7 at best, 6 probably, 5 at worst (maybe?). On online-centric game with lacking content and online capabilities is going to get flagged down hard on GS. I hope the gameplay lives up the potential, but we'll see at 11 PM (EST for me). I think the whole reason the demo is so weirdly structured is due to the fact that it's online only and while typically having 20 usages is the norm for Nintendo demos, I guess they thought it'd kill first impressions and purchasing decision as the online community may be lacking in a system like that so they limit you to an hour where there will be a huge influx of players at one time.

@Blabadon: Yup... i hope the full game allows for dual analogs and not just pan the camera with the right stick.

I lost two matches BADLY (30ish to 70ish) was winning the third one but got booted. Joined another and got booted.

@Kaze_no_Mirai: Hit + in the menu between games. Unfortunately you can only tweak sensitivity between games.

@Blabadon: Does that help? I have issues moving the entire gamepad. I liked gyro controls in Zelda on 3DS but here it can get pretty hectic and it's a pain. Sucks that you can't change classes during the game either.

Splattershot Jr. is OP imo, but fun to play with, though the range of the weapons are... awkward.

Splat Charger imo is awful even from long range

Splattershot is basically the same as Jr. just with different spec. attacks, fun still

Splat Roller is pretty good, but OP at times too.

The minigames in between matches are pretty cool, except there's only one, game saves the progress throughout, bit dull, but a fun distraction nonetheless. Plus, I'm getting almost spontaneous connections.

I just wish Nintendo reversed most of the delayed content and communication things, though to be honest it was fine without it, matches are very short anyways. They have pointless little in-game chat options like "Boo-yah!" or "Come on!" :P

The use of the gyroscope for aiming was a bit annoying at times, but I thought it worked well for what it was, I'm sure the Wii U pro controller and other options will be supported by release. Never mind, Blabadon confirmed you can change controls. :P

I think the game will be somewhat disappointing in what it could have been, but it still has a lot of addicting potential here.

So...I played Splatoon. 4-5 matches, actually. Here are my thoughts.

....Eh.

The motion controls were a pain at first, but I got used to them. Just press Y while your turning. It's absolute crap that you can't switch between both controls-in game like in Mario Kart 8. I was always under the impression that you could? WTF?

The weapons...The two machine guns are awesome. Aming is...Meh, unless your close. No zooming in..yet. I guess they're more for splattering the stage. The Splat Roller sucks, IMO. I can't do anything with it. It's great for covering ground, but that's it. I can' t seem to kill anyone with it. The sniper rifle is...Really cool. It's good for killing people with. But It's annoying if your trying to splatter ink around...You know, to win.

Problem is....The weapons I've used so far....Are all good for ONE play style. The brush focuses on splattering, and the sniper focuses on killing. I guess the machine gun is a bit of both. The fact that you can't switch between weapons is very annoying because you never know what your teammates will have. And MY teammates either focus too much on splattering, or killing and NOT splattering.

I dunno. If the story mode is just about splattering and jumping...Ah my god...Nintendo dropped the ball with this one.

Not terrible, pretty fun, but it feels like it's lacking what makes other online shooters so fun. 6.5 or 7/10. Gotta play the full game, but I don't see it being much different.

I should mention that... I PLAYED THE EXACT SAME LEVEL 3 TIMES IN A ROW.

Hm, seems like most people are disappointed.. I'm more hyped than before.. The game is great... The only issue i've come across so far is that the splat roller is seriously too powerful lol..Most teams ( and myself included in this) had 4 people using and straight up dominating 60 percent of the ground each match lol..

Played for an hour straight. I enjoyed it and thought the gameplay was really good. Problem is, I think it'll get old way too fast. Not something I'd be willing to pay $60 for right now.

Also, it plays a lot better when you turn the motion controls off.

I had a blast with it. Once I got the gyroscopic aiming down I was mowing down fools like nobody's business. Sneak attacks, Squid mode across the map, and laying waste to all I see? Beautiful. I wanted to hate the game, but I have to say it will be a great AAE.

Definitely started off good but I got bored real quick and maybe even quicker than Titanfall. The camera controls are horrendous and I am not a fan of the gamepad. It seemed like a support for the pro would be simple minus the tilting which I rarely used at all.

It was actually quite fun but is definitely going to need more modes, maps, weapons, etc to have lasting appeal.

Also gyro controls are shit, tried to get used to them but ended up turning them off. (might go back to them tho)

Even with a lack of release content I can see the game getting a 7 just on the gameplay and originality alone.

It was pretty fun imo. I only played with the gyro controls as I dislike dual analog (always been more of a mouse + keyboard kind of guy). It was good for the most part, although it helps to make regular use of the Y button to reset the camera.

I only had time to play 3 matches, two of which my team won. It is quite fun, and in some ways this game appears to do for the FPS genre what SSB does for the fighting genre. Once Nintendo adds all the extra maps and modes, it might just be that.

The key to killing players using the roller is just to stay away from them and pick them off with a splatter jr or whatever it's called. They're kind of sitting ducks from a small distance. But yeah, up close you have no chance.

Has anybody here actually played splatoon yet?

Just played the demo/beta and that is an extremely fun and unique shooter. It gets a bit of getting used to but it sure left me wanting more.

Some of you critics should play the game before you bash it.

This game will get at least an 8/10.

Alright, after one hour, here are my impressions for the game:

  • Five maps definitely will not be enough. In the one hour that I played, I repeated two maps throughout. Of those, the more basic one (forgot what it's called) was there, like, seven out of ten times. It's a good map and everything, but yeah, things could get tiring soon.
  • The actual core gameplay is so much fun. There's something oddly, almost viscerally satisfying when you see your paint marking your territory, and when you see an enemy squid explode in a burst of your color. Just excellent.
  • Weapon differentiation needs some work. The sniper is great, but both the other guns are just... there. The Jr. has more weight and better power, though I guess.
  • Which brings me to the most powerful weapon- the Splat Roller. It's absolutely overpowered. By the end of the hour, six out of eight players on the maps were using the roller.
  • Whereas I personally did not find myself missing the voice chat, it is absolutely necessary for this game. No guys, we don't need three fucking rollers all running around this one same area.
  • The netcode was, surprisingly, impeccable. No lag, no disconnections, no communication errors. Coming from the Russian Roulette of Smash Bros., it came as a pleasant surprise.
  • The other map I played on, Saltwater Rig I think it is called, was absolutely brilliant. Nintendo's platforming inspired level design prowess was coming into play here.
  • Game looks good and sounds good.
  • Whereas Nintendo promotes Splatoon as a game where the Gamepad is indispensable (for a change), personally I largely found myself ignoring the screen and the zoomed out map layout.
  • Once I switched to dual analog controls, it controlled great, no complaints there. Gyroscopic aiming was absolutely awful, and really should not be the default option.
  • Overall, it's great fun to play, and the core gameplay concept delivers on all the promise it's had since it's debut a year ago- but Nintendo's decisions, such as the lack of voice chat and the lack of variety, especially at launch, are definitely going to hurt the game's longevity. At least the latter is getting patched in.

Overall? I've warmed up to it a bit more than before. The core gameplay remains fun, and that will be this game's saving grace. Some time later, when the game has all the content released (so presumably after August), I will buy it- I see the 'Complete' Splatoon being a game actually worth the money. As it is right now, though? Eh.

I'm willing to hype it 7 now, because the appeal of the actual gameplay cannot be overstated, but that's about it. If there is a Splatoon 2 (Spla2n?), I really hope it's as much of a leap from the barebones first game as Melee was from the original, also rather barebones Smash 64.

Second hour was excellent. I went splattershot jr this time. Its my favorite weapon. It has good range, good power, and it covers a lot of ground. I found myself loving the minigame between matches. I got to level 8 before the hour was up. Believe it or not there is some serious competition potential here. After I mastered movement between squid and humanoid form, I was raising hell all over the map. I ended up killing 3 enemies in a span of 3 seconds.

As far as the map selection goes, in the end it doesn't matter in turf wars. Since the goal is to cover the territory in ink, you don't really notice the surroundings as much as you are looking for stuff that you haven't marked. The game could feature a level from MK8 and all I'd see is stuff I need to ink. The level design is flawless, like almost every Nintendo game, and the platforming bits feel excellent.

As far as the rollers go, all you gotta do is go squid and run away until you get enough space to shoot them down. Heck I think I even jumped over his roller in squid form. But since I ended up in his ink, I still had issues turning around to shoot him. And don't forget about your sub weapons and big weapons. Nobody is using theirs and they can do some serious damage.

You can't judge OP-ness after a 1 hour play session. Different load outs will have different learning curves.

Gameplay and Turf War is good enough for around an 8.

Lack of multiplayer content and features makes it a solid 6.

If SP is abit extensive, it's a 7. Otherwise, a meh 6 out of 10

@bunchanumbers: I was using my subweapons, but how do you get to the big weapons?
