Can anyone please tell me why Returnal is doing a better job at being metroid than Metroid itself? Think about it. Think hard.

It's possible both games are worthwhile and neither game's sole purpose for existing has absolutely anything to do with making the other game look bad. It's entirely possible to like more than one game. I know to shitposter's the whole concept that more than one game can be good, really twists up those panties.

@hardwenzen: Housemarque would have been an excellent choice to make a metroid game. Gameplay of returnal mixed with samus would have been awesome.

Another killer switch game.

I played a Metroid game for the first time earlier this year when I beat Super Metroid for SNES. I rated it a 9/10, and that's against even modern games and without the skew of nostalgia. Over the weekend, I also played and beat Zero Mission. I actually thought it was more fun than Super Metroid. Currently I am playing the 3DS remake of Metroid 2: Samus Returns and I think it's a step down from both of those. Unfortunately the people who made Samus Returns for 3DS are also the ones making Dread, so I am skeptical.

People can hold opinions no problemo, but you're not voicing an opinion. You're just jumping in a thread to trash a game you're not interested in and condescend to those that are interested.

Borderlands has nothing to do with Metroid, but thanks for your voiced opinion, however irrelevant it may be.

I'm still getting this regardless of the score as it reminds me of my favorite Metroid game, Fusion.

And that's about it. All I wanna do is play a game that looks fun and talk about it. Like Metroid Dread for example.

super metroid is a fantastic game even today. You can fire it up and still have fun playing it, 16bits and all.

oh snap. Well I do agree that this metroid thing was dissapointing. I was hoping for a 10 to be honest, or at least a 9. But an 8 is a dissapointment on many levels, the sheep have been owned and need to be bashed thoroughly. Its time to open up the flood gates, the sheep usually get away from the whooping when a big game flops, probably because they all decide to stay low key when it happens. Anyways, its time to take the beating properly like a man/woman

If I was getting a Switch it would have to be the OLED after seeing DF's review. They said it makes the standard Switch feel like a £99 cheap Android tablet.

If it wasn't for Christmas on the horizon I would buy one today.

Ah! so now that the OLED version is a thing, they call the older version as a $99 piece of crap, even tho this OLED version is what the Switch should have been since 2017. Give it two years, and if the Switch 2 is significantly more powerful (won't happen, but lets say that it does for the sake of argument), they will call the OLED Switch as a worthless $30 toy. How about calling it for what it is NOW instead of waiting the next iteration before you're able to shit on the system? Scared of offending Nintendo fans, and are only saying the true negatives when everyone has their eyes on the newer iteration. That's some pussy shit.

They didn't say a £99 piece of crap. More that the OLED version feel premium. The deep blacks and fast screen response make it feel better than the LCD.

Wonder how long it is before Valve make a OLED Steam Deck, I'd wait for that one myself.

OLED does not feel premium. OLED feels like standard for almost a decade. Its Nintendo that wanted to have so much profit per system sold, that they put some shit tech instead of your standard tech. This was the problem with the ps4/xbone at launch as well, when they used those Jag cores from 1999 thinking it'll last them a full generation. At least Sony/MS has learned, but i'd bet you anything that Nintendo hasn't.

It certainly feels more premium than a washed out LCD image with no blacks, shit contrast and poor response time.

But yeah underneath it's still very much a Switch for better or worse.

Just saying 'if' I was to buy one it would be the OLED and not the lite.

Can’t wait to play this game on the Oled screen. Oled is so amazing and Metroid is perfect for it. Just a little bit longer. Switch has had some amazing hits this year, such amazing diversity. Thank you Nintendo.

Because I wanted to play Zelda and Mario at the time and once I was done with them there was nothing that interested me so sold it. Now I want to play Metroid.

Do you have a pc to emulate it? Not worth spending $350 for a game that looks on par with what you'd get from an indie dev for $10-15. And after you're done with it, there's nothing else on the horizon.

No, I don't own a PC at all anymore, just a laptop provided by work.

I'm not going to buy one. The moment has passed, was tempted after seeing the DF video and reading the EG review of Dread. But it would be selfish of me to blow £350 when I have a daughter that wants everything for Christmas (although not a Switch).

Mine will be delivered tomorrow morning. Maybe 9 hours away? Definitely looking forward to playing this on it.

Well, in the meantime, I've played it for about 20 minutes. The tutorial doesn't mess around - I've already died a couple of times.

Oh, and the gameplay is silky smooth. The melee countering feels particularly good this times, since it maintains your momentum when you're running.

@strategyfn: Comparing Metroid to... Borderlands?

While it is still a big deal today, it was a BIG deal back in '94. What Nintendo was able to accomplish with Super Metroid was nothing short of brilliant. The 2D or 2.5D installments have been well done IMO. Nintendo has advertised Dread wonderfully with its approach to releasing trailers and overviews to having certain movies (on well known apps) brought to you by "Metroid Dread." Nintendo has actually taken the initiative this time around.
