If something actually happend (god forbid), guess who assumes the liability? yeah AMC and Sony

And just in case of the ever so fool hearted defense of "but what about the ethics of not censoring art" ...yeah and what about the ethics of you had a chance to avoid people getting killed, and you didn't take it. Let's be clear here AMC and Sony have every fucking reason to "chicken out", this isn't some bullshit petition where the worst thing that can happen is they won't see your film or heaven forbid: bitch on twitter. This is running the risk of people shooting up a theater, blowing up a theater.

@jg4xchamp:

Calm your panties champ. Just disappointed I won't get to see the movie, is all. No, I don't want people to die over it.

They have legit reasons to chicken out, they do.

Also related, I've heard on the BBC (on some random debate show/segment during the afternoon) that Sony was actually fearful of more leaks, not so much the possible attacks. One of the dudes in said debate even went as far as to claim the threat referred to that, though he showed no evidence to support that. Granted this all seemed a bit extreme, even the other people were a bit confused at this.

Well, hopefully someone manages to leak the movie like Fury and whatnot. I feel that selling the movie digitally or on VoD would nullify the chances of anyone getting hurt. I mean their only option then would be to target Sony itself or the people involved in the fillm (likely the main "faces" of it, at that), but considering that the US security forces know who did this, they'd likely be prepared for a worst case scenario. High chance Japanese security forces also are looking into this.

It's still a big load of bullshit that this happened, but yes they do have legit reasons to act this way.

--

As a bit of side note: what about the costs of producing the film? Does Sony have any way to make those back (insurances and whatnot) are are they simple gone, now?

@Desmonic: If any other country in the world did a film like this, with Obama in it, you can bet we'd be raising an army the size of Mordor to do some heavy butt whooping, U.S. style.

I don't know whose bright idea it was to make a comedy out of a current hot issue. I also don't know who the genius is who let Sony servers get hacked at least twice in the past few years. I don't know if anyone got permission to make a commercial work centered on a currently living figure at the top of a current hot issue either.

Beyond the threat of further leaks (Get your shit together, Sony), there are, I think, actual legal issues nobody on the production team thought of until now.

Yep. A recent case concerning Manuel Noriega's portrayal in Call of Duty: Black Ops II was thrown out of court because "the marketability and economic value of the challenged work in this case comes not from Noriega, but from the creativity, skill and reputation of [Activision]".

I have a little difficulty saying the same for The Interview when the plot is pretty much centered on Kim Jong-un.

Never watched, but quickly going through a synopsis, it's still not -quite- the same as The Interview, being more about Team America fucking things up everywhere with Kim Jong-il 'incidentally placed' as the villain. Him actually being a space cockroach may or may not be helping. The Interview, however, is about an interview with Kim Jong-un. It's right in the freaking title this time, making it hard to argue around. Given that and trailers alone, he at the very least has a case. Whole movie, he might actually win.

Sony advertising can get a little weird at times (See: PSP White), but I'm hoping they have the sense not to let North Korea launch Sony-funded/branded nukes in the future. "This jihad was brought to you by Mark-1 Plumbing" didn't work out so well for one guy and his company.

-----

Not surprised the re-screening was cancelled. Rather poor taste to try having that shown during this little debacle.

It also dealt pretty heavily with muslim terrorists, during the early 2000's and very obviously mocked Kim-jong il and North Korea. Back in 2005, North Korea asked the Czech republic government to ban the film because it harmed the image of North Korea (which is lol worthy).

Does North Korea even have the resources to pull off a large scale terrorist attack?

I know it's more an issue of "If," here but this news is everywhere.

from what I understand is it was also mall chains that pressured Sony into dropping the films. Which is understandable I guess, seeing how no one wants a potential blood bath.

An absolutely ridiculous scenario all around.

It also mocked Michael Moore, Alec Baldwin, and America among others. Whether or not that took just enough away from the movie to not give North Korea any legal ground, I don't know. That was that but this is this though. They are definitely pissed this time and Team America isn't sufficient to act as legal precedence to this case.

I was talking about law from the very beginning of the conversation. You were paying attention when I mentioned Noriega, right? Didn't matter that he was all the way in Panama, he still tried to take Activision to court. Thankfully, the judge threw his case out because his character was minor to the game and its success. However, from this case, we can infer two things:

1. Being international means jackshit.
2. Someone who has their likeness used in a commercial product in a non-minor way has some say over their portrayal.

From that, we can surmise a reason why Sony pulled the movie that has nothing to do with terrorists (because we should never give in to terrorists), but rather because they could be sued and they just realized it.

I don't do PR, but I think "The terrorists made us" is much easier to work with than "We can't release this movie because then we'd get sued and line Kim Jong-un's pockets while looking stupid in the process".

Uh none of those reasons ever came up. It's entirely based around a set of threats put up by hackers that resulted in malls/theaters not wanting to show the film and that eventually leading to sony pulling the film altogether. It has nothing to do with fear of getting sued.

And it's not like this film came out of nowhere, it's been known about for a while. North Korea already officially called it an "act of war" I don't think they would step down to "lawsuit" after that if they even had the ability

-I- brought them up because I believe there are legal reasons not to release the movie commercially. Sony not citing it as a reason doesn't mean it isn't one of their reasons. The terrorist angle is much easier to work with, however, as it doesn't make them look bad (At least, not any worse), hence why they're citing that alone.

Overall, I thought it was a good ending for The Legend of Korra, but not for the Avatar series as a whole.

You better! :P

I've come to realize just how little I've played my Wii U or PS4 lately, not because of lack of games but because of the lack of time. I'm hoping that changes soon cause I really want to beat Bayonetta 1 & 2, race more in Mario Kart 8, play more Smash, beat KotOR, then play all of the games I'll be getting over the holidays. Woof.

I just bought Valkyria Chronicles on steam, at $15, I couldn't resist. Am I bad for buying this again? even though I own it on ps3.

Started watching hunter x hunter.... I think it was a mistake. :(

I personally didn't like the anime.

Speaking of anime, I finished watching Bleach and now I'm reading the manga.

I'm visiting family for the holidays so I'll be gone until late next week.

Merry Xmas to everyone in the lounge, Happy Holidays if Xmas isn't your thing, and here's hoping everyone enjoys their winter festive period.

Ciao~

I didn't like it at first. I mean it only gets good after the first 30 episodes. The only thing that pisses me off now is the fact that the series went into a hiatus again. :(
