Sorry for bump, but I'm on important Halo-defending business. :P
Halo's soundtrack is not that good. It had a memorable theme and that is all. Its composer gets far too much hype imo.
Cool soundtrack, yes... but not amazing.

That's one reasons I liked the soundtrack so much more than others - it WASN'T just one memorable song.
Restricting myself to Halo 3, there's plenty of good songs apart from the theme (or One Final Effort on the soundtrack); Three Gates, Honourable Intentions, Last of the Brave, Greatest Journey, No More Dead Heroes, Behold a Pale Horse, Farthest Outpost, This Is Our Land, Wake Me Up When You Need Me, This Is The Hour.... If I had the time I could list all the individual 'themes' and provide examples, but I'd be here a long time.
Gregorian chanting followed by 80's guitar rifts. When I first played it it seemed they tried to capture the feel of this opening. (or any one of a million movies that use the chanting to symbolise something "Holy".)FragTycoon
Lol, I don't see what you're point is? Choir's are often employed to produce a 'heavenly' feeling, and it works. Just because it's a commonly employed technique discredits all Halo music? There isn't even any chorus in the Halo 3 version of the theme.
Besides, there's such a large array of instruments and styles used in the Halo soundtracks that the 'generic' argument won't really spin.
There are plenty better than Halo's, at least to my ears... that said Halo has a good soundtrack.
For example, I really like Diablo's music... it's very atmospheric and fits the game perfectly.
I'm glad so many people love music in games as much as I do. To me it matters as much, if not more, then visuals.
Mario Galaxy 1 had some great tunes and I'm sure MG2 is the same
Oblivion - sometimes I would just let the game sit in the backround while I did stuff at home (especially the piano in the start menu)
Most of the people here already named many great soundtracks, so I'll just leave it at those two.
There are a few soundtracks which are at the top of the quality meter; none of which are "superior" to each other, but are on the same level in what they try to accomplish. Series that come to mind are Halo, MGS, Mass Effect, Uncharted and Mario.
So no, there's soundtrack better than Halo. Yet it isn't better than the one's listed above. It's part of a group of stand outs which are all on the same level in what they are trying to achieve for their respective games.
The WoW soundtrack is painfully underrated. It has amazing ambient and epic tracks that really fit the mood of specific locales in the game. princeofshapeir
I agree, my fav is the fiddle duet in Grizzly Hills.
Lord of the Rings Online has some amazing music as well, I just renewed my account today. I love playing healers and the fact I get to heal with music is AWESOME!!! The fact that you can pull out an instrument at any time and play actual music with your keyboard may put it on top of the list for me.

"Arthas, my Son" is one of my favorites, too. It's amazing.Best Halo songs:
The Farthest Outpost (Halo 3)
Peril (Halo 2)
In Amber Clad (Halo 2) -- Maybe my favorite
Under Cover of Night (Halo 1)
My Home Reach (Halo Reach) -- I hope it's a real Reach track, it sounds AMAZING
Halo has a great sound track but I like Chrono trigger, Chrono cross, MGS4 and Hitman: blood money more

Can't forget The Covenant Dance from Halo 1. It just kicked it at the right time, it was epic. For me, this is the floods theme tune.
Dunno if anyone has said it yet, but both Guilty Gear and Blazblue have amazing soundtracks. Here's some songs from the Guilty gear series.
Keep the Flag Flying
Still in the Dark
Suck a Sage
Wow with so many soundtrack threads people are still forgetting these:
Super Metroid - Brinstar
Castlevania SOTN - Lost Paintings
Trap Gunner - Ending
ZOE2 - Beyond the Bounds
Seriesly, too many young gamers...
Umm, there are plenty. ACII for starters. ME2 as well.

ME2 is my favorite game this gen, and I STILL don't think it even comes close to touching Halo 1,2,3 OST's.
What song beats this one? Or any other Halo song!

I like the Halo soundtracks but I prefer Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy IV-IX, Kingdom Hearts, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, Donkey Kong Country, Sonic 1-3&K, Baten Kaitos and Zelda: A Link to the Past.
I'm sure I'm missing a few other games but there are just too many great videogame soundtracks.
The all time best OSTs to me are Mass Effect (both of them, but the vigil and suicide mission ones are probably my favourite). I particularly enjoyed the OSTs from Red Dead as of recently. Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 have good soundtracks, particularly the police station and street themes from resident evil 2 & 3. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games have great ambience themes. FF7 had good themes for it's time but now it's kind of cheesy and MIDI audio doesn't sound great. Finally I can't believe Mirrors Edge hasn't gotten more mention, the music was what stopped me from hating the game.
I think the best composer I've heard is Jesper Kyd though... In Hitman Contracts and Freedom Fighters he was absolutely amazing.
The same games keep being repeated...usually the AAE/AAAE games.
I do agree that some of them have aWesome soundtrack (being huge budget games, we expect no less after all).
But there are other "lesser known" games that do have great atmospheric tracks too.
I present thee : GOTHIC 3! The game deserved some good bashings (at launch) for its almost unplayable state but it had a pretty amazing score.
Soundtrack 1
Soundtrack 2 / Slow Version
Should be good annitional tracks for those who likes to collect good game soundtracks.
