mm^2 (28nm process tech)
Total chip size: 253.6 mm^2
AMD Trinity APU's chip size is 228mm^2 (with 32nm process tech) i.e. AMD Piledriver (designed by AMD's green team) is not efficient with transistor density.
----------------
On transistors packing skills...
With 28nm process tech, AMD Radeon HD 7870 has a chip size of 212 mm^2 (packing 2.8 billion transistors) and delivers 2560 GFLOPS. Density of 13.2 billion transistors per mm^2.
Based on CELL's 115 mm^2 @ 45 nm process tech, 28 nm version of CELL would have a chip size of 71 mm^2. Density of ~3.34 million transistors per mm^2.
With 45 nm process tech, IBM Power 7, has a chip size of 567 mm^2 (packing 1.2 billion transistors). Density of ~2.12 million transistors per mm^2
With 28 nm process tech, IBM Power 7, has a chip size of 352.8 mm^2 (packing 1.2 billion transistors). Density of ~3.40 million transistors per mm^2
IBM is consistent with inferior transistors per mm^2 skills.
Are you considering the 720 standalone model will be $500, sold at a loss by MS?
robotapple
Are you considering that you're talking out of your ass? Seriously. Officially speaking, the "720" (if that's even what it ends up being called) doesn't even exist yet. There has been literally nothing revealed. Certainly not a retail price, and/or information regarding whether or not MS will be making a profit.
Why are you spewing a completely baseless rumor like it's freakin gospel?

In your wet dreams maybe. In reality PS4 is gonna cost 399 and 499. Causalbox is expensive because kinect is part of the package.
it cost around 80 or more for 8gigsTessellation
Which is dirt cheap.
after the PS4 it will become cheaper since is being manufacture in mass.Tessellation
-implying it's not already being manufactured in mass, and hasn't been for years.
It was poor wording on my part (I was basically saying that the ps4's GPU was about as powerfull as a $250-300 card at launch). That won't be the case this time (the GTX 660 SC which is a tad faster than a stock 7870 will be like $140 brand new by the end of the year) 7850 (same chip as 7870 with 4 disabled CUs for yield issues) cost about $139 with 1 GB VRAM. AMD still has to pay 7870 type chip regardless if 16 or 20 CUs are working.[QUOTE="Wasdie"]

How would that be smart?
People complained about the 599$ PS3 launch price so what makes you think they would settle for such price tags?
The reason why PS1 and PS2 were so successful was also the 299$ launch price tag.

The xbox has a friggin next generation kinect built in and you say cheaper parts? think man. This is a key stance on why part of me thinks the lower spec rumors are true, unless of course they take a huge loss on the console. The biggie is that the Xbox doesn't do well in the east--ps4 could get a jump start because of this.
