Couldnt care less about this game or any Nintendo title but saw this on Neogaf and thought i'd share:

IGN: http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/05/10/dear-nintendo-splatoon-needs-a-voice-chat-option

Are you kidding me? It's 2015. A voice chat option is standard in most online team-based games, and it doesn't have to be active with the entire map of tea-bagging grade-schoolers, but rather can just be limited to your team at will. We can have our cake and eat it too if Splatoon supports opt-in team voice chat. Nintendo has never been shy about prioritizing its family values, but the DNA of Wii and Wii U's online experiences have mostly suffered from the lack of online features.

I believe Nintendo's lack of online experience and fear of unknown profanity is taking priority over the gameplay. I also believe it's cheap and lazy. Splatoon is a lot of fun and there's a ton of strategy that will go unrealized if you can't communicate.

The lack of voice chat is easily the second biggest drawback of this game.

At most, I can read my teammates movements to coordinate strategies, but that doesnt work for long planning or more complex strategies.

For me it really sucks, since in team games. I tend to find myself coordinating and leading the team. Much to the annoyance of noobs in World of WarCraft, who would rather farm the middle zone and tell me to "stfu and play" as opposed to winning the game.

The gamepad gives you the exact location of your enemies, your friends, and who is fighting and the entire map, and not just a bit of it. This is more information than you could ever get from a kid telling you he screwed your mom last night.

Pre-ordered the game by the end of the second hour.

I'm in a similar position. After all the news I was sure I didn't want it right away, but after playing the game Friday and Saturday I just want more. I keep going back and forth about getting it at launch, or waiting for more features. Thing is, since it's a Nintendo game it isn't likely to go down in price for years, so getting it in August when more features arrive just means waiting for two months while others are having fun, which means missing out.

I enjoyed it and don't give a damn what it scores here or anywhere else. I'm sold because there's really nothing else out there like it.

@Maroxad: hmmm... i do quite like Hack & Slash games like Ninja Gaiden 3, Bayonetta 2 and 1, W101. Saying that the lack of modes will be updated on splatoon from what i saw on the ND. May sound mad but it reminds me of Gears of War and i do love gears. What a predicament.

It should score a 4-5/10 at best. But because of blind nintendo nostalgia, it will not shock me to see 9/10 scores everywhere just because it has a nintendo logo.

IGN is bashing it in the previews which means they will score it high. They are famous for doing the bait and switch with previews to reviews.

I'm hyping AAE. If the reviewer is kind and understands that the future will have the extra features? AAAE. But a GS reviewer being kind to Nintendo is like finding a magical unicorn.

Why should they forgive Nintendo for rushing a game they know should be pushed back to bring in standard features. After all, this is the same creative mind that believes "a delayed game is eventually good, a rushed game is bad forever."

Pretty hilarious that this was being hyped to hell and back, with it being regularly listed as a reason Nintendo won E3 (by way of Skype, apparently) and one of the biggest games of 2015, and now platform fans won't even stick their neck out enough to bet on a 7.

Every time you think Nintendo is finally "getting it", remember this hype fail.

I don't think it is rushed. Sadly thanks to the power of Day 1 patches that famous quote by Miyamoto doesn't apply anymore. A game can be rushed and eventually be good. It sounds crazy to say but its true.

A non mmo game should be reviewed for features that come on day 1 and splatoon is severely lacking in that department. Too many basic features(not just talking voice chat) missing for a mainly online game. Should get 6-7's but wont be surprised if it gets higher

@fueled-system: No it shouldn't. A game should be reviewed based on many things, its features is merely one part of a game. It has never been what made or broke a game. It's not the only thing that makes videogames. You're focusing too much on an arbitrary score. A review should focus on selling the game by its own merits, not on some arbitrary metric that you just made on a whim.

Halo MCC got 9s across the board, and everyone praised it for having "so much features", yet half the game didn't work, including MP. It only began to work 6 months after its release while Nintendo's first take on the genre works flawlessly.

@stuff238: it won't score 4 or 5 out of 10 because it's actually good. Nothing to do with nostalgia. So you might want to come up with a new excuse by May 29.

Lol. Typical fanboy response. Nintendo lacks something simple and basic that the rest of the industry sorted many years ago, the response is to pick the worst example, act like that's the common rather than exaggerated case, and say "It's worthless, we don't need it anyway!!!"

Same thing with voice acting. Point to Zelda CDi, pretend all voice acting is that standard, act happy that Nintendo games are still silent text decades after high quality voice acting made it into games.

Shit. Potty mouths are what's common. If you play a lot of console online games you know that as well as any one. Count the times you have quality friends in a match using viable strategy vs the times you're subjected to off key singing, kids screaming, haters hating, whiners whining, garbled noises.

The game pad shows you exactly where your team mates are and the paint colors on the map in real time. It's just not needed in a game like this. Personally, I'm glad it's not included just for the fact that I don't have to scroll around and mute people constantly.

Lol. Dude, you did exactly what I just said Nintendo fans always do. Picked the worst case scenario and pretended it's the only case.

That list you made only applies to randomers in public lobbies. I don't give a damn about them. I give a damn about chatting to my friends, whether real life or internet.

Woop de fucking do, you have a map, so what? It still doesn't let you co ordinate with anyone else. 4 players on a team might be able to see 2 trouble spots. There's NO way to communicate "Us 2 of us will go left, you 2 go right!" You just have to hope everyone will "sense" where the others are going

That's just pointlessly spiteful. It would be trivial to include a "Hear Voice Chat?" toggle in the options screen. Those who want it can switch it on. It would be a win-win for everyone.

Try to paint me as a Nintendo-only fanboy all you want, but you know that's not the truth by any stretch. If it makes you feel better to pretend that is reality then feel free to continue telling lies.

I could see the need for voice chat in a Rainbow Six game, but it's almost never used properly in games like Starhawk, Battlefield, or even Destiny with private chat. Dudes just ramble on about going on a date, or being broke etc. Acting like everybody uses it for significant gains all the time is nonsense.

@Bigboi500: Maybe that's the point, just being able to banter online about life. Sometimes just playing games isn't enough to blow steam. Talking on private chat can also help when it comes to blowing steam, no matter how trivial it might be.

But that's only one facet of the issue. If they did voice chat how long is it before we hear about how some ped victimized someone because they met over splatoon voice chat? Is it Nintendo's fault? No. They would have issued the proper warnings and wouldn't be liable. But public opinion would be a big black eye for them even though they had nothing to do with it. Many of those games with voice chat are M rated and the online interactions are unrated. I wouldn't say that Nintendo is looking out for everyone, but preventing a public opinion outcry. And that is practical.

@hiphops_savior: I'm not gonna pretend that I don't want to chat with my friends. I'm gonna use Teamspeak to chat with friends whether they're playing or not. But when you're playing this game, you won't need it for gameplay purposes.

Everyone that played the game can tell you that they didn't just take away voice chat and gave you nothing in return. They gave you something much more valuable in its place. Information on the Gamepad that is unaffected by crybabies. Don't pretend that the "we need voice chat for team-coordination, hurr durr" the reason you're not playing Splatoon. You (not referring to you, hiphops) should at least try to hide your jealousy, hatred and come up with a better excuse.

Which is why the mute function exists or things like party chat.

Full voice overs are actually bad though. ESPECIALLY for RPGs, where it was in a large part responsible for the cRPG slump we saw last gen. People really dont care much for voice acting as you might think.

Lack of voice overs is one many of the reasons I stick to primarily Nintendo/Indie/Mid Tier gaming nowadays, as they tend either stick to partial or no voice overs. Besides, I am sick and tired of hearing Nolan North's voice.

There are plenty of reasons to dislike splatoon graphics aren't a relevant argument though. If you have a Wii U you obviously want something more from your games than a 5 hour movie like The Order.

Also that's an android game.

@inb4uall: i wasn't referring to graphics. posted a pic because i have a feeling most forgot about this thing's existence. The similarities between the two are- both are super hyped because, well, shooter on a console that doesn't get any, fresh/new "mechanics" like spraying sticky white stuff on walls then swim in it/being able to change the whole on screen interface (dunno why this was even hyped by sheep but it was so damn praised in the conduit), both were hyped but after release/close to release looked pathetic. This is sooooooooo The Conduit level of failure and i saw this from the day Splatoon was announced, it literally looked mediocre. Games like TW3 are coming out and people hype this thing? Come on...

Did you play it? Because if you did then you'd realize that its a lot of fun. And in the end fun is all that matters in a game.

Having play the conduit 1 on Wii and the demo for this for two hours the other day they will fail for completely different reasons. The conduit was just over hyped crap because sheep wanted an FPS. This actually has some interesting gameplay and innovative ideas that would allow for cool strategic gameplay. Team composition, character movement, choke points, and taking and holding areas are all important and you can tell they will have weight on the matches in the actual game. Unfortunately there is a lack of modes and the game features. Nothing respectable in the way of local multiplayer. To my knowledge there isn't a party system, and if there is down the line in an update you would still have to use something like skype in place of proper party chat. Not to mention the lack of maps/weapons/etc. This is why the game will fail. The game play is there. Nintendo just chose to shoot themselves in the foot several times.

@silversix_: I have every console on the market. I'm not interested in The Witcher 3, played the second and first. They were slightly above mediocre with sub-par action elements tacked on its gameplay. Like many others, I had my doubts about Splatoon, but I ended up pre-ordering the game by the second hour.

Also, please ignore inb4uall, he's just a mindless Nintendo fanboy, as is clear from his ridiculous last comment.

Its insane if you run into someone with some skill. Some of the most satisfying battling I had in years was in a 1 hour test demo. At one point I was literally cheering while mowing down enemies and undoing their hard work with my splattershot jr. It made me sit back and realize once more how much Nintendo can change your perception of a genre when they want to. On top of satisfying combat, they made one of the most intuitive aiming systems outside of KB/M. They really nailed it with Splatoon.

My favorite part was when I killed somebody, but somebody was in the middle of teleporting to his location. Poor bastards landed right in the middle of my splattershot Jr and died. Had to respawn once more. That and getting into a firefight with someone who knew what they are doing. You'll see squid transformations, jumping between puddles, and moving back and forward and using all terrain. I got into a fight in the warehouse, but couldn't get a clean shot and he was tossing grenades. So I inked up the boxes between us, went squid, did a leap of faith on the other side behind him, and killed him. It was beyond satisfying.

I kept thinking to myself the squid/fly through the ink mechanic was not getting half the love it deserved. That is a truly innovative little move for a shooter and everyone overlooks it and the possibilities it brings to the game.
