I played a Metroid game for the first time earlier this year when I beat Super Metroid for SNES. I rated it a 9/10, and that's against even modern games and without the skew of nostalgia. Over the weekend, I also played and beat Zero Mission. I actually thought it was more fun than Super Metroid. Currently I am playing the 3DS remake of Metroid 2: Samus Returns and I think it's a step down from both of those. Unfortunately the people who made Samus Returns for 3DS are also the ones making Dread, so I am skeptical.

That's awesome. Goes to show how freaking good Super Metroid is. Wish I could play it for the first time.

I share your sceptisism about Dread. MercurySteam is far from my first choice of studios to make a Metroid game.

Okay, I'm a fair way through Dread now. It feels like they took the best elements of Metroid Fusion, stripped away all of the endless walls of text and limited exploration, and added in significantly smoother movement.

It's a really solid Metroid game. It's also refreshingly difficult - I've died plenty of times learning the boss patterns and stumbling into the EMMIs.

Speaking of the EMMIs, I'm *sure* some people will complain about them. They're smarter than the SA-X and the chase sequences are much less linear/scripted than the ones from Fusion, so you have to think on your feet if you want to avoid almost-certain death (or get *really* good at practicing the tiny counter window). I like them, and they're satisfying to overcome, but they can certainly be frustrating at the start when you have no moves unlocked.

No more skepticism about Dread. I didn't plan on beating the game in one sitting but I couldn't put it down. The boss fights were really fun, great story, the new mechanics really flow well. Dread is every bit as good as any other Metroid game.

It has the same idiocy where no matter how many energy tanks you have, enemies can bash you down to nothing in a couple hits. I totally regret getting Dread, but as a Metroid fan I needed it in my collection. Twitchy combat is not why I play a Metroid game. At least it's short so it'll be over fast.

I doubt you're being legitimate if that is your complaint. Considering increased health goes hand in hand with enemies getting stronger in pretty much every game ever made that has a health bar. Every RPG has enemies doing more and more damage the later in the game you go but you level up and get more HP to compensate.

@eoten: I also played Super Metroid years after release and loved it. It really is as good as everyone says. Check out Metroid Prime if/when you get the chance as they translated the series to 3D nearly perfectly. First one is probably the best, but Prime 2 and 3 are also great.

Glad to hear Dread turned out well too.

It's hard to say because the other Metroid games I played were really good. Of the 3 I played I had ranked them Zero Mission, Super Metroid, and Samus Returns, but I think Prime is at least as good as the top of that list, Zero Mission. The new mechanics they added were done very well, the game was open for exploration, but had a gentle push in the direction you needed to go so there was less time spent being confused, the boss fights were very epic, with great visuals.

I'd say at least as good as Zero Mission if not a bit better. Once I was done with Zero Mission, I was done with it, it was great, time to move on. Now that I beat Dread I actually want to play it again on hard.

One thing I wish Dread had done is use the "Magmoor Caverns" music from Samus Returns, which played whenever you entered a fire room. I loved this soundtrack on Samus Returns.

I prefer how they did it in past Metroid games, it felt more rewarding and less tedious.

Dread wasn't tedious to me. In fact, I found Dread and SR both took out a fair bit of tedium with some much needed QOL features like an improved map system.

They did tweak a lot of things from what they learned with SR. They added a number of new mechanics too which work out a heck of a lot better, and much improved controls no longer having to go into menus to switch equipment either.

Okay, I just finished my first playthrough. It had heaps of great moments, and the later bosses were tough as nails.

I *immediately* launched into a Hard Mode run. Trying to see how fast I can beat it this time - just tore through the first few EMMIs without missing a beat.

This game definitely has solid speedrun potential, especially for a 100% run. Some of the items are ridiculously challenging to get, so people are going to have to develop reliable shinespark techniques to pull them off.

Bethesda congratulated Nintendo with a Metroid tribute with Doom.

Makes sense as despite being pure FPS through and through, the recent Doom games are very Metroid.

I've always thought Metroid could be Nintendo's answer to something like Halo, or even Doom, but unless you count Prime, it's not an FPS. IMO, it doesn't need to be as long as the game play is fun. And honestly, I've never played an FPS game that had more than largely generic point and click boss fights, as most FPS games are. Dashes, slides, double jumps, spins, etc to avoid taking hits while delivering a barrage of missiles of your own is a kind of fast paced, high skilled action you just can't get with FPS.

So I'm okay with Metroid being 2.5D if that's the direction developers want to go. The story more than holds its own. And let's be real about something. Samus Aran came long before Doom Slayer and Master Chief. She was here first.

This game brings out the soyboy in me. I don't know where these rimmed glasses or diamond-patterned sweater vests came from, but that's my attire the moment I picked up Metroid Dread, because this game is 100% vegan and that's a fact.

I trust an 8 score a helluva lot more than a 9 or 10.

8 means it is awesome for Metroid fans; 9 or 10 means they sacrificed too much and made it just good for everyone.

Averages to around 8-9 hours.

Speedrunners have been able to cut it down to 2-3 already. Will be interesting to see where things go from here.

That's ridiculous. The only replay value is speedrunning and higher difficulty, which applies to every game. This shouldn't have been a $60 title. $29.99 tops. But then again, the same applies to Returnal, and Sony were stupid enough to charge $70 for it.

This series tends to be replayable even if you aren't speedrunning it, because they're excellent action games that offer a great power trip.

I played through Metroid Fusion over a dozen times, and probably a similar number for Super Metroid. I don't see why this game will be any different.

I don't know about that. If this is what you consider as a replayable game, then everything Sony makes is replayable. Dread is as replayble as Ratchet... no thanks.

@hardwenzen: Sam stated the game is very replayable cause lots of stuff you miss. Also speed running and just great fun. Sony games are worst at replay, too much qte and boring story crap. It’s best to replay Sony games on YouTube.

When i play mah games, i don't miss anything unless its related to criptic quests that are in games such as the soulsborne series. I would 100% this game on first playthrough, and there would be nothing left for me to do.

Metroid Dread has technical and mechanical depth. I don't know if the depth will be as high as Super's is in the end. But it is far higher than anything the PoS5 has to offer.

Depth leads to replay values. As your personal growth as a player, leads to every playthrough being different enough to justify replay.

the ammount of viable options the player has given to them. The Metroid series has a lot of branching paths, sequence breaks, difficult to execute hidden moves and a bunch of other stuff, that add a lot more meat to the game's traversal mechanics.

Super Metroid has been a popular speedrunning game for almost 3 decades for a reason. And the speedrunning community look pretty satisfied with Dread thus far.

Now tell me: Aside from Gran Turismo, which Sony games have anything resembling a competitive scene?

None, but they bought out EVO (pretty much killing the chance of Smash and Killer Instinct to ever appear in that gig again) to compensate (if not save that brand from it's creep founder), I guess.

That's not depth, its simply learning to speedrun a game like any game with collectibles.

For competitive, the system just came out, so how many titles do you expect it to have? When the system is 5 years old like the Switch, ask me how many competitive titles it'll have.

I could possibly borrow a Switch with the game in a month or two, but of course not buy it. Emulating it on pc would make more sense, but after spending a decent amount of time seeing it being played live, i don't like anything i am seeing. If this was Metroid4, i'd be playing it for sure, but have no interest in Dread whatsoever.

@hardwenzen: You seem to be posting in Metroid threads more than anyone else. Either you're obsessed with the Metroid IP or you're seriously committed to spamming.

You're posting in these threads with only the same graphics and performance "arguments" that are null points when Nintendo announced they don't play graphics since the Wii days.

Not sure what you're trying to accomplish forcing what most everyone knows already.

Quit spamming and let people enjoy their games.

Not sure what you're trying to accomplish forcing what most everyone knows already.

Quit spamming and let people enjoy their games.

Had no idea you were supposed to accomplish something by posting on SW🤷‍♂️

@hardwenzen: Nothing to accomplish; but disruptive posters still get modded and banned when they get too carried away with it.

Oh so you wanted me to post positive comments about the game because being negative is disruptive? That's something.

@hardwenzen: Nope. You are spamming. You live here 24/7 just about. You spam in threads over games and companies you don't even care about or have any intention to play, to voice a fake-opinion based on stills you find on the internet. You do not evolve your arguments as much as you regurgitate the same ones over and over again. It gets pretty annoying, and it discourages serious posters from making serious posts when it's mostly posters like you responding and spamming with nonsense all the time.

@hardwenzen: Keep threads alive that you're actually interested in. It will fare well for you as well as the traffic for SW having fewer disruptive posters.
